M Mlas I largely find Abby annoying, but her point was valid. She’s expressing how she’s always experienced life as a thin woman which has consequently created a bubble where she’s never had to think about the day to day struggles of being overweight. Pregnancy taught her the minutia of issues related to having additional weight that she would’ve never experienced without pregnancy and how it’s built a newfound empathy for the experiences of plus sized women. She’s also clear to say that the experience in temporary and she only got a glimpse of what it’s like.. Now only if she had that level of introspection & humility for poor/working class people and people of color

If not for shame I would have never gotten sober. People suffering with morbid obesity are addicted and they are killing themselves. If not for shame I would have a tombstone not 25 years of sobriety. If friends and loved ones had told me that it's just a cute aspect of my personality or it's one of the things that makes me special. They would have ended me. Shame can be a life-saving tool for loved ones watching someone committing slow motion suicide. My results are not unique and I thank everyone who shamed me when I was killing myself.

I don’t think we should fat shame people but as a population in the western world, America in particular, we need to acknowledge that not only is being ok with being fat hurting individuals but more importantly it’s fucking up people’s live all over the world because people are being self-indulgent and have no willpower.

Secondly, and I can't believe I have to say this, none of the things you just listed exists or is accepted because of population control. Just take a look at how many orphans there are. Maybe it would be good for some more people to adopt. And lastly, why is accepting people and giving women equality propaganda? I get the feeling none of the panellists actually watched Bill Maher’s show. His point wasn’t to “fat shame” people, but that democrats in the primaries will only address Medicare and not unhealthy lifestyles and taking responsibility. And no point did he imply that you should purposely insult people but that society has can gone to the point where you cannot say anything when it comes down to weight. When I was kid at like age 10 or something, I brought a plate of chips in a restaurant to my table, and I saw this mother and father looking at it in sadness...I don’t know why I noticed, I just remember being self aware all of a sudden, and then asked my mother ‘do I have too many chips on my plate?’ She said something like ‘oh you do, silly, dont just have chips, try other things’ and ever since that day I decided to lose weight and by the time I was 18 I was the healthiest I’ve ever been. It’s painful to be shamed but it envoked me to do something about it because for a brief moment I realised I hate being fat.

@@neonrays28 False. First of all, obese people spend an incredible amount of money on food (the bad ones unfortunately). Secondly, rice and beans or lentils very healthy, and very cheap. Nobody chooses to be obese. The diet industry is a billion dollar industry! Obesity became a problem when dieting became the solution. A meta analysis of the diets show a 97% fail rate. With the side effect of weight gain. Would you take a cure that causes u to fail and get worse? I think not...but that's what is offered. It was concluded that it is better to never diet in the first place. It is better for your health overall and psyche. Google Intuitive eating research for more into. If I may, CIG smoking is a choice in the beginning.. U don't need it to live like food. U can go without it. U can't go without food... Good luck to us all! Don't know what everyone else thinks about this, but as a personal trainer it really gets under my skin to hear multi millionaires debating this issue and using it for ratings (on both sides of the debate). The vast majority of ppl are dealing with issues that quite honestly Bill and the panel on the view don't fully understand or appreciate. The answer to this question of fat shaming isn't one extreme or the other. YES, there are many underlying reasons for weight gain, (the community you live in, emotional issues, poverty, access to certain types of foods, PCOS, Thyroid issues...etc.). But also, NO, we should not just fully excuse all weight gain and treat it as an inevitable circumstance or be content with it. There are healthy solutions and personal responsibility will play a role. Many of the obese ppl I have trained and helped all felt a great sense of satisfaction once they developed the confidence to believe that indeed they did have some control over their weight and could manage it.

