Mg5 taxi driver here I can confirm everything he said is spot on. I clean and protect everything on mine so mines is in perfect condition as it was the day it drove out the show room. Top tip buy lanoguard and seal everything on the bottom and around the bonnet holes and charge port and you will not get any rust at all.

As others have said- videos like this are exactly what are needed to disprove all the ridiculous lies and cr@p that are spewed out on other channels and educate the non ev owners that ev's are not scary! My 71 plate MG5 has just hit 33800 miles and I can honestly say it's the best car I have owned and suits my needs perfectly. It's reliable & trouble free and just works. The only thing I've had to do is change the front tyres (they both got damaged). Brake pads are like new, no rattles or squeeks- I'll take a careful look at the charge flap now, but so far no problems. I am seriously thinking this car could be a long term "keeper". Your updates and my experience are only reinforcing that idea.

Hi James, greetings from Oxford. Always great to see your content. There is so much FUD out there about BEVs, tyres being just part of this. I went BEV in 2019 with a BMW i3, the factory Bridgestones made it to 37k miles, I replaced them with Continentals, which are much quieter and have more tread depth. My i3 has been faultless too, apart from a couple of annoying interior rattles which I hope to sort the summer (glove box mech and drivers door card). When I drive an ICE car now they feel so ‘old’, unresponsive, noisy, just old tech. By choice I would not go back to an ICE car now, certainly as a daily driver.

What a workhorse! And I love the unicorn. My e-Niro has developed a similar fault with the charge flap. Sometimes it doesn't unlock and takes locking/unlocking several times to get it working. Apparently that's a known issue with the actuator(?) so I'll be getting Kia to sort it under warranty. (Hence why I didn't ask Lee to look at it the other day when he did our service!)

Good report... nothing to say! Your vlog on the MG ZS which included 'muddy puddles' helped persuade my wife to get one and we love it. Don't do big mileage and the rapid charging can be slooow in cool weather but the ease of driving and quiet on the long journeys we have made make it a fantastic buy. I too spotted the cheap 51 kW MG5s and whilst I don't need another car that battery chemistry should do even better on degradation. You might like to compare that some time!

I was ‘comparing notes’ with Smithy the other week when he came to service the e-expert van. Now has 82,000 miles on it. Repair bills are one set of front tyres at 56,000, a light bulb and sets of wipers (one set snapped off on an icy morning). Smithy measured the rear tyres at 3-4mm tread remaining! Faultless. Battery SOH checked at 90% but think that is taken from total capacity which gives the EV database usable value if 68kwh’s and that is what my charger shows it puts in too.

Our MG5 died after going through a very small amount of water (like, a few inches). The dealer charged £300 to repair it (they 'dried it out', put on an a new 12V battery and reflashed a bunch of ECUs that had faults which wouldn't clear). With that and ongoing issues with the infotainment (CarPlay being broken, radio crashing and rebooting) and MG UK's utter disdain for their customers, we traded it in for an e-C4 after just over 3 years. Much happier not being an MG customer.

Would be interesting if the same EV drivers having issues are the ones that basically do a burnout every green light. Also any car needs basic maintenance. Checking tyre pressures, fluids, a good clean especially over winter and the saltiness. Go on any other MG video and the comments all say chinese crap. It is like a reflex for some. MGs just do the job. So yes these videos are very useful.

This is exactly the type of real-world, open and honest video that disproves all the BS that does the rounds on mainstream media outlets. More to the point, your cars live a much harder life than the vast majority of EV's will ever get from ordinary owners doing 12,000m a year. So realistically, someone could buy a new MG5 and know it will easily last them 10 years. I reckon the majority of car owners keep a car for less than half that long. I'm curious ....... at some point you will have to replace this and the other white high mileage MG5 you own. Is that decision going to be made only when the cost of replacing stuff becomes an issue? I'll be very interested to see what mileage they've covered when that time arrives. My guess is approaching 250,000m.
@Jamesandkate3 ай бұрын
Hi. I think realistically we'll replace them before that. We've talked about it at 150/175, because ultimately they are starting to get knocked about and they are customer facing vehicles. Nothing set in stone as yet, but for now, it'll keep plodding on.
@capnkirk55284 ай бұрын
If I could buy one of these used in Canada I would do so TOMORROW. THIS is what we need (at a reasonable price), not a Tesla or A Ford filled to the brim with "premium content" (that I don't need and 95% of the time won't use). I did notice how challenged the owner was MANUALLY OPENING the doors and the liftgate (/s). Also, I once owned a (very fast) muscle car where I burned through a set on normal all-season radials in about 10k miles (but they were fun!). For those who say tires don't last on an EV, check above. I suspect that THESE are driven sensibly (my boss / customer at my last contract bough a Model 3; came in every morning with a shit-eating grin from the acceleration - but that does have a cost ...).

