Jamafer grew up and lives in Orduj, Quba. She is part of the Tat people. It is a remote village where she worked very hard. She is a mother of 9 children and raised her kids without a father, and sewed/knitted all their clothes. She taught all of her girls and daughters-in-law to knit. Her and her son and his family are semi-nomadic sheep farmers. They live in their mountainous village of Orduj in the spring/summer for 6 months and then go to lower winter camp with all their animals for the other 6 months of the year and live in rented small houses.
These videos were produced by Azerbaijani Socks. In September, 2021, Teresa Hamilin, founder of Azerbaijani Socks walked through the mountainous regions of Azerbaijan with the purpose of researching the history, traditions and designs of knitted socks. These videos were produced with the hope of preserving this valuable craft, to celebrate the talented women of Azerbaijan, and to encourage them to pass this tradition to the next generation.