You'll get somebody telling you how they went healthy and didn't lose weight. But those stories always tend to be about ppl who didn't try for long enough & were expecting instant results, or ppl who are simply not being honest about their caloric intake. If you burn more than you consume, you will lose weight. That is just your body works (unless you are on some sort of medication that makes it hard, which is NOT THE MAJORITY of obese people). Yes, people have different metabolisms and lose/gain easier, but as you said, it is ALWAYS possible to lose the weight. For 99% of the population of obese ppl, you just need to be putting in the effort. And no, you shouldn't be bullied for being overweight, but we need to stop acting like it's perfectly fine when you're really just shortening your life and don't feel like addressing the problem. We have commercials that literally make smokers feel like the worst people on earth, but say anything about somebody needing to lose weight and you're the worst. And I am speaking in terms of being unhealthy & your doctors telling you that you have a problem. Of course there are ppl that are bigger but not unhealthy. The rebuttal always seems like we are trying to force everybody to look like models or something,

The point is that nobody outside of Sumo circles wants to be fat. Everybody who is fat is already ashamed of it and they're either already working on it or sinking into despair born of frustration. Why does that cheap rush seem to have so much more life qualitiy for them, than what they're giving up?? And what about all that money, do some people actually gorge themselves into debt these days?? Please understand that in Europe, most people aren't obese, poor and rich alike. The fact that people can't stop eating fast food is not a money issue. Even if you ate only fast food. McDonald's has healthy options. In fact, nearly all fast food joints have healthy options now. And look at Meghan McCain and James Corden, I would say they are doing well financially. It’s about the crap foods we eat that contribute to obesity. AND while posting pics of these same candidates take huge bites into these same processed foods that contribute to bad eating habits. Then he goes into his diatribe about fat shaming. But the major takeaway people only see are the jokes about fat shaming and NOT the criticism about the root causes of it OR the irony of the Dems talking about what healthcare policies we should adopt INSTEAD of rooting out the cause of poor health from the beginning (poor diet/poor food choices). Are you sure you watched it in its entirety?

VIRGINIA DELGADO I disagree. There are people that understood. The problem is most people that don’t watch the entirety of things and base their opinions on 15 sec Instagram clips. That’s why Donald Trump and make his BS claims of fake news and people DO stop and question news sources. The cast here literally criticize Bill by rehashing the same causes of obesity that Bill himself criticizes the Dems for not addressing in the debates. I humbly disagree with the cast of the view on this. I think anyone that fails to grasp the larger issue being addressed by nit picking the smaller points of the message are doomed to be their own roadblock in life. James Corden struggles with obesity are a problem, no one argues that, but the same way we criticize addiction, recognize that it’s a problem and encourage people to go to rehab to beat it, we should do that to people while are obese. Instead we tell people it’s ok and others are wrong for fat shaming them. Fat shaming a women who has a voluptuous body type and claiming she’s not skinny enough to be a model and criticizing a man that is three hundred pounds and eats 4 Big Macs and a large Diet Coke are two completely different things. The man has no excuse and telling him it’s ok and no one should fat shame him is BS.

The most important part of Bill's speech is: "Shame is the first step in reform. It's what goads people into saying 'Maybe I can do better' as opposed to 'I'm always perfect as I am. How dare you.'" I agree. If people tolerate negative things around them, those things will become the norm. But if the community lets you know that your behavior is not acceptable, you get pressured into changing what you do. I'm not American, some of the people I saw when I lived in the US were shockingly huge. Seeing them eating greasy food and drinking sugar water out of small buckets was offensive to me! Sure, overweight people don't want to hear criticism or get stared at in a restaurant. It is a sensitive matter. Try to go hungry, grab a fruit and stop telling everyone how rude they are for stating the obvious. Its Funny how Bill made great points (as he usually does) and NONE of these shows mentioned it Over a week ago when it was filmed. IN FACT they never reacted to it either. The only reason we are talking about this is because of our need to indulge in feuds and making some people good guys and others bad guys. The actual topic doesn't even matter. Otherwise we would have discussed it last week when Bill brought it up.

Dudemeister67665 Good point, but shaming the way someone looks still isn’t a good move. And I’m not sure what America has to do with it, because there are millions of people on this country who do go out and feed those starving children (kindness does exist here). And if the man likes to eat so be it , he’s rich, and if you where a rich comedian you would eat too( I would too, cause why not). So basically what I’m saying is America isn’t a terrible place, you can’t just point out an entire country as if they where the same. It’s like saying all Africans in Africa are thirsty and starved and all Russians like vodka, or all English people have fucked teeth😂. I’m not trying to call you out or anything, I just wanted to say this to make you think about how much worse things could be fire this planet. We could all be dead right now.

