It turns out that propellers are a pretty crappy way to move a car around. I don’t think I fully realized this until I drove this 1932 Helicron.

Driving it would be like taxiing a Cessna if you've ever taken flying lessons; that same weird feeling of throttling up and feeling the airplane start to roll while steering takes practice. BTW, never throw things into a propeller. Aside from the obvious dangers involved, there is also the chance that you could develop a hairline crack in the prop which will later cause it to throw a blade, which means projectiles flying around and the engine being so unbalanced it can rattle itself out of the motor mounts.
@christianrosarioRC
@christianrosarioRC 7 жыл бұрын
exactly what are these people thinking this can may not be practical but it's a part of history. you don't just throw hotdogs at history and risk ruining it.

I was first turned on to Jalopnik while living in a remote lighthouse off the west coast of Canada; Visiting religiously throughout my 4 years of painful undergrad and graduate studies until FoxtrotAlpha moved. I've more recently found myself rarely visiting the site. But this, Jason Drives, is exactly why I fell in love with the site in the first place. This is Jalopnik redux, and I eagerly await every new drip of content. If you ever are up here and want to drive a weird LHD Delica l400- give me a shout!

What would really be fun is to build a replica of one of these in one of the states which has laws saying you can register a replica car as that car it resembles. As it resembles a 1932 Helicron you can register it as one. A car only has to meet the regulations that it was required to meet when that model was built, it only has to have the equipment that that year vehicle would have. It'd be fun running this on public roads, the police would have a stroke when they see it. ;-) I've always wanted to do that with a cyclecar, one of the lightweight 3 and 4 wheel cars that where built between 1900 and 1920.

There should be a section of chain-link fence in front of the propeller, to prevent anyone or anything going into it. It also needs a full steering wheel, and the wheels that turn be in the front. Or better yet, just turn the seat around and have the prop in the back, like on bayou airboats.

That isnt true at all. The Schienenzeppelin (Railzeppelin) wasnt a commercial succses, right. But they had a few test run with it, with press and VIPs on board between big citys and it was the fastest train at this time. The prop was only used for running the rails. For shunting and train stations, there was a little electric motor powering the wheels. This experiment paved the way for all future high speed trains we know, because the Railzepp had to get new techniques developed ( high speed brakes, light weight building etc). An old woman which saw it as a little girl, said it was fascinating and frightning too see it running, but thats just little girls memories...
