Gent's Talk Podcast

Күн бұрын

In this week's episode of Gent's Talk, presented by Bulova, the gents sit down with music icon James Blunt to talk about his upbringing, going from working reconnaissance in the army to being a globally recognized face, the wild times of living with Carrie Fisher, a.k.a Princess Leia of Star Wars, how music is his outlet for dealing with his emotions and vulnerability, fatherhood and the negative blowback he received when he first made it big.
#gentstalk
About Gent's Talk:
The Gent's Talk series, powered by Gent's Post and presented by BULOVA Canada is an episodic podcast/video style conversation with the leading gents and rising stars of industry. Guests on the show thus far include Russell Peters, Jonathan Osorio, Director X, JP Saxe, Wes Hall, Karl Wolf, Shan Boodram, Dom Gabriel, Nick Bateman, Justin Wu and many more. The conversations range from career, mental health, family, relationships, business, and everything in between. Even more excitingly, Gent's Talk is the first ever podcast in video format to be featured on all Air Canada domestic/international flights. Our intention is to have a raw and unfiltered conversation with our guests about their lives, how they achieved their successes, lessons learned along the way, and the challenges of climbing that mountain.

I feel that hes too clever for these interviews, not just these 2, everyone. Hes educated and self taught to a very high degree, he doesn't slur or shorten words in songs, hes been I the army, he faces his crap and doesn't run away. Hes not a mess in front of the world... I am sick of the rich and famous telling thier sob stories, hes never done that. ❤

I did sports, theater, traveled, had interesting classes and research opportunities. This was in the 90’s pre-internet in our dorms (we had a computer lab) and no mobile phone (we had one pay phone on a hall w/30 girls), so we just snuck around talking to each other all night. The boarding school bit is fascinating to me. He said it left him emotionally stunted, but he signed his kids for it. He praised the self assurance it gives pupils and the networking potential, which resonates with the most damning criticism moved to men like David Cameron and especially Boris Johnson, among others. Men who are simply convinced to be born to lead without actual merit or expertise. Always failing upwards, to the detriment of the people and the nation. Whistling cheerfully after leaving a disaster in their wake, just to come back a few years later to another prestigious post. I once saw a programme with a class swaps between a poor state school and a prominent public one. One of the poor pupils got the opportunity to continue as a boarder. He was so starry eyed and happy. They did a follow up a few years later and he was doing well there. Except, he had a permanent smirk of superiority on his face and developed a very condescending tone and off-putting demeanor. Those places really mold people into... Something nasty.

There are always contradictions because after all his father was a Colonel in the military and James went to boarding school at aged 7 and then went into the military as he had a military sponsorship through university. He was deployed to Kosovo as a captain, reconnaissance and led 30,000 NATO troops himself. At one point he was ordered by the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in Europe at the time General Wesley Clark to take the airport in Pristina which was held by the Russians at that time. He refused and was later backed up by General Sir Mike Jackson, who stated: “I'm not going to have my soldiers be responsible for starting the Third World War.” Instead they surrounded the airport and an agreement was reached after talks between the Russians and NATO instead of attacking them and starting WW3 with the consequent loss of life. If he did not have the self assurance when given the order to attack the Russians, to disobey rather than simply following it the consequences would have been dire. It is the appreciation that one needs both self assurance and to be judged on one's merits also.Johnson based on his actions is a psychopath as is evident from his music James Blunt is not though he may have been brought up, through boarding school to be less demonstrative and resort to acting like the court jester when he wants to deflect. Equally the lack of confidence in oneself may lead to compliance to the detriment of all. The song "No Bravery" , "Carry Me Home", is very illuminating and like Boris Johnson, James Blunt also went through the public school system but they are the antithesis of each other. One has a sense of responsibility and duty when it came to people killed and one could not care less but both came from the same system.

I think boarding schools are brutally taking away your family's nest and love from the parents that can't be replaced by anyone. Of course you survive it and somehow adapt, but I find it extremely unnecessary cause that is a parents job to teach you independence and self reliance

Every family’s personal situation is different. Sending your child to boarding school is still a very traditional thing to do in England. Especially for families with a military background like James’ where they end up having to travel everywhere. It’s character building from a young age but also borne out of necessity.
