Caan said "Thief" was his best performance in a film. As good as he's been in all his other movies, I agree wholeheartedly.
@andrewgardner56786 жыл бұрын
I agree. It is James Caan's best film along with El Dorado, godfather 1 and 2, eraser and Mickey blue eyes.

Andrew Gardner dude, you cant name five films as his best. Thats why there is the discussion, best means 1. And thief it is,
@waynej26085 жыл бұрын
Yep, Thief is Caan's best performance. I don't get why he didn't receive more recognition for it, ie, Academy Award nomination. Ah, well, that's all bullshit anyway, I suppose. I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention another great lead role he did, The Gambler. Came out in 74, to not much fanfare, and seems to have been largely forgotten. That's too bad, because next to Thief and The Godfather, I feel it stands amongst his best work. And Caan has other great roles, as well. A very talented actor.
@dr.juerdotitsgo51194 жыл бұрын
don't forget his brilliant performance in Misery, although people tend to overlook that kind of performance and favors more physical, over-the-top ones (aka Kathy Bates')

@@daughterofolaf All these twerps on here chirping that James Caan isn't underrated nor has he ever been. Seriously? You numbnuts do realize he spent the prime of his career fighting tooth and nail for staring roles from peers that he was living in the shadows of. Guy's like Pacino, Hoffman, Hackman, Redford, Reynolds, etc. Imagine trying to beat those guys out for leading roles year in and year out. Caan was never appreciated like those guys were, hence he's never gotten the respect he deserves as an actor. And he's never gotten nearly as many great films roles as he should have. Caan is one of the most charismatic and entertaining actors there's ever been in Hollywood. The bottomline is he's VERY underrated (in the movie world). It doesn't matter if you love his work. Facts are facts.

One of the most underrated actors ever. "El Dorado," "Rabbit, Run," "The Godfather," "Slither," "Cinderella Liberty," "The Gambler," "Freebie and the Bean," "Godfather, Part II," "Rollerball," "Funny Lady," "Silent Movie," "Comes A Horseman," "Hide in Plain Sight, " "A Bridge Too Far," and "Theif." If Caan never made another movie after a run like that, he'd still be one of the greatest. 'Cept he went ahead and made about 80 more films, many also very fine, including "Chapter Two," "For the Boys," "City of Ghosts," "Misery," and "Bottle Rocket." Unbelievable achievement!

John Santucci owned that drill. After finishing Thief he went back to burglary and back to jail. Thief was derived from 'The Home Invaders: Confessions of a Cat Burglar by Frank Hohimer." The book was very different. Many upscale subdivisions were robbed back then. Hohimer preferred to rob a house with the owners at home. He or one of his acquaintances robbed U.S. Senator Charles Percy and murdered his daughter.

It's called acting. In this movie, his character is one of the coldest, most heartless guys you'll see. Weirdly, you feel bad for him, even in the scene where he kicks Tuesday Weld out. He somehow manages to convey the fact that this is a deeply damaged person, who decided he has one shot at a nice life, and as soon as it's clear that that chance is blown, there's only revenge.
@brinsonharris98162 жыл бұрын
He really was kind and personable. Knew a guy who was working his way through college at University of Miami at one of the five star hotels in the mid 70s, and James Caan was a frequent guest-always very kind and respectful to hotel staff. My friend got to drive him to the airport in the hotel courtesy limo and they talked movies, sports and women all the way. Funny guy just being himself. This is that James Caan as an older man.

I'll admit I was a Cann Dog since Brian's Song! And everything he's done since! Thief was Cann at his best! The filming on location in Chicago places I recognized and had been at, the filming angles, the music everything was fantastic! Especially the scene where Cann & Welds sitting at the HoJo over 90 was a great scene when Cann showed Welds his collage to explain his life goals! Was fantastic! I grew up at 1212 Larkin Ave (LHFC) in Elgin, I had a collage of my Mom & Brothers it never happened either just aged out! That movie is the closest thing to how the the not made wise guys really do work! You work for the made people or its nothing! My Mom had a boyfriend Tony G. a Sicilian Jew from the West Side, he had a crew of independents. Teamster hijacks, they were in on it too! Making money he does a job a robbery for a friend from Chicago! No choice! They all get busted 5 at Joilet! In the "60's"! I really liked and respected him! Never paid for squat! Best Christmas I ever had is with Tony! Gets me a Football, Christmas he's only wearing skacks & a wife beater no shoes or socks and is throwing the football to me in the Winter in Des Plains Illinois! Thats is the part of movie he got right! not every moment is a hijacking & shoot out! There are normal times! Love Cann RIP and this movie! There might flashier Wise Guy movies? But none come close to reality! it just entertainment! You know like all the Jessie James Movies! And then you see The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward John Ford! A Great Movie because delved into the real back lives of these so-called Gangsters! Actually weren't that different than you & I! Thief & James Cann portrayed the same reality! TMI I Can't help it!
