Jaguar XKR project this week:
In tbis episode we remove the right bank cam cover to try and dig a little deeper in the rough running engine issue. Have we found the problem with a broken tappet and shim?

Great stuff Simon, really enjoyed watching through all of your videos of the new XKR project the past few days. I've been looking at getting one myself for a long time, as I fell in love with the car as an 8 year old in 1997 when I first saw one. Still got a diecast model in my office which my dad bought me 25 years ago, so technically that is my first X100 ha. Thanks for all of the videos, yourself and John's channels have helped broaden my knowledge no end over the past few years. Best of luck with the project, I'll be continuing to watch with interest. Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike, welcome along, buddy. They really are a great car, and I say just go for it if you were thinking about ownership. You will notice from our videos that there's always something to tinker with, so they can be as reliable as any other car on the road with the right maintenance and preventative measures. All the best, buddy, and speak again soon. 👍

Well done Simon, I am really pleased you found the issue and the source of the knock. It seems the shim was inside the cam cover. We can always speculate as to what caused the problem, but it may have just be at some time the engine was run low on oil. It does seem to be quite dry of oil in that cam area. There is no issue with farming out to someone who knows what they are doing now you have located the source of the knocking. You have a big heart tackling this at the outset, but as they say "nothing ventured, nothing gained". One huge step forward. Excellent video.

Hi Simon Great video as always Really pleased and intrigued to see the broken Shim/Bucket Never seen that on any car before! I agree with one of your other commenters @life_on_cars that the ECU may have been confused and over-compensated and MAY have caused the other misfiring cylinders. If it were me, then I would just change the secondary (top tensioners) as they are the ones that give 90% of engine damaging issues, they are a lot easier to change, and I would want to establish that I have a good engine and Box before investing too much on the other service items. Like you, Im capable of doing most jobs on my cars. However, I have multiple projects, a real job and a family life, so I have no qualms about subcontracting the odd task to a trusted 3rd party. Looking forward to your next vid whether jag or VW based👍

Hi Simon, I am happy for you that you have identified the issue and the fact that the ECU was having to work overtime to compensate I believe that (fingers crossed) this could cure all the issues. Did the spark plugs come out in the order you had them laid out? As for you quandary regarding chains and tensioners etc, if I was in the exact same situation that you are I would go ahead and replace everything including checking every shim on that engine, obviously the 2 deciding factors should be (A) do you intend to keep her and then (B) the financial side, If it helps I would say that this car has been praying to end up with an owner like yourself. Are you (and others) confirmed for Gaydon? If so count me in, my 2001 XKR could do with a decent run.

Hi buddy, really good to hear from you and I appreciate your words of wisdom. I would be foolish not to complete the 'known' issues in this engine whilst it is in its present state. This is definitely a keeper, so makes Total sense to get it all done right first time round. The spark plugs are in the order I removed them yes, I'm sure with a good clean with a brass wire brush they will come up as new again. If you are keen for Gaydon then it would be great to see you there as well, I'm a Gaydon virgin, so really looking forward to it 😀

As you have it all open why not put an enderscope down each spark plug hole to check the condition of the cylinder . Might also be worth doing a pressure test to see if the cylinders is holding pressure .
@projectsinthebarn
@projectsinthebarn 11 ай бұрын
That is a good idea and would well be worth doing as you say. It's deciding what to do with the broken shim firstly. Possible replace the ime broken shim, pit it back together and see if that was the cause if all my woes, if so, then it would be a great idea to go through the timing chain tensioners etc afterwards once I know the engine is in good order.
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 11 ай бұрын
Those upper tensioners do look like the original 100% plastic ones. Mine have been changed twice since 1997, the first time before I bought the car to the part metal / part plastic version and the second time when I changed them to the fully metal version. You definitely need to change them. It's easy to do by just unbolting the camshaft. You don't need to remove the cam sprocket or alter the cam timing. I've never seen a broken shim before! It must have been a manufacturing defect with the original shim. You're lucky that the cam or bucket appear to have not been damaged. Richard
@projectsinthebarn
@projectsinthebarn 11 ай бұрын
Hi Richard, great to hear from you buddy. I definitely think I have dodged a bullet if no damage has been caused to the cam lobe or cam bucket for the shim. I have seen that you are able to replace the upper tensioner using the 'zip tie' method, something I can look at doing I guess. I'm hoping that I can replace the shim without too much of an issue 👍
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 11 ай бұрын
@@projectsinthebarn The only problem I can foresee is that you might struggle to measure the existing cam clearance in the absence of a shim without a very thick feeler gauge. Unless you already have a spare shim of about the right thickness to use for measurement purposes, perhaps the best thing would be to unbolt the cam and transfer one of the other shims to the empty bucket, then bolt it back down and measure the thickness required and then remove it again Richard
@projectsinthebarn
@projectsinthebarn 11 ай бұрын
@@richardsutton01 I guess I could measure the broken shim that has fallen out and see if that reflects the size that I would potentially require?
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 11 ай бұрын
@@projectsinthebarn You could certainly measure that shim but I'm not sure how that would help as I doubt that you will be able to replace the broken bits in the bucket and then take an accurate clearance measurement. You could just buy a shim of the same size as the chances are that the clearance will still be in spec with that size unless running without a shim has caused extra wear. However, measuring it would obviously enable you to find a shim amongst the other 15 which is the same size and use that one to take the required measurement. You might find that when you measure all the clearances that you require several new ones and one of the now out-of-spec ones is the right one to replace the broken one. When I replaced my upper tensioners at around 50k miles none of the clearances were out of spec although a few had clearly drifted away from the mid-measurement. However, I did not replace any of them. What I did do whilst the cams were out was remove, write down the size, and replace every shim so that, when I next checked the clearances, if any were out I could buy all the shims in advance. In fact, the engine still runs perfectly with no tapping so I suspect that, provided you use good quality oil and change it when required, the clearances will never need adjusting.

Over the moon for you that you've found the fault. Nothing worse than having no clue what's going on. That broken shim would most likely cause the miss firing on not only that cylinder but potentially the others in the bank due to the engine computer trying to compensate by over fueling . You should be able to press the lifter down and pop a new shim in and try it? Fingers crossed you find the rest of the shim. Have a fish about in there with a telescopic magnet ? Good luck fella

Hi buddy, I'm pretty stoked that this may be the route cause of all of my problems, here's hoping anyway! The great thing about finding the broken shim is I can see what thickness it is to get one the same size too 👍 Cheers buddy, Simon

You won't be able to press the bucket down without a special tool, assuming one is available for that engine, but as the camshafts need to come off to change the tensioners Simon won't need a special tool anyway.

@projectsinthebarn 11 ай бұрын
@richardsutton01 Good point, Richard. I haven't even looked to see if you can get the tool to depress the buckets, I guess you still can. The other hot topic is do I do all the tensioners, chains and guides, or just replace the top tensioners that I have access to??🤔

@@projectsinthebarn I checked the tensioners carefully by just looking down the tunnel and pushing the chain with a screwdriver. Everything looked and felt fine so I left them alone and just did the upper tensioners which are the real weak spot, especially the original all-plastic versions. That was 40k miles ago and everything is still fine.
