The fact a dude who was first off his boat during D-Day was also sat in front of peak Howard Stern is a hell of a culture clash if I’ve ever seen one. What an absolute hero he was to survive it all though.

Poor James. Wish people would have given him the time to speak freely w/out interrupting him every 10 seconds. I would have loved to have sat down with him and given him the floor to share his life un-impeded for hours if not days/weeks. When you have people like James, respect them, honor them, listen to them. Give them the time to share. Not only can you have make them happy, you can learn a lot for yourself. He also talked about how mad he was at Shatner when his dog died running into a sprinkler head and Shatner started laughing when he told him. Overall, I think he complained less about Shatner than most of the others but he had some things to say over the years.

I dont like all this trash talking about Shatner and they never give specific reasons for their hate. It really does seem like they are just JEALOUS of him. Also, if he were to walk into the room, their tone would change. Doohan brags about all the radio shows he's done, well i can tell you this: he and Shatner both have narrated Star Trek books, Shatner is amaIngly good at narrating, Doohan is TERRIBLE, he'll put you to sleep. His acting was pretty dull too. When people think Star Trek, the first person that comes to mind is definitely Captain Kirk. Followed by Spock. Guys like Doohan and Takei just HATE that. And for Doohan to say Shatner "doesnt know how to act" is just BS. Shatner is a Shakespearian (classically) trained actor, just like Patrick Stewart (Picard) He brought the character of Captain Kirk to life, made it ICONIC. The rest of the crew was merely support, and they all resented it.
@ELEKTROSKANSEN

Somehow I never heard Walter Koenig speaking ill of Shatner... Makes me wonder how it fits the jealousy problem. Can it be that one of the most famous (misquoted) lines from Star Trek ("beam me up, Scotty") does MENTION Doohan's character, thus making him forever known in the popculture, but is spoken by Shatner and thus is forever tied to HIM..? It's like, everyone knows the line, everyone knows who says it, who is adressed by it - but honestly: only the die hard fans nowdays know who James Doohan was. Lots of people know of Shatner, even if they didn't watch Star Trek, but not many know Doohan after all these years...

I don't dare to suggest that mr Doohan was not speaking the truth, because I admire him - like I do with all Star Trek actors. I do, however, refuse to think that William Shatner is as much of an asshole as they paint him to be here. I bet there were some conflicts between the cast, but I also suspect some of the things they say are exaggerated for whatever reason. William Shatner is my hero and always will be no matter what!
@robvangessel3766
@robvangessel3766 3 жыл бұрын
I'd always wished Trek cast members were more specific abt just what Shatner did on and off the sets that was so contemptible. The only thing we have is that he'd take a director to the side and make sure the camera was on him most of the time. That gives us a general idea, but it doesn't quite justify all the spewing venom.
@Xydonus
@Xydonus 2 жыл бұрын
Lot of it is overblown. Even Nicholes has lightened up about it over the years, her book isn't as condemning, going so far to say that Shatner's inward look at himself, his 'ego', is just who he is, and people have taken him the wrong way. He likes being the center of attention, and he can be an ass when you catch him at a bad time, but he's not as bad as people say. George Takei had 'beefs' with Walter Koenig and in general was a fairly spiteful jealous person. Some of the stuff he has said hasn't aged well (and his more recent comments) so its interesting to see that we've only been fed one perspective. Shatner doesn't talk shit about his cast mates, except when he's 'reacting' to their comments, and sometimes he'll have a dig during his stand-ups, but nothing as vitriol as what Takei has said.

I've seen several of these interviews with Doohan and Takei bashing Shatner. They never site anything tangibly horrible about the guy though. They rarely speak of any 1 incident that you can point at and say there, that's why hes an ass. It's usually pretty vague or shit like, "hes a horrible actor, and I'm sooo much more worthy of admiration because I'm better". Takeis beef started according to takei because, "I wanted to be captain of my own ship and Shatner wouldn't let me". It all comes off as crazy bitter jealousy.
@drevm7991
@drevm7991 3 жыл бұрын
I’m just starting this video but Takei never said he was worthy of admiration and I’m pretty sure he never said he was a better actor, he agreed he wasn’t a great actor and made some jokes. George has pointed out his general personality traits, that he’s selfish, he wanted every minute and every scene to be about him, that he lies about things (like George not inviting him to his wedding) etc etc. There doesn’t have to be some giant incident of Shatner beating everyone up, it was years of him just being a general asshole. Go listen to the time where Howard got them both on the phone at the same time, it’s clear Shatner is the asshole and the bullshit artist.
@R.I.P.AlienJack
@R.I.P.AlienJack 3 жыл бұрын
@@drevm7991 You're obviously taking their side of the story then because Shatner still says that he never got the wedding invitation. It makes sense that George didn't want him there being the one with the beef. Keep in mind that Shatner never had the problem with Takei it was always his costars having "jealousy issues" and not all of them had issues...just the ones that didn't really have much of a career outside of star trek. It's always been about jealousy. Takei and Doohan are 2 classically trained actors and Shatner was just some kid off the streets who got all the attention. You can hear it when Doohan attacks Shatners portrayal of a drunk.

things like deliberately screwing up his 2-shots so only his closeups were usable; counting lines of dialog to make sure he always had more, insisting others parts were cut down; reminding cast and crew from the getgo that he was the star, and lights, camera angles, scripts were to be designed around him. to talk in detail in public about these matters would be so much inside baseball -- but shatner was always a careerist monster . . .

