In todays video we are going to be exploring whether you can actually break into a house with a SimpliSafe system with either a simple $6 433 Mhz remote or with a $20 Radio Transceiver. I was very surprised at the results considering how secure SimpliSafe is supposed to be.

I can confirm that this is true. I have had Simplisafe for a couple years. I can key my radio, walk right in, close the door, wait a few seconds and release the radio key and it like nothing ever happened. System still in home mode. No alarm! I called Simplisafe to explain this, and ask about an update and she hung up on me.

@9:11 huge missed opportunity for a quip: "This SIMPLY doesn't make my feel SAFE..." You are now seeing why poorly engineered security devices only provide the illusion of security, but no real security. This is one of the big draws of Lock Picking Lawyer. Also, you're just overwhelming the TX power of the short burst when the door sensor state changes, burying the sensor's transmission in the noise of the saturated base station receiver (think of it like trying to see a candle next to a spotlight someone is shining in your eyes). You could hold the transmit button on the radio for 5 seconds and just leave the door open, and the base would have no idea... and you shouldn't need to hold it up where the sensor is - just casually hold it transmitting in a sweatshirt pocket as you walk through the door looking like you belong there. They could have fixed this by putting an RSSI detector in the base, and having each sensor send a periodic heart beat in addition to the event transmissions with serialized events so the base could tell than that it missed a TX from the sensor. From there the base could query what it missed, and correlate missed events with high RSSI indicating an more sophisticated attack (and perhaps it could then trip a silent alarm to increase the likelihood of a capture) - but this requires a 2-way RF link, and that's harder to get right in low power (can be done, look at LoRa with 10-year lithium batteries reporting rural propane tank levels). I think you could also defeat this door sensor with a neodymium magnet strong enough to pull in the reed switch in the door sensor, but that works on wired systems too. Essentially, by making the sensor wireless, thy have increased the attack surface of that sensor. Still can't beat a hardwired system with redundant sensor types. Single sensor type can be defeated with a single circumvention procedure - multiple types must be defeated with multiple procedures simultaneously, much harder to get right. I used to install commercial access control systems, and I've never understood SimpliSafe - it's a race to the bottom with pricing, that suckers the market's consumers into thinking they have a system on par with a well designed product. Better than nothing I guess, but so are better locks, doors, and shatter-proof windows...

@Real_Tim_S

@@timothydillon6421 The point of having a monitored system though is that someone else with practical experience is always available to monitor it. Having to check yourself means you'd potentially miss a message at home, or be unable to check it while out. And that's assuming the user has any idea what interference could mean. It sounds more like a "we haven't figured out how to make a useable alarm trigger out of this that won't result in a ton of false alarms, so let's dump the responsibility on the end user, who we don't train how to recognize being slowly desensitized to these notices giving us deniability when a break-in occurs" - rather than a silent alarm.

Have smart locks and door stoppers behind each door. Also, lock your doors.😂 3. Have two sensors on the door.(pick another spot) 4.HAVE MOTION SENSORS in the house. :). 5. Everything wireless is prone to jamming, including cameras and other sensors.. If someone knows what brand you use they can look up the specific frequency on the FCC website or other online resources. And most consumer products have to be within certain radio bands according to FCC guidelines, so even if they don't research which brand you have they can broadly jam many frequencies with the right equipment. The only way around this is to have wired systems, but if you're dealing with someone that sophisticated they could probably find a way around those too with other methods. But as long as the base station is receiving much more power from the attacker than from the sensor, the sensor will be rendered ineffective.

The big problem with Simplisafe is the limited range between sensors and base station. I have a basement with installed sensors only 20 feet from base station and only seperated by floor my Simplisafe system will not connect to my basement sensors which is unfortunately the most vulnerable part of my home. The other frustration is the cameras do not like modern 5ghz/ 2.4ghz wireless routers mine can't be set up. I even separated the frequencies and gave the 2.4ghz band a separate passcode and even that didn't work. I have made multiple calls to Simplisafe with no help, I know more about wireless networks than the Simplisafe help people. The system will be going back this week -not designed for a larger home.

@@ktms1188 umm... evrything can be defeated. There are much more powerful radio devices designed to overwhelm a number of known frequencies. These are just items the average Joe can purchase. If youre a pro burglar, you are likely using devices that can broadcast several bands in the same time usingnmuch more power than 5 watts. Even your motion sensors wouldnt survive. The best bet is to have video footage of entry ways so you can at least catch the door opening and see a masked figure walking in. These alarm systems are really meant for amateur burglars who just ran out of cash and need a quick score. Pros are more likely to focus on high profile places so if you have a morgage and car payment on your minivan, youre unlikely to be targeted by a pro burglar with thousands of dollars worth of jamming equippment.

