In 1953, in the experimental reactor at Chalk River, Canada, almost exactly this same scenario occurred, The United States Atomic Energy Commission was asked to put together a team of experts to go to Canada to see if they could help with a fix of the situation. At the time, the only organization that had qualified engineers who were also Nuclear experienced was the reactor development group of the United States Navy, headed by Admiral Hyman Rickover. He sent a two man team to Canada, and one of the two went into the reactor containment building to open the troublesome valve by hand, in preparation of hot-scramming the reactor, which he also did, by hand. That Navy Lieutenant, one of the most qualified nuclear reactor engineers in the world at the time, was Rickover's protege, and was a graduate of the Naval Nuclear Power School and of MIT, with a Masters degree in Nuclear Engineering. He eventually became the 39th President of the United States. Jimmy Carter.

Wow, didn't know that, thank you for sharing the story, very interesting educational background for a president, obviously a genius. Carter, the president who probably most embodied the term public servant, has been much maligned and unfairly labeled as ineffective, mostly the bi-product of a predatory election campaign by Reagan. To know the measure of the man, you need only to look at his life post presidency, one dedicated to public service and diplomacy in times of world crisis. It's shameful that he's not cast in a more heroic light, but I'd imagine in his humility, he could care less

When he says "two civilian nuclear engineers" and they flash the pictures of the two meatheads, I about died. Funniest thing I've seen on youtube in some time. Bravo.

I'm still with Vinnick on this issue. Nuclear is still the safest and cleanest energy option on the planet.

As well written as this is... If you have the stomach for it go watch “K-19, the widow maker.” Based on actual events a Soviet submarine suffers a reactor failure and the SOVIETS (whom Bernie Sanders loved and revered) only could send chemical suits on this sub’s voyage since they had no radiation suits. The radiation suits wouldn’t have really helped enough, but chem suits are like a raincoat for ☢️ The sub crew is told that if the reactor goes critical the explosion could be interpreted as a first strike and NATO could respond and we’d have a nuclear holocaust/MAD scenario as the US and USSR throw everything they can at each other. Nuclear engineering teams go into the reactor in teams to attempt repairs and as they come out they experience radiation sickness. These events were largely kept secret until the fall of the USSR.

If you think Bernie Sanders has any love for the Russian government or Putin for that matter then you are quite literally out of your god damned mind.

Who's crack pipe you been smoking? Bernie Sanders did not "love and revere" the Soviets. Sounds like something a dumb ultra-right looney website would say. He went to Russia in 1988 and the height of Glasnost to form closer ties by twinning his city- what's next, gonna say Reagan loved the Soviets too because he also welcomed closer ties?? Honestly, try learning about what Gorbachev was doing in Russia at that time.
