I think Charles Gray was the best Blofeld... he is the one BIG redeeming feature in "Diamonds are Forever". I feel a bit sorry for him in this scene. There is a legend that as a very young actor, CG met Aleister Crowley on a train and modelled much of his subsequent act on him.

@jameskennedy437711 жыл бұрын
Yes. Bond kills him, finally getting revenge for Tracy. YOLT was the first time the producers basically disregarded the novel's story, which was a necessity after switching the order of the books. It set, imo, a bad precedent.

Are we sure they did? I don't recall seeing him after the volcano blows up, so it could be that he was supposed to have deliberately blown himself up with it and they just decided to bring him back later.

@@Cartoonicus DAF is very different in the novel and there's no Blofeld. Blofeld kills Tracey in OHMSS, leaving Bond a wreck. He gets sent on a supposedly easy mission to Japan in the next novel YOLT to see whether there's any hope of him being any use again.
@Cartoonicus Жыл бұрын
@@zacmumblethunder7466 Yes, DAF is actually the one book I've ever read (listened to on tape) so I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. What I'm referring to, is since YOLT was supposed to be Connery's last movie, is it possible Blowfeld was supposed to finally meet his end after 5 movies of being the overarching Nemesis, but since we never saw a body, they decided, instead, to bring him back in OHMSS?
@zacmumblethunder7466 Жыл бұрын
@@Cartoonicus Sorry, I misunderstood. I've read a history of the films and it seems they didn't put that much thought into story arcs or continuity. Back then everything, not just Bond, was done as a series of one off stories. With no home entertainment, very few re-releases at cinemas and only random TV showings to bring in further income, there wasn't much incentive to build the sort of franchises we see now. Also it was far more difficult for fans to study the films, especially when they bore only passing resemblance to the books. I suspect Blofeld was going to be a recurring villain like Sherlock Holmes's Moriarty, until, well, until DAF.

Pleasance was the perfect Blofeld, IMHO. He pretty much got the character from the books down pat: a ruthless, emotionless sociopath. Savalas was OK, but he injected too much smug and smarm. Well, that's definitely YOLT. Although, to be fair, they would have had to make significant changes to the novel even if OHMSS had come first. It's a very good book but it's very dark and brooding. Bond spends much of the book understandably depressed and isn't paying much attention until he realizes that Dr. Shatterhand (his target) is actually Blofeld in disguise. The book also ends on a down note, with Bond having total amnesia, headed for Russia, and unaware that Kissy has had his child.
