This is heavily evident in "Licence to Kill". Aside from the wedding suit and the gray traveling suit he wears, Bond spends most of his time in a blue jacket, white shirt khakis and deck shoes. Dalton said that in the opening, he's just visiting. He wouldn't have a full wardrobe, just a few clothes packed for a day or two in Key West. Having read all the books, I can say Dalton really gave us Ian Fleming's James Bond. He's my favorite in the role (Sorry Sean, you're number 2) He's Excellent.

The summer of 1987 was a fantastic one for the cinema - Timothy Dalton took over the 007 role with grace and panache and 'The Living Daylights' was and still is one of my favourite all time Bond films. 'Licence To Kill' was again, in my humble opinion, a superb film and 20 years ahead of its time. Even though the humour had been largely removed they were still Bond films. With Craig's two movies they are action films but not Bond films. The sparkle that makes 007 unique has gone - bring it back!

I loved the three previous Bonds, but I'd have to say that Timothy Dalton was my favourite. I wish there hadn't been a legal dispute that kept him away from the series after 1989. He could easily have made two more movies. A fine actor.

He was actually willing to return for one or two after the legal problems. Sadly, the producers wanted to sign him for five films and Dalton didn't want to spend that big a portion of his career doing one role. I want to visit alternate universe where I can watch Dalton's third film!

Kara: We're free! James: Kara, we're inside a Russian airbase in the middle of Afghanistan. (How can people( say he was too serious? I thought that was hilarious, just like his salt corrosion comment and his eye roll at her when he was trying to tell her to drive the car into the plane.) I loved Dalton as Bond. Connery and Dalton. And no, Connery is not the go-to because is the first actor to play Bond. Fleming didn't the idea of Conner's casting until he visited the set of Dr No. He was so pleased that he gave the character a Scottish heritage. Connery was cast Bond and became Bond but when Fleming added to his characterisation of Bond, Bond also became Connery. Dalton is Fleming's Bond drawing and I think he would have liked Dalton and would have really appreciated Dalton's understanding of Bond.

I always love that line. I liked Dalton's humour. It was delivered in a matter-of-fact manner that matched what a British military person might say.

Yes I completely agree with you. Pearse Brosnan will always be Remington Steel. When I think of James Bond I think of Timothy Dalton. He should have been Bond for 10 years. Timothy Dalton you were robbed. Kind regards Kate. 💕💕

In that opening Haphazard, I think you just demonstrated that Dalton could do humour. To me that line about being stuck in the middle of an Afghan airbase is pretty funny. They just needed to tailor the lines to be more cynical rather than force him to do stupid puns that have no place in the more jaded interpretation of the character. Again this is evidenced by Daniel Craig's darker Bond who can still do some comedy because the writing is much stronger.

Good stuff, very nice commentary you clearly know your bond. About the clothing, its not just you! :) Dalton is incredibly dapper compared to the others epecially Moore. When you first mentioned that, i immediatley thought of what Moore was wearing in a view to a kill, in the final scene. Oh that leather jacket! they tried to make him look young but he ended up looking like a geriatric renegade. I think Daltons look was one of his greatest merits + no one does the zoom in stare like him!

My top Bond films: 1.The Living Daylights/On Her Majesty's Service (can't decide, I love them both) 3. For Your Eyes Only 4. License to Kill 5. Goldeneye I love three of the Connery Bonds (FRWL, GF, YOLT) but they move very slow for me. Goldfinger has some iconic moments but sometimes it feels like I've been watching it forever. Just my personal opinion though.

Dalton's humor was good, just it was deferent. Moore was slap stick, Dalton was dry-ironic, English humor. But humor is just a very small fraction of what makes Bond, and Dalton held his own.

I'm an American and I enjoyed Dalton as Bond. He and Craig are the closest to Fleming's idea of the way Bond should be portrayed onscreen. He did not like Connery's portrayal of Bond. Some Americans just have a knee-jerk reaction of giving Connery as the answer to the question...who was the best Bond? Don't stereotype all of us.

Dan Reese To be fair, his Bond reviews started out in 2008 before the release of Quantum of Solace, and were meant to be quick one-minute reviews of the films to be completed by Quantum's release. He missed the mark, and the reviews have been steadily growing ever-since, starting with the Battle of the Bonds, Octopussy and Never Say Never Again being the first movies that got full videos. The Brosnan movies, which he doesn't really like are longer than Dalton's and the Craig's are longer than the Brosnan.