Bill is half right, and The View panelists are half right too. So what’s the middle ground? As Bill pointed out, shaming has its useful place, to shame people to wear seatbelts, to shame people to not be racist. But what he failed to distinguish is that those examples are of things people have *control* over but *chose* not to do. In instances of bad choices shame can work to get people to do the right thing. But not everything a person does is based on a choice, as pointed out by the panelists on The View. But the problem with the opinion of the panelists on The View is that not everything is beyond our control either. Yes, being fat is not a choice for everyone. I would say it is a choice for some people. But it is not a choice to be fat for many people, because individual genetics play a huge role in SOME people (not all, but some). An entire ethnic group is even predisposed to being big (Pacific Islanders evolved from Austronesians, and are essentially genetically modified versions of Austronesians who are predisposed to being really big). Being gay is not a choice. You can’t shame someone into being straight. At the most, a heteronormative society might be able to shame bisexual members of its society into acting only on their heterosexual urges (because for bisexuals who they are attracted to is a choice, so they can chose to act on one or the other), but that won’t work on homosexuals in a heteronormative society because that choice is absent for homosexuals (they’re only attracted to the same sex), so the expectation that homosexuals can be shamed into acting out heterosexually is misguided and harmful. So yes, shaming has its place, for those instances where things are being done as a bad choice. But shaming should be avoided as counterproductive in instances where there is no choice in what you or any other person might disagree with, such as being fat (in those it it predisposed by genetics or ethnicity or disease), or in certain instances sexuality, etc.
@KM-mf1se
@KM-mf1se 4 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better myself. We do however shame people into being straight and it 'works'. As in, people try and be straight even though that's not what their body is telling them that they should be. The same way I feel about bigger people. Your body's genetics are telling you be this size, so why are you fighting it and being balemic so that you can be a smaller size? Because of the shame. And that's the consequence of shaming things out of your control. You control if you put on your seatbelt. You control if you smoke a cigarette (besides addiction taking that control away from some people). But that's not the same argument when it comes to how much your body absorbs and discards things that you eat. It's different for each person.

@dsp6373

ExPFC Wintergreen v2.0, i agree with that sentiment, however, whether we were made addicts was originally done on purpose is debatable. Why? Because the human body evolved to crave sugars and fats precisely because they are the best and most efficient sources of energy. The problem, however, is that we humans relatively recently in our evolutionary history found a way to manufacture sugars and fats artificially in amounts that have never existed in nature. Our hunter gatherer ancestors needed as much sugar as they could get. So we therefore evolved to crave it. But sugars in their natural sources and in their natural states always come in small quantities and always accompanied by other things, preventing overconsumption. Fructose exists in fruits, but you would have to impossibly consume a whole bag of oranges to get the sugar found in one glass of orange juice. There’s just too much fibre in fruits that eating them itself prevents you from over consuming sugar in its natural state from natural sources. Yet how easily do some people drink a quart of orange juice? And that’s pure orange juice without added sugars. Now imagine artificial orange drinks with added sugars. Now imagine soda pop. You would have to drink an impossible amount of milk to get fat from lactose (the sugar found in milk). There’s just too much protein and whey. We evolved to crave fat. But how many animals would we need to hunt and devour to get enough fat on its natural state from cuts of meat we eat, or how many olives would we need to eat to get the equivalent of a teaspoon on oil. But how easily do we now consume the oils we press from olives. Or margarines. We’ve even discovered how to extract the fat from milk to make butter. We evolved to crave all the things we require to survive. That craving evolved because we needed a reason to seek it out in nature in enough quantities to meet our requirements. Now, however, we have learnt to manufacture it all (changing our surrounding circumstance) but our craving for it has not had the time to evolved to crave it less given the vast artificial availability of it all.
