Never heard about this film, but I'll definitely check it out. Re fake Jamaican accents, on one of my visits back home to Jamaica years ago I had the good fortune to meet a famous radio personality. We got to talking and he told me about an experience he had while living in the US. He found an ad in the newspaper one day looking for Jamaican speakers for a radio commercial. Well, he thought to himself, he's an experienced radio personality from Jamaica so he should be the perfect candidate for the job. He applied and they invited him in for an audition. They gave him a text to read with a Jamaican accent and so he read it in his best radio voice. He then noticed that they didn't seem happy with the results. "Can you do that again with a JAMAICAN accent?" He didn't know exactly what they meant, but he tried again, this time more clearly enunciation the words. But the producers still didn't look happy with the outcome. They wanted him to try and sound more "Jamaican". Now he was completely confused. He's a Jamaican, with years of experience as a radio host, and he's speaking the text with a Jamaican accent...how much more "Jamaican" does it get than that? So one of the producers demonstrated what they were looking for, and it sounded NOTHING like a real Jamaican accent. They wanted him to speak that phony, fake Jamaican accent with lots of "mon" at the end of every sentence, exactly like those birds from the movie excerpt above. He tried telling them that no one in Jamaica talks like that, but it was no use - THAT's what they wanted to hear. So he just shook his head, swallowed his pride and spoke the text in the accent they were looking for. He didn't think he did a good job but there were ecstatic, and the more idiotic he made it, the more rapturous was their reaction. He said he felt very ashamed as a Jamaican reinforcing that stupid American stereotype of Jamaicans, but at the time he really needed the income. This is why we'll NEVER hear a proper Jamaican accent in a Hollywood movie, despite the hundreds of thousands of Jamaicans living in the US who they could easily hire to provide an authentic example.

This was a fun video, had a smile all the way through. IMO, the accent is hard to get just right, especially the intonation. Probably a specific example is rising pitch at the "Jamaica" at around 4:03. I feel like a Jamaican would be lowering on the last syllable of "Jamaica". But he does a decent job portraying a general "Caribbean" vibe (esp. in a work of fiction/fantasy). And it's nice that they based their visual work on actual Jamaican scenery. It definitely feels quite "authentic" despite being animated!

"DEL-roy, de PHEH-rat! And what they should do next time they playing a Superbowl is play it in Jah-MAY-cah! Go see Migra-SHAN!" 1) Never knew we even had phehrats on Jamaica. I've only ever seen parrots 🤷 2) Randomly shouted syllables =/= a Jamaican accent 3) The year is 2024 (2023 when this came out) and Hollywood still believes that "If they black, they can do a Jamaican accent!" Patwah is essentially the Caribbean Scottish accent, in that everyone THINKS they can speak it convincingly, while native speakers just smile politely and die a little on the inside :')

When Delroy belted out "JAMAICA!" during his meltdown, that was probably the only thing he's said in the whole movie that sounded authentic. Other than that, everything else is 'Hollywood-ified'. Heck, Delroy's personality doesn't even strike me as authentic. I noticed another potential Easter egg; when Delroy was giving directions to find Jamaica, he mentioned all these miles they should travel to get there (Three Miles, One Mile, Ten Miles, Two Miles). These are all names of places that actually exist in Jamaica, so I hope I'm onto something when I say I picked up on them. Regardless, it is nice to see another film have a bit of focus on Jamaica. It really makes me think how the protagonists could have gone literally anywhere else for their migration, but here we are.
