The BBC screwed up big time by making the assumption that TopGear was bigger than Clarkson Hammond and May and it wasn't. Its the chemistry between JC RH JM. The fact they are so different but it somehow works..

I wonder if this is why in TG May and Hammond were always paired up on races like when they took the train or James flew them from Turin to London and Jeremy was in the Bugatti Veyron or the Aston (depending on the ep)

It's a bit more nuanced than that. Thing is, Jeremy was the main star of the show early on, so he could carry his own segments by himself, while James and Richard seemed to make a better team for travelling. Also, the whole point of all those cross-country races was, as per Jeremy, to prove that cars are better than public transport. And as that was his POV, he would take the car and James and Richard would take public transport. I'm also guessing that those early races are what fueled the chemistry between Richard and James that they make a more natural team now when it comes to travelling (compared to James and Jeremy).

I've always seen those three as a rock paper scissors combo. Clarkson beats May, May beats Hammond, Hammond beats Clarkson. So to me, May choosing Hammond was the obvious choice.

I believe that Chris Evans was forced to work with Matt LeBlanc. And they really really hated eachother. This didn't produce good TV. But each change it got worse and worse. The current version, Harris, McGuiness and Village Idiot, is by far the least appealing. I suspect the BBC now knows hardly anything about making quality TV programmes. It's now purely a property company.

I haven't really followed it, but post Clarkson top gear always felt like the spinoffs (America, Australia, etc) at best. The worst of it, though, is that Harris' youtube content just before joining top gear was top tier.

@verynormalman I agree, they had a decent lineup. I suppose it is reminiscent of the British trio, each coming from their own distinct direction and having differing viewpoints. I'd rate them above any post Clarkson top gear lineup, for sure.

Chris is great apart from the 'lets have a round of applause ' thing which ruined the his first episode of top gear and the toms hanks and arnie shows . 1000 times better than zoe ball
