Yes - downgrade!
I'm putting a set of Jaguar XK coilovers on my XKR, currently fitted with 4.2 XKR-S Shocks and Eibach springs, as the car is too firm for the type of road I drive on. I am therefore probably one of the few people looking to make his suspension softer, but the standard 4.2 XK has an excellent ride and still handles well, so, to me, this is a no-brainer, especially considering that parts will be a lot cheaper. The shocks will also work with the JAG CATS active suspension system.
So, win-win? We'll see...

The sus' on my XK is just about perfect. When I bought mine way back in 2008 it was a £70k+ for the fully loaded one I've got. For starters I was financially at full stretch and secondly, I preferred the drive of the XK over the XKR. I wanted a car that was smooth and easy. If I'd wanted a hard sports car I'd have bought a 911. The difference in hp didn't make a difference to me driving around town.. and when I do take it out for a 'proper' drive it performs well enough not to worry about. I still have the car today and still love it. I've done a few track days but always use a 3rd party car - no way would I risk my Jag - so for me the XK ticks all the boxes why I would want a Jaguar. Good vid.

Thanks and agreed - although the standard XKR isn’t too bad - my suspension was aftermarket and too much for UK roads. Too much is focused on ‘hard is good’ which is objectively wrong in most normal driving conditions.

We call him "mister squish". Air bags would be a sensible upgrade, or a custom fox adjustable gas system which allows the shocks to be placed inboard.

If cost were not a consideration, then that could be sn option, but the XK stuff is a good low-cost alternative.

Wow, someone who thinks the same as me about XK suspension… Having had a 4.2 XK, 4.2 XKR and now a 5.0 XK, the 4.2 XK had the best ride - by far. Jaguar ruined the suspension on the 5.0L too - it’s designed to go round a track fast but is too stiff for long runs. I’d love to fit standard 4.2 suspension to my 5.0 which is used as a GT, not a sports car.

I kind of feel the same then, Gavin! With the entire aftermarket, and Jaguar basically saying 'firm is Good!' I wondered if I was missing something; same with going for smaller diameter wheels. I noticed a big difference in ride and also acceleration - partly less un-sprung weight, but also, I believe, because the car is able to 'hook' more due to better traction.

I really enjoyed that Mike. There is a huge temptation to only mod towards more extreme or more sporting parts. Unless you are improving a car for the sole purpose of reselling it. I think you should mod it to suit how you use it. Folks are constantly asking me why I spend all my time improving my XK8 when I could easily buy an XKR. My answer is that my Xk8 rides suits my driving and I only miss the supercharged power once a year on a track day😁. Looking forward to your next video

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it - despite the usual iffy sound and editing 😉. I agree that the ‘why not buy it instead of modifying’ crowd miss two key points. First, exactly what I want doesn’t exist, so i need to dial it in myself to what I want. Second, it’s satisfying when you make something ‘better’ - even if it is subjective!😀

Nicely done there, I was actually looking at some Ferrari 456 17" wheels for larger sidewalls and less unsprung weight as they have the same PCD as my 2007 XK. Wasn't sure about them fitting over the brakes however...

Nice video I am doing a downgrade to non CATS as mine is stuck in stiff mode and even before that the reaction time to hard when needed was too slow and I'd be on the other side of the road before I knew it quite scary really, I might lower it slightly 25mm 👍

Hello, Mike. I'm in USA and have a 2012 Jaguar XK (base) convertible. The front left strut mount assembly needs replacing and I've had a heck of a time trying to find replacement part. Apparently, the car shops I've taken it to have same issue. Do you have a preferred supplier you might recommend? I did also locate "coil overs" option and appreciate you explaining the difference. Thanks! 😁
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful 17 күн бұрын
Coilover just means the spring is mounted around the strut (shock absorber) hence coil over shock. The XK has a coilover setup anyway - but what your bloke is meaning is to install aftermarket coilovers in place of stock. If replacing, you need to do all four corners as the spring and shock rates won’t match otherwise, and if looking for an OE replacement I tend to use SNG Barratt who I think have a US site too. HTH ETA - if you have CATS suspension be careful with aftermarket stuff - check its compatible

I'd love an update on how this is working out for you. I recently picked up an 07' XKR, and our TERRIBLE California roads have taken a car that could be a great GT car, and made it more of a sports only car. I love power, but with the 20" Senta wheels, it's a bit too harsh. My only concern is handling, I love the way it handles twisty roads, and wouldn't want to lose much of that. I would definitely like a smoother ride over bumps though.
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds similar to my situation and I can say with confidence that, in daily driving, you lose nothing and gain lots with XK coilovers, and as soon as I can get the Venus alloys refurbished they’ll go on too and I’ll accept the ‘looks’ deficit. The Sentas are still ‘ok’ on XK suspension though, but the extra sidewall makes a big difference on bad surfaces. In terms of a more formal update, not likely soon, as the car has had to play second fiddle to the other three and, now the Mustang’s back, I need to save big time (and sell at least one of the others).
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful 2 жыл бұрын
As a further comment - on poor surfaces, better compliance and a softer ride often makes handling better, as the car can maintain a more constant contact with the (poor) road surface.

Just bought a 2000 XKR and am also looking to depimpify it. Fools rarely differ but want a soft and comfortable GT rather than a track car. Also live in Wales where 20" rims with summer only tyres are likely only useful for whichever afternoon summer is scheduled for this year. Hence will remove the lowering springs and either replace with stock XK8 ones or look to softer coilovers. Are there any suitable aftermarket springs which would be worth looking at? Also I wonder what the best tyre is for comfort and ride quality on the ever wet and potholed roads?
@MikeMacful
@MikeMacful 2 жыл бұрын
You can get adjustable Nitron (IIRC) coilovers for the XK8, but they’re very pricey. Other coys, like BC or Tein will have options I’m sure, which will also be adjustable. I use Teins on my GS, which seem decent once dialed in - can’t say ref BC, as I’ve never used them. Stock suspension in good nick is the simpler, cheaper option but may be a bit too soft - if you look at ‘To The Garage’ on here - he’s done a lot more XK8 content and should give you some ideas. As to springs only - all the ones I’m aware of are firmer than stock. Tyres - I use Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5s on the GS and will be replacing the Dunlops on the XKR with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S as soon as is practical. However sidewall is far more important to ride quality and hence why 20” rims are great for looking good, firm handling and buckling on our roads - just ask any wheel refurb coy what they get in the most! Teslas are quite bad for it because they’re so heavy too. Good luck with the ‘8’ - lovely old cars! 😃

@@MikeMacful Stock springs it is then. I assume the stock springs on XK8s are a bit softer than on XKRs? Mine has both the R package and aftermarket lowering springs along with all sorts of Paramount mods. Ride quality isn't what I'd expect of a Jaaag. Boy racer friend of mine recommends Hankook Ventus as an all year comfort tyre for the wet, and keeps larger rims with sportier tyres for the track though have seen a couple of other people mention the Goodyears. Will get some 18" rims and compare prices etc.....
