James Hillman brilliantly illuminates; the myth of the hero killing animals as the cross-cultural origin of humanity's separation from "nature", the consequences of that sense of separation, human greed as a virtue of capitalism, how Descartes created litter, the ensouled nature of psychological phenomena, the strength and resilience of soul of colored people, the ugly American, the poetic culture of Iran, the anesthetization of Modern consciousness, denial in the American psyche, the cult of innocence, the fundamental importance of psychological transformation, the automobile as a self-mover and an empowerment by God, and closes with a discussion on the importance of fear for responsible action.

A wonderful thinker, just a gift, though he spoke of humanity as a collective despite being a psychologist. For this reason, those new to Hillman should not assume everyone is to blame, for he assumes all have the same power in his discussion addressing the collective. It's not quite the case, but, he was certainly speaking truth to power, and his ideas about humanity's connection to nature were beautiful, profound and true for all ages. Bit we might be the last age. Thank you for uploading this inspiring and healing discussion.

these interviewers are slightly juvenile, repeating the same content through different phrasing... but it was a great introduction to Hillman so big thanks .

The audio is terrible. I can hardly hear him, and cannot hear the interviewer at all.

For me, the age I would like to be 35:30 would be 53 minus the menopause.

I feel that Hillman is a very mixed bag. For instance at minute 9: "Maybe we [humanity] are a virus in the system. Maybe we don't belong." I immediately thought, "And he's a therapist? Believing that could make anyone suicidal!". He doesn't seem to get Christianity at all. And yet he also says that finding the world beautiful and falling in love with it is the remedy to modern ills, which is undoubtedly true.

If you could properly comprehend him that would make him a pretty simple guy wouldn't it?

The instinct to posses derives from the Lizard brain (part of the human brain) which is evolutionary as old as lizards. Humans just take it out of context.
