The best part about his is this is back when musicians had a passion and didn’t need any sheet music as they took so much pride in it they’d learn every piece without the need of a sheet, it’s just incredible so sad that there aren’t many people as talented and skilled anymore

In the beginning of this piece ( 53:10 ) the orchestra makes a mistake. Probably a misunderstanding between the keyboard player and the conductor. But in a few seconds they recover and the beautiful song goes on well. I really like this orchestra also (and above all !!) for small mistakes made live. It means they REALLY played! And behind their beautiful music there is all humanity, not computers! "True" times that will never return, especially today when humanity is completely INSANE!

I´m comforted that you´re posting this...publicly. I affirm this, as many people testified that all the performances were playback. In an interview, James Last said that all the performances were live, except for some that were not possible for some reason. These were recorded before the performance. It must be taken into account that many songs that in the original albums were interpreted with voices...In the programs: "Starparade" and "Show-Express" were reinterpreted instrumentally only. Like other songs, they were played for the first time and never recorded on any album. Thank you very much for commenting on the video.

True ... James Last was always surrounded by good professional musicians. There were and there are music critics who called their music: "Elevator Music" (Term contemptuous ... "Music of elevator - Music of popcorn." Music to hear or not ... not to listen and to feel ...). For 2016 the publication of unpublished record material of James Last was announced. We are in 2017 and continue the differences in musical rights between the family of Last and the multinational Universal Music (Polydor Records). With the prolific James Last, along with Ray Conniff were of the musicians that more albums published ... there must be a lot of material to edit. I think that in the end, as everything is a matter of economic interests ... It will be Universal Music that when it opportune will publish, during Christmas periods, new material. The family of James Last little will be able to do ... It is more his daughter, Silke Last is the manager of the record company: by4 Records ... could publish this material. The important thing is that we "sad mortals" will limit ourselves to buying when they tell us ... "Marketing will always be about people's lives." Greetings and to continue enjoying the music of the teacher Last!

I agree with your comments about Matthias Classen. His style of playing didn't suit the James Last Orchestra in my opinion. He played an alto saxophone and seemed to play it in the upper registers too often. I think I read somewhere years ago that James Last didn't really like the saxophone as an instrument. However, a big band without a saxophone section doesn't sound right, and certainly towards the latter days of the Orchestra there was only one saxophone in the line up. Whilst some people have equated Last's music as being 'elavator music' the arrangements for the trumpet and trombone sections were in fact quite complex , and those musicians certainly earned their crust. My favourite era of the JLO was the 1960's and 1970's but from the late 1990's it just didn't do it for me. I then diversified into traditional American Big Band swing, and from that moment on I never looked back. There was an American band (Shep Fields) whose orchestra in the early 1940's was entirely made up of saxophones (thirteen of them that is) with the usual rythym section of acoustic guitar, string bass, piano and drums, but no trumpets or trombones. It had a good sound but was a bit samey and then later on he reverted to 4 trumpets 3 trombones and 5 saxes plus rythym. Getting back to these videos, I am pretty sure I bought these Starparade broadcasts on three DVD's, but where they have gone to, I know not. Are there any other Starparade broadcasts out there which haven't been released yet. ZDF certainly got one over the BBC and ITV here in Britain with that type of programme.

James Last's band wasn't a Big Band in traditional meaning. He prefered the brass sound and saxophone wasn't a section. It can be compared a bit with a brass band who plays in modern style.

Having said 'courtesy of Konrad Bogdan, Georges Delegayes and Detlef Surmann, in the first videos, the middle trombonist was I think Wolfgang Ahlers. I don't think he ever toured the UK with Last. At least I never saw him. To be fair on the other musicians they are from left to right Leif Uvemark, Manfred Moch (I believe) Harald Ende, and then Karl Hermann Luer, Heinz Habermann and perhaps Dieter Koch. Then Bernd Stefanowski on guitar, Robert Last on drums (you can see he is a proper jazz drummer by his technique) then Barry Reeves (more of a rock drummers technique). I would say Terry Jenkins however was his best drummer over the years, although not feautured on these videos. I don't know who the two percussionists are. We cant forget Joachim 'Benny' Bendorff. If I had one criticism of James Last, it would be that in my opinion he should have had a conventional saxophone section of at least four (two Alto and two Tenor) and dispensed with synthesizers. It eventually became two electronic for me. I wish he had followed the likes of the 1960's/1970s version of the Buddy Rich Big Band, which was also very funky.
@JosephNoise
@JosephNoise 7 жыл бұрын
What you mention about the saxophone section ... it's like that. I do not know why James Last, a follower of the sound of the American Big Bands ... never tried to increase this section. I agree that Terry Jenkins was his best drummer ... just like Andy Mackintosh his best saxophonist. On this subject ... also it was curious that from years 90 only used in its orchestra a saxophonist. Matthias Clasen the worst of all who have gone through the orchestra. I also think that his best stage was the 60's and 70's ... his best albums and his best sound.

Terry Jenkins is to my opinion the best drummer after Robert Last who was so jealous of his brother that he had to leave the band and died later on a too early age.

It's true!.. Robert Last's relationship with his brother Hans ... was very cold. Precisely tonight I was watching a small interview with the three brothers: The journalist is asked to James Last and there was enough complicity in the looks with his brother Werner; on the other hand, the look of his older brother Robert towards James Last is "tremendous". Reading your words, this interview has come to mind.
