Definitely a top ten director of the last 40 years. Possibly even top five. He isn't afraid to take on a production with a huge scope, and his action scenes deliver.

Hes phenomenal. And this film, despite IMO the questionable scene of First officer Murdoch, murdering Jack's friend, "Titanic" was an absolute masterpiece.

He later visited the family of Murdoch and apologised as well as issuing a public apology. Should’ve changed name of guy, a little cheeky.

music is one of the most important parts of any movie but it takes a good director to recognize that talent and use it to its best. a great score with a badly made movie is not going to be very popular.

Imagine “Titanic” without the fictitious and nauseating characters of Jack, Rose, and Cal. The main reason for those characters and the actors who portrayed them, was to capture the lucrative teen to early twenties market. That demographic could have cared less about Titanic’s story, hence Cameron’s ridiculous inclusion of “star crossed” lovers. It appears many of those teens viewed the film more than once. The redeeming quality of the film was the stunning recreations of some of the interior, although green screens and CGI were also utilized. And not to forget the magnificent costumes! The Oscar for best screenplay slipped through his fingers; a result of the Jack and Rose imaginary silliness, and the superb screenplay of “Good Will Hunting” which captured the screenplay Oscar. There is no doubt Jim has added to our knowledge of the Titanic with his explorations of the ship before filming, and others in the years after the film’s premiere. I applaud him for those efforts. But Jack and Rose should have been pushed overboard in the first hour of the film. 😂

I agree, I noticed that too. He looks very passionate while talking about making the movie and doing all the research for it and it always makes it more fascinating for me to see someone speak so passionately about their interests, hobbies or jobs. He’s one of the best directors in the world

Did you catch the comment that this interview was conducted on the cusp of the movie releasing? Charlie Rose, nor James Cameron, knew at that time what sort of success it would blossom into. Fascinating to get their views at this moment.

It's much like watching a real interview with Harrison Ford.. and I'm not talking about when he's on a promotional tour.. when it comes to story telling, you can see the passion... side note: I dont think Harrison could work with Cameron lol... mainly cuz Harrison isn't a real directable type person and Cameron is a very "in-control" director

Not only did he do that, he also made three different versions of Avatar; and I hear he has four sequels in the works.

I bet it definately transformed you even more if you saw it in a theatre. I never did, but youre right, it takes you on that ship, and makes you a part of one of the biggest tragedies of the 20th century.

It's become trendy to bash Titanic but I agree with you. It was a pop culture PHENOMENON, the likes of which we see only once every couple of generations. Titanic's box office INCREASED week upon week as it went along. That just DOES NOT happen.

True. There is an interview with Kate Winslet where she said that Cameron ALWAYS corrected her and others when they incorrectly referred to Titanic as a boat. He would say "It's a ship, not a boat"...

Yeah, he was a real person. I remember reading that he had drank so much liquor that it enabled him to survive being partially submerged in the ice cold water for as long as he did. The liquor kept him warm.

I feel like it's become so cliche to people but I've seen the film many times and I think it's an amazing moving story ever and then it was an epic and tragedy like Gone with the Wind or something

People find reasons to slag the film off because it's not cool to like something that everybody else likes. There's the notion that if everyone likes it, it can't be REALLY that good because the majority of the masses aren't intelligent enough to appreciate truly good films. For that reason, negative criticism generated with that mindset says nothing useful, and nothing objective, about the quality of the film.

He’s been to titanic over 30 times alone. He’s been to the Mariana Trench on a sub he helped design. He wrote Avatar in the early/mid 90s and just kept asking the co-founder of a cgi company he helped found if they could make it. He kept asking every few years until he was told they had the tech to do it, so he made it. The man is brilliant.

If James Cameron really wanted to be able say those things, he has the experience, the personality and the background to get them said regardless of what some interviewer might try to do. He agreed to the interview, and he knows what they are like. And whatever the case, people always love to vilify the interviewer in interviews with dearly loved megastars like this - it's part of the fun it it for them. But because of that, they will look for any excuse to do so and thus the resulting criticism of the interviewer really doesn't mean much of any great import.

@@catherinespark I think "vilify" is a bit strong. It was a small criticism. I agree with you that if James Cameron had wanted to answer he would have, but my problem is that I wanted to hear the answer, and many other answers that were cut off.

Yeah, I hate how badly Ismay tends to get treated in Titanic films (not to mention how he was persecuted when he was still alive). Even if he did encourage speed, which there’s very little evidence of, he wasn’t calling the shots, and the captain & crew didn’t take undue risks relative to the practices of the time. And after the collision, Ismay worked hard alongside the crew to get passengers into lifeboats, and only got himself into a lifeboat (one of the last launched) when there was no-one else around and still many open seats.
