This is honestly one of the reasons people consider the NBA soft nowadays: it's so-called superstars and MVP candidates who score 25+ a game like Harden who are atrocious defenders. IMO, to be a true star, you need to be at least good at defense. (K Leonard, Paul George, and Jimmy Butler are examples)

Ok he doesn´t put any effort any effort on playing defense but when you are playing 40 minutes every night and you are the single offensive threat on your team who carries the offensive load, when your coach only offensive strategy is get the ball to Harden and get out his way (similiar to how the Celts played with Bird ) then i can understand he might be pissed off and doesn´t care. Irving also played almost no defense before James went back and all of a suddent he ist a decent defender. Before the Thunder were a titel candiate, KD defense was also criticized. Then he got some help in Ibaka, Perkins, Harden and committed on defense

He's falling back to his old self again. The truth is Harden can play defense and can play it good, last season he finished 3rd in the NBA in steals and Houston finished 6th in defensive efficiency. But this season he's fallen back to his old habits, often he doesn't even look where the player he's guarding is and he is just jogging back when the other team is on the fastbreak. The problem isn't his defensive ability, it's his lack of interest and effort on defense. This season Harden is not even in the top 15 in steals so far, but even worse is that the Rockets got the second worst defense in the league. Harden is the biggest reason Rockets are struggling and McHale got fired, doesn't matter that he averages 27 points per game this season.

+elloos i hate to tell you this but harden gets steals because he doesn't play on ball defense... most of his steals come from leaving his assignment and going to the passing lanes, which then leave his man wide open.... When I coached in high school we use to have an athlete that broke the school record in steals 101 on a 20 game season and led the Conference we were in, but... he gave up the most on ball points on the team... we could never put him on the better players because of his liability with being 1 pass away on help side, he always over played the passing lanes and would get beat if he didn't get the steal, or he'd get back doored all day... That's the problem with when you look at steals per game in the NBA as well... look at Chris Paul's steals and Westbrook's steals those guys do it on ball and with the right timing while "usually" not giving up a shit ton of points...

+Will Martin You're right. Curry isn't lockdown but at least he moves his feet, keeps his hands up, communicates, and gives a flying fuck on defense. Much rather have a guy who tries hard on defense but isn't the best at it rather than someone like Haren who doesn't do anything on defense but demands the ball 99.9999% of the time on offense.
