Perhaps my favourite composer. He just has that wonderful, wonderful touch, so rich and resonant, whether he's playing or composing.

James is talented has written some big hits, but this is my favorite. When I hear "Pretty Woman", I hear this song.

This is not actually a very original arrangement only the bridge part. He borrowed the main melody from Bruce Springsteen's Racing In The Street

JNH writes such delicate melodies, this piece is actually a great piece for warmup on the piano, this and Water for Elephants are two of his greatest scores in my opinion.

This sums up the love in the “he sleeps” scene in Pretty Woman, for me a very special and watchable film still after 30 odd years. Sublime listening, thank you James ❤️❤️❤️

And to think that he composed this amazing music even BEFORE the movie was even finished! WOW.

That's a very common thing. Composer start writting for a film before it's finish (and sometimes even shot). For Once upon a time in america (from Sergio Leone, music by Ennio Morricone), the music was composed entirely before the movie was shot and the music was used during filming to set the tone for the actors.

@@Kupperdurden I mean, it happens a fair bit, but relatively infrequently especially currently in Hollywood. A lot of that comes from trust being established over time with a director they frequently collaborate on, who trusts the composer enough to do that sort of thing. Saving Private Ryan is a good example of that, Harry Potter 1, Inception. Though there are a few cases where nothing was shot to score to for the composer, but the deadline wasn’t going to move back for the composer so they have to write whatever they can regardless. Star Trek the Motion Picture comes to mind. But the more common scenario is that the composer will receive some cut, probably very rough, of the film to start working from. The advent of virtual instrument sounds/digital audio workstations also hugely shifted the way things work, so composers can do a more or less realistic mock-up for the director/producers ahead of the scoring session, so less is left to chance. Studios want to control or guide the creative process every step of the way these days.

JNH is an amazing pianist, similar to John Williams he got his start arranging and playing piano on film scores for other composers before being offered their first scoring jobs. Funny thing is JNH and John Williams both played piano and keyboard on Jerry Goldsmith scores, specifically Studs Lonigan in 1960 where John Williams played the Piano parts of the score and Twilight Zone the Movie 1981 where JNH helped arrange the song Nights are Forever and also played the Keyboards with Mike Lange with Goldsmith conducting.

Does anyone know where we can purchase this arrangement?

Yes, James Newton Howard is an awesome composer......but he didnt write this particular piece, he only arranged it for the movie. This theme comes from a rock song and he adapted it beautifully.
