Jimmy Stewart was not just an actor. He was a real-life American hero. A skilled pilot, he refused special treatment as a celebrity to fly combat missions deep into occupied Europe in WWII, in B-17s and B-24s. Despite trying to keep a low profile during his service, he retired as a Major General in 1968 with a slew of medals for his heroism in combat. He even flew in a B-52 as an observer on a combat mission over Vietnam in 1966. Jimmy Stewart was a great man.

@@ArsPraestigium , you are obviously deeply ignorant of American history and the Red Scare and the Hollywood Blacklist, when production studios hewed to a politically correct dictate created by right wing power brokers and racists. Today there is far more creativity and artistic and speech freedoms than existed for more than the first 60 years of filmmaking. Tuned out? You sound tuned out. A single U.S. film can easily take in more revenue than the combined revenue of all the films produced by any other single country in a year. Americans are perhaps the heaviest consumers of screen media entertainment in the world and probably well over 90% of the content they consume is, for better or worse, domestically produced. “Hollywood” has never been more powerful and people have never been more rapt by what it produces.

@@ralphadamo1857 , “younger days”? You’re off by a few decades and you make it sound as though his use of LSD was somehow illicit. In fact, Grant was administered LSD therapeutically when he was a middle age man undergoing psychotherapy. LSD was not illegal, and it was administered by psychiatrists as a therapeutic psychotropic to assist in the psychotherapeutic process. Many doctors and their patients found it very useful and effective. LSD is now being seriously studied again as a potential therapeutic psychotropic. I would not be surprised to see it used again in medical settings within the next decade or two.

Because yes, there are great actors nowadays which can match the greatness of the guys from the Golden Age (like you said, DDL, but also, imo, Nicholson, De Niro, Hoffman and Pacino). What I should have said is, that that there were way, way more great actors back in the day than now Because back in the day, there were like 30 great actors (and the same amount of actresses), and only a handful nowadays can match them.