How does someone who can't act wind up in a major MGM movie version of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov? I like Jimmy Doohan and all the Trek cast, but whatever you can say about Shatner, I don't buy the "he can't act" stuff. We've seen tons of Shatner's early work, much of it outstanding. Like the Twilight Zone' Nightmare at 20,000 Feet', for example. Doohan boasted an extensive resume in stage, screen, and radio, but Shatner can do likewise. Shatner had 5 years stage experience in his youth before he even saw a camera. From what everyone says about him, he's probably a pain-in-the-ass to work with on the set, but from an audience's POV he's a neverending pleasure. More so than any other Trek actor. We don't know the man, but he's fun to watch, and, sorry, but that's what sells.
@keefriff99
@keefriff99 3 жыл бұрын
We all know Shatner hams it up and gets ridiculously melodramatic at times, but he's a fine actor overall. It's easy to laugh at some of his absurd moments, but when you take his entire career, he's done some legitimately good work. As you said, who else can do what Shatner does? He's absurd, but you'll never forget him.

Shatner is a trained Shakespearean actor. My parents saw him in summer stock in NY in "There's a Girl in My Soup" and said he was terrific. He was also very good in "The Andersonville Trial" on PBS. I think he was better as a stage actor than a screen actor, which requires a lower profile. But if you watched "Boston Legal", it was Shatner you turned in to see, despite all the other lawyers on the show. Whatever the feud between Shatner and his "Star Trek" castmates (read Shatner's biography), Doohan shouldn't be so smug.
@Kinann
@Kinann 3 ай бұрын
Seems to me, the friction stems from Shatner taking his work a lot more seriously than any others that worked with him. He was egotistical and driven more than everyone else. Even today when you hear him recollecting he looks at it as a job that he had, nothing more. He's not sentimental about it at all. Everyone's likely worked with someone like this.

The gossip and slander is unbecoming. Saying Shatner can’t act is nothing but bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness, Shatner is a great actor. How many times did Shatner offer the olive branch? There never seems to be a reason given for his hatred for the man. Notice Nimoy 🖖. Kelly and Shatner were the three main characters of Star Trek and they didn’t have a problem with Shatner. Could it be jealousy? The bitter comments just ruins Scotty for me.

This was when Howard had balls! He’d never do this today (unless it’s to insult soft targets like Trump or Trump supporters).

I've never been into Star Trek and the few times I have tried I realised that the show was not for me but it seems like the stuff happening off camera was as action packed and interesting as the show itself. I can't help it I actually like Shatner and find him likable and fun but then again I have never worked with the guy. It's possible that it could be jealousy due to Shatner going on to become the most recognisable and "star" of the show but it's weird how they all feel the same.

Not "all" - only the ones that had smaller roles than Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly. And even that is not really true, because I never heard Walter Koenig speaking ill of him. Neither did I hear Nichols slandering Shatner. Come to think of it, it's only Doohan and Takei that seem to hate the guy...

Hot take: I wish we'd gotten modern Howard interviewing Doohan. The war bits would have been better. Doohan was a great man and while I'm not saying this is a horrible interview, Howard could have done better.

I hear what you’re saying. I would of loved to hear that aspect. Everyone else would hate you for admitting to want modern stern for anything. I still enjoyed this interview though.

Though I agree with you, this was 25 years ago - when most WWII vets were still alive. Howard has interviewed plenty of actors/WWII vets before this and was more fascinated with his take on Shatner.

Without Shatner playing Kirk, none of them would have become famous, Captian Kirk made the show, but i loved all of the other actors too.

This is a terrible interview, doesn't let Doohan talk, clapping all the time after saying stuff like you killed them right! clap clap clap! You and Oj love killing right! Did you want to kill Sulu!, he asks him! Just the worst interview ever.

I dont care who what or when but its low class to just talk about anybody because who knows what really happened or what motivates any of these people, Shatner seems ok to me and i think jealousy has a lot to do with it all, Shatner was king of the hill at that time😮

I respect Howard, he's turned his monologues into a business. But he's an atrocious interviewer. He hardly lets the guest get a word in. And when the guest is a non-assertive, unassuming guy like James Doohan, its infuriating.

I don't think he's been bad the last decade or so but this is one of his worst interviews from his crazy days. I said this a few minutes ago, I wish we'd gotten modern Stern doing this interview because we would have gotten so much more out of it and there would have been actual research done to cover for the fact that Howard didn't do any prep on him really. Really disappointed from this and I kind of feel bad for Mr. Doohan at points with this. Rare case where I feel that Howard should have given way more respect to a guest.

@warren3427 Who the fuck wants an NPR interview with Scottie from Star Trek?... Young Howard had energy and quick wit, knowing full well that the rapid fire cross examination style is more likely to get revelation and honesty...rather than let guests do their Tonight Show pre-programmed spiel.

This was ~1996, two years after the Robin Williams interview. Howard seems to mis-remember (or overdramatize) that 1994 Williams interview, but, whichever version of the story you believe, he started to realize "Uhh, I'm acting like a dork and ruining what could be fantastic conversations" during this period. Seemed to tone it down (somewhat) by the 2002-2005 timeframe. Not really defending the guy, except to say there are "Three Phases of Howard," and this cocky up-and-coming middle wasn't his best.
