Indoor season is here... Indoor archery requires a slightly different focus then outdoor archery. Knowing these differences and tricks will benefit you as an archer both indoors an outdoors.
This video pertains more towards recurve olympic style archery but may apply to other types and archery disciplines as well.

On the side note, can you cover the difference between 3D and Field Archery to Target Archery?

Love the challenge of the change between outdoor and indoor, I personally stick with the same bow setup and still use my ACE's indoors, works well for me. I do have an indoor setup and an outdoor setup. You're spot on in that the focus indoors is different, I see friends go indoors for the first time after the outdoor season and struggle, same the other way round too. 70m is a long way after shooting 18m! I try and get outdoors occasionally through winter to shoot 70m and I can shoot 18m at home in the outdoor season when not in comp or at the club.

Thanks Jake, really enjoyed your insights in the first half of the video - mental approaches/attitude to indoor vs outdoor. "See the shoot as a whole" has certainly resonated as I now wrestle more with the mental side of archery than the physical... the joys of archery!! Thanks again Mate, I get a few comments on my good form... that's your work as much as mine.

Thanks Jake, great information! Does the shooting style change also apply to compound shooting?

Get great at indoor distances outdoors. Shoot in wind, rain, snow, sleet etc. When it comes to still ambient conditions, you’ll be golden. Train hard, compete easy. Same in all sports.

Hi Jake. During indoors training, what do you suggest? 3 arrows by end or 6 or even more?

I shot at the 70m nationals this year and had the first of the indoor 18m matches next day. First arrow i thought i forgot my sight pin but it was way way up there (some 6cm higher). I was still all set for 70m :) so yes you have to reprogram yourself for the change.

Are you going to shoot recurve or bare bow this year?

No wonder why indoor specialists tend to struggle outdoors.

Well, obviously - those who do well outdoors wouldn't be described as indoor specialists

See I have to focus on my pin/dot instead of where I wanna hit because other wise I end up holding super low below the x

When I shoot a 30 arrow game, I find that I don't notice what end I am on until about end 7. I think about how things are going really well and then I wonder how many ends I have left, and sure enough I have 3. This is when I start having to keep my mind off of thinking "ok, don't mess this up" or "wow things are going great; I hope I don't shoot a bad arrow now!". I find it easier to play head to head with someone than shooting qualification rounds indoors. Any tips to improve my mental game.

Sounds very familiar, i also start looking around end 7 but not sure what helps. Perhaps by keeping track of all rounds or not keeping track at all. Some people just do not want to know. I usually write the scores so already know. I've also shot nationals (for fun) with our national Olympic archers either in my lane or next to me and they kept track of every arrow and were very aware of what was going on so that probably is the way to go. But that also needs a lot of training and focus (and energy) so work :)

@@FrancSchiphorst I would like to get to a place in my game where I can see my scores, make a decision about how I will be and shoot to better enjoy competition.

@@jamesjgill I just try to shoot a 10 every time :) All previous arrows should not make a difference (except to fine tune sight setting) But what does matter is the overall pattern. I learned the hard way that I need to manage my energy levels. Greenish bananas and almonds do the trick for me supplying a steady stream of energy. That helped a lot with the sudden loss of energy I had during one of my first finals. And I usually drop low due to fatigue. Cranking down my sight a bit during that fase is the short term solution, long term I'm shooting more arrows and physical training help as well. But letting go and focus on process and the arrow currently in the bow work best. And excepting and embracing the fact that you are (somewhat) nervous also helps.

I dunno. My subconscious spends a lot of time thinking about Kate Upton. I don't know if its going to snap to and get the sight pin centered.
