Thanks for the video Dr Jake! Great advice to learn some of the common sterling hallmarks. I find bargains for sterling at thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales and antique stores. Many times the seller is not aware their item is sterling. The prices are lower than eBay, there is no shipping charge and you can negotiate a better price.

In America it is .925 or sterling stamped on it. I've had quit a bit of luck biding and sending offers under scrap my standard offer is 20% below spot I'm learning to refine my own silver from .925 to .999.

US silver flatware is generally marked "STERLING" or "STER". The lettering is usually raised rather than stamped, so harder to fake.

Thank you for the clarification. Are icons ever used, like the lion in the UK?

Dr Jake's Very British Reviews USA is always 925 or sterling, and if it’s fine silver, it’s 999.

I had my first silver find at a car boot sale, went though a stack of spoons and found a teaspoon and what I think is a butter spreader. 25p each! Spoon was 31g and butter spreader was 19g I'll have to try the eBay offers thing. I'm aiming for below spot. Had some success on coins just bidding but fancy getting some sterling flatware to melt down

The thing is, it’s not that simple. If you pinch your finger and thumb on the bowl and pull them off the tip and the tip seems thicker and has a flat edge that means it’s been hardly used and is worth more than scrap. Regional marks like Exeter have more value. The Scottish Like their own stuff and often only emboss patterns on one side, again more value. There are also spoons which were duty dodgers, they are silver but the maker didn’t pay tax. What I’m saying is there are lots of quirks that real spoon collectors look and pay for.

Uhm no. I've looked everywhere and the standard premium out there appears to be 10% or more. On auction sites there are stupid people bidding TWICE the amount of spot. The only deal I have seen is a 10 oz bar at spot for a first time customer.
