I'm James M. Van Daalen. I'm a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon. My practice deals with issues of chest, lungs, circulation, stroke. I trained at Chicago, but I've lived in Louisville since 1988. I enjoy getting to know people. That's the best part of my practice. I know my patients as persons. We sit down and we form a team. We work on strategies and solutions. It's an honor to know these people.
I was born in Michigan. I trained in Chicago at University of Chicago. I spent some time at Creighton University and also in England doing esophageal fellowship. I came here in 1988 to do cardiothoracic and I fell in love with Louisville and I stayed.
When I went to medical school, I never thought I'd be a surgeon, but I found out I really like fixing things and the relationship with patients is so gratifying. When I'm not working, I love good food, fine dining. I like old cars, good books. I like to travel. I work on a couple old things. I have an old International and an old Volkswagen. Nothing fancy, mostly bailing wire and duct tape, and just enjoy keeping them running.
