CS has 283 ABET accredited programs which means you can still go an engineering route, in a way, if you want. Honestly you can’t go wrong with either. I haven’t made a video on computer science yet. Hope Jake reads this, I've been thinking a lot about getting a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I know I could take Computer Engineering as my major. However, here are some of the reasons why I would be interested in a double major. 1. I want to study both fields at a deeper level and not just take a couple of extra classes like in a minor. For example, understand those concepts that a Computer Scientist would not study and those that an Electrical Engineer would not study in a Computer Science major. 2. Increase my chances of finding a job and being more competitive. I know that Electrical Engineering is flexible and could apply to jobs that a Computer Scientist could not. 3. Avoid being unemployed. In the future, if I were not able to find a job in Electrical Engineering, I would have the option of finding a job in Computer Science and so on. 4. Build a second source of income. I would not only want to depend on a source of income that comes only from my degree, but I would like to have at least two sources of income. 5. Experience the best of both worlds, and if possible in the future, be able to study two masters. I know that when one studies a double major, it takes more time and money. However, I would care more about job security, and I think the best way is to have two bachelor's. In this scenario, what would be the most advisable thing to do, to study Computer Engineering or a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science? Please, can someone advise me? I feel lost

Just do CE. there's no point in the double major. If you feel like you want to dive deeper into a certain topic, do it for your technical electives are do some projects on your own in free time. You will really learn when you get an internship or job, the technical skills required. In school you'll learn more of the theory.

Loved this video. Can you do one to differentiate between Information Systems degrees and CS/CE degrees? I'm not an engineer. I have a business degree with an emphasis is information systems (MIS/BIS back in the day). I feel like employers frequently confuse titles by throwing "engineer" in there for say a systems administrator or analyst position. I hate this. I'm very careful to entertain "engineer" positions because the field and credential deserve some respect, and where it seems employers are all to willing to treat it like a prestige moniker. Administrators don't typically "graduate" to engineer based on seniority.
@JakeVoorhees3 жыл бұрын
yeah good call. Career positions are confusing and imo no one should be called an engineer, nor should a position be deemed that unless they truly require a full engineering degree from an ABET engineering school. I will write this video down on the list and get moving on it, thank you!

Jake, Would love a Video on all about internships and does the type of Engineering Internship affect your career like Can you switch from HVAC to Aerospace engineering
@JakeVoorhees3 жыл бұрын
Hey Natasha, great question. Internships are used for two purposes. 1) To provide you another avenue to truly understand if you enjoy and are passionate about a certain career field. You don't get exposed enough to things like automotive, aerospace, biomedical, or any of the other 12ish sub-fields that we discuss in this video, "What do mechanical engineers do", so check that out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a911p8iJ387YkZ8.html. It is very normal to do various internships in order to know what you like, so its fine to do HVAC then Aerospace then whatever, etc. And, 2) Once you know which direction you want to pursue in your career first, internships can be used to build your momentum towards the career niche that you want. Say you now know you want Aerospace, then you should be building relationships in that field, joining organizations in that field, doing internships there, talking more with those profs, etc.

@@aaliyahc.4700 I know it has been 2 years but just in case someone else finds this: IT is not really related to electronics as much as you think. Being nervous taking any engineering program is completely 100% normal, but it is also so exciting. My advice is, if you still have a love for engineering but you seem to be falling out of computer, try a different field that is similiar. The beauty of engineering is how vast and numerous the fields are. You might end up not coping well with the computer program your school offers, but they might offer another degree close enough to what you wanted and it will work out better. Some degrees that are similar is computer science (programming side) robotics, electronics, electrical, mechatronics. All of these have overlapping classes but are different enough that you might find it better for your tastes. Keep at it

@JakeVoorhees3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment. I know this one is confusing as I get this question often. Computer Engineering is actually a subset of Electronics Engineering which is within Electrical Engineering. Electrical Engineering itself is the more broad major. Many programs offer them together as “Electrical & Computer Engineering” and it's not possible to achieve an isolated CPE degree. Electrical Engineering includes things like power, telecommunications, signals & controls, and electronics, and computer engineering. Computer engineering concentrates more on programming and how the hardware and software are made built to work together. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering concentrates more on circuits, loops, communication, wireless connections, etc. Both of these branches will study the same fundamentals but Electrical Engineering tends to focus on power generation and distribution while Computer engineering will specialize in computer systems. In other words, software-controlled hardware and its interconnections. Computer Engineering does more software related work; such as code development. On the other hand, Electronic Engineering does more hardware related work; such as working on a computer modern board, circuits, wiring, and alike. Here are my videos on these subjects: “What Do Electrical Engineers Do?” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLiRqq56m7fXnWQ.html “What Do Computer Engineers Do?” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ns98YMaFx-CVaGw.html And this one talks about high paying EE roles: “Jobs for Electrical Engineers over $100,000” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jM9km850yrS7o2Q.html Also, a lot of Electrical Engineers wish to work in mechatronics/robotics, so check out this video “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ar-af72UtriwlKc.html Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? I respond to all comments. Cheers and thanks again!

What is the difference between Computer systems engineering and Computer engineering?
@JakeVoorhees3 жыл бұрын
Computer Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering are both subsets of Electrical/Electronics Engineering. Many universities do not even have computer engineering available. I glanced through the top four engineering schools, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and CalTech and none of them have computer engineering. They have electrical engineering and computer science together sometimes, which is where you can build a custom “computer engineering-like” major. Computer engineering integrates electronic engineering with computer sciences. Computer engineers design and develop computer systems and other technological devices. Computer systems engineers implement the network architects' designs, and solve the complex problems involved in the day-to-day operations of networks. They frequently test system operations, identify security risks, and research new products or processes that will improve system function. As you can see, the word “systems” is used within the definition of either speciality, so we’re really starting to split hairs here. However, there is computer hardware engineering, which the BLS reports having 71,000 employed engineers in the USA right now which is actually 5th on the list right now (1. Civil 329k, Electrical 328k, Mechanical 316k, Industrial 295k, and then Computer Hardware 71k). These engineers do not focus on the integration of their designs within greater systems. But in the end, I do not think any of this matters. Any electrical engineer or computer engineer can work in so many of the same jobs or roles. The differences simply come down to preferences, such as what companies and roles you want to intern for, what tech electives you take in your 3rd and 4th years, what events and job fairs you focus on, what engineering organizations/societies/clubs you want to be involved in, etc. Does this help and make sense? Let me know any follow up questions that you have and I will try to help you with those. Thank you!
