On August 6th, 1962, Jamaica was granted its independence from England.
Jamaica became an English colony in 1655 when the English captured the island from Spain. The island of Jamaica became a British colony from 1707 and a crown colony in 1866.
The Jamaican Diaspora is global, anywhere in the world you can hear the drum and bass beat of reggae music, as well as food, arts, sports and the fun-loving spirit of Jamaicans, which has brought joy and happiness to millions of people across the world.
On Sunday the 11th of August 2019, at the Fartown pavilion in Huddersfield, the Jamaica National Council celebrated the 57th year of Jamaican Independence.
A patriotic crowd, live stage show, food, made sure that lots of friends from the past and present had a wonderful time.
Although a great time was had by all who attended, there were several people questioning the relevance of an Independence Day celebrating Jamaica alone.
There seems to be a growing opinion in Huddersfield for a ‘Caribbean Day', which celebrates the all the Caribbean islands who've gained independence from England and Britain respectively.
