Jakarta. Indonesia. Considering it's one of the world's largest megacities, you don't hear much about it. Fresh off the plane, having learned some Indonesian and read a bit of the country's history, I decided to go out and get my first impressions of the place and make the BEST TRAVEL VLOG EVER of Jakarta.
Things went much better than I expected.

I love how you went to Jakarta without too much researching beforehand, or else you wouldn’t have ordered beer on a roadside warung because some “world travelers” would’ve told you that it’s impossible to do so in the capital of the world’s largest Muslim-majority country; or you wouldn’t have gone out to experience the nightlife after some know-it-all told you that the city goes to a total standstill throughout the month of Ramadan 😁 I find it really cool that you didn’t recognize Bintang, something that all the “certified Southeast Asian backpackers” seem to take pride in knowing. Look, I love the internet as much as the other guy, but there’s such thing as over-researching and sometimes we forget that it’s good to let a destination surprise you once in a while. Cheers from southern Borneo!

Your "excited face" for your first meal in Indonesia reminded me of Mark Weins. Try to get to Bandung, it's in a high mountain valley, the temperature will be much cooler than Jakarta. From there you can see Kawa Putih, a volcano crater. You will drive through a forest that looks like Jurassic Park, with Tree ferns. Those girls in the park at 17:00 were typical Indonesian girls. Cute, friendly, playful.

Bintang beer comes from the old Heineken Factory in Jakarta. If you look at the star and design of Bintang it is exactly the same as Heineken. When the Dutch were forced to leave, the Indonesian people took over the factory and changed the name and logo to Bintang. As you might have tasted, Bintang is very similar to Heineken @Sabbatical

I like Bintang but not Heineken. It's quality has been going down over the decades to the point that I won't touch it now. I can not check this but it might be that the export version is lousy while the local is good. Don't know. It's interesting that the firm was winning awards in the 19th century and nothing afterwords. The Czech have excellent beer that unfortunately does not travel the world. Shame.

I have been to Jakarta back in the 80s on my way to East Kalimantan. The one thing that I did notice is that everyone always had a smile on their face. Some guy was always asking me if I wanted to sell my boots or belt, and just about every day I had to say no. I did learn a couple of words. Orange was called "sunkist" and syrup was called "log cabin".

I stayed 7 days in Jakarta in 2019 and read already before that there are less toursit traps like in Bangkok and that they treat you like a king there. I also got interviewed 3 times by students on my sightseeing day. When I posted my flight to CGK, a friend wrote "I hope you stay there only on your way to Bali". I guess after my posts and especially after the visits at Henshin and Skybar, the people were impressed that it can easily compete with Bangkok. You should have gone there too, also to the Mosque and the christian church. It reminded me a bit to Barcelona. However, I know you don't go to the posh places.

Impressive how you started learning the language only a month before and you could communicate that effectively. If I may ask, how did you go about learning the language, did flashcards or watching/listening to media in Indonesian come in handy? I'm learning a language (German) myself, but communicating on the spot is often a difficulty.

Hey Tommy! Good video as always. My kid is coming back to NY from school in Shanghai in June. You've come up in conversation, as he considers his life and future. You're a good touchstone between my old fart age and his youth, and you help give me perspective. So....thanks.

Tommy, buy camera microphone cover, it's cheap and the sound quality will definitely be better. I know the wind is strong on the islands, but it can be prevented. Have a nice trip, Indonesia is a very interesting country.

Welcome to Indonesia! I've been travelling this country for literally ten years (recording traditional music) and it never gets old. Btw just a tip - try not to use your left hand when giving/taking things and don't use aku/kamu when speaking to a person you just met/anyone older. You can say "bapak/ibu" or "mas/mbak" instead (Like "Bapak suka yang mana?") or "anda" if you want to be really formal. Calling strangers "kamu" is seen as overfamiliar and in turn can be read as a bit aloof or impolite.

@@SabbaticalTommy Sama sama, apologies for being nitpicky. Your Indonesian is awesome already. Been watching your vids for a long time so happy to see you finally make it to Indonesia, which is really a polyglot's travelling paradise. Hit me up if you ever make it to Bandung or Jogja, my two adopted hometowns.

Don’t worry, Bapak Palmer. You know we wouldn’t be so critical to tourists, they get brownie points simply for being white and if they know how to say “Selamat pagi” and “terima kasih” then we’ll basically worship the ground they walk on 😁

@@kilanspeaks wait how do you know my name? But yeah you're not wrong that Indonesians can have laughably low standards for the conduct of bule2, doesn't mean we shouldn't try our hardest to be polite😅

@@auralarchipelago Big fan of your work! Thank you, your effort to be polite is very much appreciated. Of course with someone like you who’ve lived so many years here, we wouldn’t be as accommodating, pasti dikritik terus tiap ada yang salah 😁

Jakarta, paradise for shopping and gastronomy lovers. Local, Indian, Mexican, Morocco, Asia, Europe, Africa and many more. Just say and explore. All restaurants are available, street food with thousand menu's, from the exotic to the weird. Jakarta has over 200 malls. Jakarta as the city's beauty and the beast. The Jakarta vibe from bad smell to good smell, from cheap to very expensive. From the worst to the luxurious. Jakarta is like a merry go round. Always very attractive and never sleep city. You will be missing Jakarta after leaving the city.