Holy cow! I didn't know the original Pushkin went all the way back to From Russia With Love! That was twenty five years ago! O_O Also, agreed on the fight scene between Necros? and Timothy Dalton. That was a great fight scene. James Bond fights the most powerful villain in this movie, he's dangling behind a plane several thousand feet up, and all while a bomb is set to go off in just minutes. Along with the opening teaser of Moonraker, this is one of the two best aerial battles for Bond ever!

I think the thing that ultimately worked against Dalton (and I'm a fan of his) is that the Bond series had long since stopped being remotely realistic and in trying to do a faithful version of Ian Flemings original character, Dalton ended up a bit out of pace with the overall style of the series. Brosnan combined the movie star/humour with the dramatic aspects better, because I think he realised that Bond was larger than life by that point and that was something that couldn't be avoided.

If I have to say anything, it's that the opinion you hold on Dalton's one-liners does not concur with my own. I find them to be funny in the fact that they are so dryly humorous, and that his tosses them in with such sardonic nonchalance, as not to tear the dark persona he wanted to give the role. But besides that, thank you for a wonderful video.

As a Bond Fan I have to say that the humor in the Moore films didnt bother me at all and I actually loved it! Its what made me love Roger Moore the best as bond. On another note I like both humor and Seriousness, so when they made daltons movies more serious I welcomed it completely because I liked both.

Dalton is my favorite Bond after Connery. And the next fav is Lazenby. Moore had his charm yes. Brosnan didnt have the Bond persona although he had the look. Craig started strong but hes not suave enough I'd say. Dalton was the no nonsense Bond. All business. Take no prisoners. I loved his version of the character.

Haphazardstuff: This comment is for your video The Bronsan Age The World is not enough. Wow. I couldn't be more disappointed in you review/understanding of the film. I have watched all of your videos leading up to it and have enjoyed them all. I thought they were well thought out and you grasped much of the true context and major themes, as well as a sense of the franchise and its history. For many of them I disagree with a lot of your opinions, dissection and ratings but enjoyed your perspective and felt like you articulated how you got to your conclusions in such a way that although I disagree, I respect and understand your point of view. I really feel like you need to watch this one again. I am way too tired to write an essay to show you a side of the film I believe you missed, but If you check your comments section and engage me, then I will type out the 3 major themes and scenes you missed. i.e 1.Elecktra Casino scene 2. Dalton, if the stories are to be believed, had a say in Bond's wardrobe. He insisted on stuff that the Fleming Bond would wear. While Connery and others looked great in Saville Row suits, the clothing would be well out of the price range of Fleming's Bond. It's referenced more than once that he has a flat, small salary, and anything he takes in is the property of her majesty's government. Thus Bond's suits would be more off the rack than tailored, and his casual clothes would be to his salary.

I can't remember Siskel liking any Bond film. I know he loved Connery and then I think he dismissed all of them without him. I think both him and Ebert agreed to liking Never Say Never. At one point someone posted a Bond show S&E had done in the early 80's on YT. It was pretty interesting to watch, I think it got taken down though.

This whole film seems to have been guided by a "back to basics" idea, and I can understand why they wanted to get away from the grandiose which had gone before. Timothy Dalton's interpretation blended perfectly with this, and he adds a humanity which I think he did more convincingly than other actors who have played the role. The problem with this is that the grandiose was what distinguished the Bond films from other spy movies. Bond was larger than life from the beginning, as were the villains and their schemes. Although we do get a gadget-laden car and some spectacular stunts, this feels like a regular spy thriller more than a Bond film. In the end it depends on what you like, and I can understand why some prefer seeing the Bond of the books. I can appreciate Dalton, but for me this is not really Bond.

Yeah, apparently Fleming, who was a weirdo, let's be real here, but hey, liked Lazenby best and you are right, did NOT care for Connery. I have yet to see all the Bond movies but I hear great things about Craig. I did like the one-off Connery did NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN I think it is called, where they could not even use the classic music. I adored Moore but in FFOLKES, not really the Bond series, that was just all too silly. xo

Dalton is the only Bond where you could actually believe he could be a MI6 agent. In my mind that makes him the best. The others all have an element of parody and Daniel Craig is nowhere near as suave enough, but he isn't helped by the awful writing. Pearce Brosnan started off well, but the series gradually went downhill after TND, he lost his identity and the less said about the last film the better. They could badly do with a Dalton style makeover now. Bond has lost his identity again.

I have to say Moore is my favorite, and it's funny that you give Dalton a pass on things you destroyed Moore over that was very unfair, I thought you were trying to do an unbiased look but obviously your not i was enjoying your videos but after destroying my favorite Bond and giving a pass for the same things to the one you obviously like, not to mention giving him like 4 videos for one of his movies I have no desire to watch the rest of your series, not that you care but i had to say it.
