Jaguar XKR project this week:
I am at a point in the rebuild where I could potentially drop the subframes and really get stuck into this restoration. I have put together a poll on the community tab on my KZfaq channel so you can have your say and let me know.

Hi Simon, I agree that the entire car should be freed from rust. It's a huge job, but it just makes sense. I wish you success and have your summer fun with the Porsche. Udo greets you.😊

Hi Udo, it will be a big job to do properly. But it should be a very worthwhile one once it is all sorted out. All the best, mate, Simon 👍

I envy your opportunity to do what it takes to completely restore your car. If you don’t do it you will only be cheating yourself. You know it will be great fun and you’ll have all of us to cheer you on. Have fun and keep the videos coming. Rick Klein from the Deep South of Mississippi, USA.

I would definitely drop the subframes. The front and rear vertical faces of the chassis are a known rust trap, so much easier to check/ repair if the subframes are off.

Hi David, Thanks for your input, buddy. I agree, I will definitely get to a lot more problem areas with them out of the way 👍

Hi Gerard, I appreciate that buddy. The itch is definitely there to just get it on the road, but while I have the time and enthusiasm to do it, i may as well just get into it only the one time and do it properly 👍

Hi Simon. Really looking forward to watching this restoration project. If it works for you then as the car is already off the road it does seem to make sense to get the whole job done before putting it back on the road 😊

Hello Simon , I'm in total agreement with you , drop the subframes , free the car car from rust it's all job done then and it will give you piece of mind, definitely go for stainless steel exhaust stage 1 and 2 straight through , you won't regret it and the sound is just wow , all the best 👍

I think if you have the opportunity to do this work go for it. I’ll be following you all the way . This could be a step by step how to do this kind of work that maybe I could be and others brave enough to do. Go for it Simon 👍👍

Hi Steven, Thanks as ever for your encouragement, buddy. I have had a good look around, and there is not very much info on KZfaq about the removal process. So it may be a good opportunity as you suggest 👍

I have a 2004 XK8 and am currently facing a similar dilemma. Both floor pans around the seat wells had corroded clean through, so I had these cut out and replaced. A relatively straight forward job as it turned out. However, the subframes now look like those on your car Simon, as do the rest of the suspension components. No rot as such, just horrible looking surface corrosion. This and both rear wheel arches that have started to bubble and rust. My plan is to replace/restore the suspension/sub-frames and coat the entire underside with a preservative. Dealing with the wheel arches is another matter, as I will need to pay a bodyshop to have this done. Is it worth the time and money I'm wondering? Or is it time to cut my losses and trade my XK8 in for a later X150?

Hi buddy, it's really good to hear from you. Unfortunately, we are not alone with this dilemma it would appear. This is my 4th XK8, and they have all looked very similar underneath I am sorry to say. For me personally, it's very worthwhile getting it sorted, as I will then have a car that I know has been sorted out properly. If it's something that you have to continually pay someone else to do the work, then it can become an expensive endeavour. I guess it all comes down to your personal preference on the cars. The X150 cars are awesome, and I'm sure one will come into my barn at some stage sooner or later. There will always be something to do on these X100 models, but that's the fun of it all for me 😀👍

Sounds like a plan. Does it actually run ok now? My only thought is its only worth it if the engine is ok.
@jempitt9974
@jempitt9974 14 күн бұрын
My thoughts as well. You could end up doing a lot of cosmetic work on the car, and then find out that you need a full engine rebuild, and/or a new ECU. I get your thinking Simon, but it seems like a bit of a tangent. It's not bad underneath, but it still needs a few shake down runs to see if you can sort out the engine.

Hi buddy, it does seem to run OK now. I won't know for sure until I get it out on the road, though. But I'm all in now and will address any problems as and when I come across them. What's the worst that can happen, apart from draining my bank account and sucking the life right out of me 😀👍

Hi Jem, I wasn't looking to do this job now, but I think it will work out well if I just get on with it whilst it presents the opportunity. If it needs an engine or other such things, then so be it, I'll just have to crack on with it. It's too late to turn back now buddy 😀👍
