Après avoir initié en 2021 à l'IEA de Paris une collaboration internationale de recherche basée sur la manière dont la technologie façonne nos esprits, nous soutenons qu'un défi majeur pour la conception de l'avenir du travail à la frontière entre l'homme et la technologie découle d'une vision incontestée des systèmes d'information en tant qu'outils passifs plutôt que partenaires actifs. Concevoir des technologies qui augmentent les performances humaines en permettant un véritable dialogue entre l'homme et la technologie est le sujet fédérateur du Centre de collaboration pour la conception du travail d'information (CDIW).
Le professeur Hollan s'intéresse à la conception cognitive, à la cognition distribuée et incarnée, à l'interaction homme-machine, à la visualisation d'informations à plusieurs échelles, à l'interaction multimodale, à l'ethnographie cognitive et aux outils logiciels pour la conception et la visualisation. Son travail comporte quatre activités interdépendantes : le développement de la théorie et des méthodes, la conception de représentations, la mise en œuvre de prototypes et l'évaluation de leur efficacité afin de mieux comprendre l'espace de conception plus large dans lequel ils se situent.

A Network-of-Networks Collaboratory to Address the Grand Challenge of the Future of Information Work at the Human-Technology Frontier

After having initiated at the Paris IAS in 2021 an international research collaboration based on a new view of active information, we argue that a core challenge for designing the future of work at the human-technology frontier arises from an unquestioned view of information systems as passive tools rather than active partners. Designing technologies to augment human performance by enabling human-technology partnership is the unifying theme of our Collaboratory for Design of Information Work (CDIW). During this short visit Jim Hollan will renew connections with European collaborators.
Professor Hollan is Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Computer Science at University of California, San Diego. He is the founding co-director of the Distributed Cognition & HCI Lab and the Design Lab. His research explores the cognitive consequences of computational media. It is motivated by a belief that we are at the beginning of a paradigm shift in thinking about representational media, one that is starting to appreciate the importance of representations that are not only dynamic and interactive but also adapt to the structure of tasks, the history and context of activities, and our relationships with others. The goal is to better understand the cognitive, computational, and social ecology of dynamic interactive adaptive systems.
Professor Hollan’s interests span across cognitive design, distributed and embodied cognition, human-computer interaction, multiscale information visualization, multimodal interaction, cognitive ethnography, and software tools for design and visualization. My work involves four intertwined activities: developing theory and methods, designing representations, implementing prototypes, and evaluating their effectiveness to better understand the broader design space in which they are situated.
