I love his smile, it's so childlike. He looked amazing on b/w tv but nothing can compare to the color of his eyes on technicolor.

They wrung SO MUCH drama out of the most innocuous things, I felt. The "2nd hand" stuffiness of the conventional 1950s sort of got annoying

I've noticed early James Dean was HEAVILY used for upholding the status quo in these televised plays. There's quite a few of them on KZfaq.

His acting style was so ahead of its time! However I think the live recordings made it seem more realistic as well with slip ups.

This live television drama was performed after he returned to NY after having filmed East of Eden, but the picture as yet had not officially premiered- that was not until March of 1955. He looks wonderful here- his face is full fleshed from eating better, and he's wearing nice clothes. He is very comfortable in front of the camera and his eyes- as usual- are intense, underneath which are those famous dark circles. Good upload, restored to better than original visual quality.

Monique, thank you for the info. Jimmy does have so much more confident now than in his previous television plays. When I saw Barbara O'Neil listed in the credits, i knew the name but it didn't immediately come to me until I saw her. She played Ellen O'Hara in Gone with the Wind and the hypochondriac wife the Duchesse de Praslin of Charles Boyer in "All This, and Heaven Too"....the big star was Bette Davis. I always thought she had such presence on-screen as she does here.

Pretty engaging stuff! It’s cool to see a short drama like this live, it’s probably close to what watching a theatre play with James would be like. Of course I wanted to watch it for him, and even though it’s hard to attach yourself to characters in shorter dramas like this, he comes off likeable and charming as always. I think Kurt Kasznar and Gusti Huber who plays the couple Alex and Della deserve credit too, when the investigator is questioning them or when they’re deciding what to do with the bracelet, you can see them passionate and nervous. I think I would’ve liked the section with them deciding what to do with the bracelet to be stretched out a little, and some more character development, but overall pretty good, one of the better TV dramas James Dean’s been in. I haven’t seen them all yet but another favourite of my shorts James was in is “Something For An Empty Briefcase”

Remarkable writing. I'm amazed at the quality of acting, not only from James Dean but all the actors. Its good to see him playing something other than edgy, troubled youth. We witness lives dulled by wealth, some to the point of bickering while common people intermingle, dedicated to their tasks. Then something happens that causes those most dedicated to question each others' honors. The story is taut throughout but at intervals pulls back just enough. I'm sure it had viewers in late 1954 glued to their TV sets. Not me, I was one year old! In the next seven years that followed I came to know that popular tinkling piano melody. Many musical artists of that era had their renditions of it.

James Dean here playing his customary character. The rawness of youth struggling to acustom itself to the maturity the world demands. In this story presenting it in the context of Dean as a vulnerable young man working as waiter in the dining room of an elite resort. Where being a good waiter is considered an achievement on the level of receiving a Nobel Prize.

He does 'force' emotions sometimes, but was definitely a natural, and certainly had charisma. I think he would have become one of the greats. I guess we'll never know, as he will forever be remembered as an icon of misspent youth.

I've seen pretty much all the television footage that has surfaced along the years and i can guarantee he had it all and was on his way to become truly great, he put so much great work on tv and he hadn't reach his prime yet, he died at only 24 and Brando started out in movies at 26/27 already. I agree with you that he had some forced moments, but he also had some moments that were just plain masterpieces, like in Something for an empty briefcase or The Dark Dark Hours, He was going to be a master of the craft within a few years