I will guarantee most self installers will not place a motion sensor correctly.
@robertcrawford4202
@robertcrawford4202 9 ай бұрын
First of all, you do not hold the radio near the sensor as there is no receiver in the sensor. If you want to interfere with the system, you hold the radio near the base station. That being said, setting sensors to go off right away when the system is armed will still not stop a strong handheld radio signal (5 watts) from shutting down the SimpliSafe system. I actually set my SimpliSafe system to away, then walked all around my property with the wife opening doors and windows and the SimpliSafe system would not sound an alarm. So it may not take a $5 gadget, but a Baofeng handheld set to 433.92 and transmitting continuously will keep the SimpliSafe system from sounding an alarm. This is a big vulnerability. Second thing that most SimpliSafe users do not know is that you better hide your base station very well. The reason is that SimpliSafe does not have "Smash and Grab" protection. In other words, a burglar coming into the house, if they find the base station right away and smash it, the monitoring center will not receive an alarm. This is because SimpliSafe does not send a "pending alarm" signal to the monitoring center the second a sensor is tripped. These are two huge vulnerabilities that made me decide to move from SimpliSafe over to Ring. Ring uses Z-Wave which uses a much higher frequency and devices that can use those frequencies are not widely available. Also Z-Wave has multiple frequencies and channels making it harder to interfere with the system.

It did jam the system, but the jamming triggered the alarm, and without the correct pin the alarm goes off. Local homeless have been using stolen Baofeng and mobile HAM radios to set off armed alarm systems and cause users to trash their system. The in car mobile UHF or dual band radio can trigger the alarms to go off from blocks or even a miles away, and can indicate who has alarms from varrious companies by whose alarms were triggered. Also the same amateur radios can cause unlocked garage doors to open leading to uninsurable Catalitic Converter, car computer and sports equipment thefts! Simplysafe should use harder to access microwave radio bands for its communications!

The base station waits for the sensor to send a "check in" signal within a pre determined time frame and if it doesn't get on it registers as a failure and send a trouble signal. If the alarm is armed it will trigger an alarm thinking the sensor was disabled.

I’m very happy with my SimpliSafe system, when the sensors are interrupted I get a text and a phone call. Tested and proven. Plus my cameras work great and have battery back up in a power outage. Best most affordable system on the market in my opinion.

So what happens when you’re out of town and you get one of those notifications? How do you know if it’s just an innocent, random occurrence or an actual emergency? Seems like a MAJOR drawback to me. Affordable is nice, but when it comes to protecting your home (one of the most expensive investments you’ll ever make) and your LIFE, why go the cheap route?

@@willydilly9020 What if your power is out? Or your WiFi is down? Or what if your camera fails because you went the cheap route on that, too? I work in the residential and business security industry and it’s simply dumbfounding to me how many people out there think cameras can do anything to protect a home or business. Surveillance does not equal security. Cameras only allow you to watch things happen. So what good is a camera if you’re just using it to watch your home burn down or get burglarized?

When I successfully jammed the receiver on my SimpliSafe system when doing experiments, I did get a text message that the system was being interfered with but I never got a phone call. The SimpliSafe system WAS affordable, but with monitoring fees being raised to almost $30 a month it is no longer the most affordable. Frankly, I just moved from SimpliSafe to Ring for three major reasons. First, the ease with which SimpliSafe can be jammed with a $40 Chinese handheld radio. Second, SimpliSafe does not have "Smash and Grab" protection; you have to hide the base station which is not always easy. Third, Ring monitoring is less expensive. It cost $20 a month and if you pay for a year in advance at $200 for the year, it works out to only $16.66 a month. Ring uses Z-Wave for the sensors which is much harder to jam because of the nature of Z-WAVE technology. Ring also has "Smash and Grab" protection. When Amazon puts the Ring system on sale, it can be very affordable compared to SimpliSafe. Also they offer refurbished systems and accessories that really make it affordable and the refurb systems and accessories looks and works just like new. We are much happier with the Ring system and saving money.

Your too close to the base station. Use a door sensor that's far away from the base station. When you put the radio next to the base station it trips the interference do loop. The door sensor is basicly a circuit and so it cant detect the interference but the base station with its brains can. They need to install digital key codes in the door circuits to prevent the jamming but this will increase unit cost and thus they wont do it. So lock picking lawyers videos might force them to upgrade. Those cheap burghers.

You get what you pay for. Have a professional install decent equipment... or pile a bunch of empty cans in front of your doors, if you really want cheap. Since the base station beeps, to let you know exactly where it is... just follow the beep during "entry delay" and smash the base station. Now it won't sound, or communicate. Honeywell wireless is outside the ham radio range, and uses "advanced protection logic" to prevent something like that from doing burglars any good... the signal is sent as soon as the door is opened. It amazes me how people will install inferior equipment, on a system they will have for years, just to save a few hundred dollars. Like I said, you get what you pay for.

You didn't give the hack a far chance. 1st you have the base station right by the door. I don't think putting the hack transmitter by the door sensor is how you should try to hack the alarm. And you only tried one transmitter. You did not prove the hack does not work, you only showed one device did not work the way you set up the test. The hack is "Not" Busted.

@@LaceyFamilyFarm Use more than one transmitter to test this out. Place the base station in a central part of the house. Being it was right on top of that door sensor, I'm sure the sensor and base station had a strong connection giving the transmitter no chance to interfere. Perhaps id the transmitters used by people like the Lock Pick Lawyer and try to debunk by using the same transmitter. I'm not trying to say you did bad, just that I don't think you went far enough to prove conclusively the hack worked or didn't work.