New BYD cars come with an 8 year unlimited milage warrantee even as a taxi !! If the vehicle has done less than 100,000 miles at 8 years, the battery wranntee is extended until the car has done 100,000 miles!

wow, that ZS is very reassuring! Had mine 3.5 years and only got 22k on the clock so I have many, many years of driving that ahead of me! These EVs are all very well, but you miss out on the real thrill of driving. Driving is all about experiencing the unknown, in a petrol or diesel car (of which I've had many over the years), every time you drive them you experience the exhilarating thrill of 'breakdown anxiety'.. literally any of about 100 moving parts could fail causing catastrophic failure at any moment. Then you've got the art of financing them - it's a real skill to manage a budget with an ICE car - you absolutely know that something is going to go wrong, sooner rather than later and you know it's going to hit your pocket - hard. Then, of course you've got range anxiety... most people talk about range anxiety with EVs, but over the last 5 years, all of my local petrol stations have been knocked down - most are Starbucks, or Tesco's Local now, so ICE drivers have to go further afield to find one. Unlike EV's you don't have multiple chargers on every street like here in London, and you certainly cant get petrol from a lamppost.. it's a real thrill to be able to negotiate the ever decreasing landscape of diminishing petrol stations whilst maintaining moral superiority over EV drivers! Plus real Petrol Heads have the following: 1. Who doesent love breathing in copious amounts of Diesel/Petrol fumes every few days? 2. Who doesent love waiting for an old lady to finish her shopping in the petrol station supermarket before you can pay? 3. Imagination and fantasising are essential routines for a healthy mind - ICE drivers exercise those functions when they come up with ever more preposterous claims about EV's.. ICE drivers can be proud that there are at least some pollutants (minimal though they are) that are made when producing the electricity for EV's to mitigate their guilt of driving a polluting ICE car. I suppose this is analogous to comparing people who defecate on the street, to people who defecate in a toilet - both have an element of waste, so who cares where the waste is dumped... right??

Certainly. SAIC, who own MG, make VW's on licence in China so have access to their older parts, so often use VW switch gear and other bits in their cars.

Makes sense!. I drive an MG Marvel (same wheel) "Norway" and keep hearing the wheel is from VW, been trying to see if I have seen the wheel in another vw, so far no luck 😉.

Please DO keep bleating on about how well they are lasting. As has been said by many a person on multiple occasions. It’s the body which will fail long before the rest of the running gear; as you’ve shown to be the case here.

Don't watch it then? Plenty of people are interested in what this channel has to say.

Thank you James for a great video 👍 do you think the mk2 mg5 is a big improvement over the mk1 ?
@Jamesandkate4 ай бұрын
Hi Peter. I do, and for a family I'd definitely take the MK2. However, for a vehicle were going to work hard, I'd take the MK1.

@@Jamesandkate thank you James . I drove the MG5 about 2 years ago I was really impressed by it the only thing I didn’t like was the old fashion grill 🤣🤣 . Take care & don’t work to hard .peter

This is great info, I havent looked at your content before so sorry if this is covered, but could you say something about how this car has been charged during its life?

Hi. Charged at home to 100% 5 days a week on AC, rapid charged most days too.

Hello. I Was wondering. Those miles covered in your work vehicles. What combination of charging are you doing. Mostly DC when out and about. Just interested in the HV SOH% and how it's been charged.

Hi. Charged at home to 100% daily and then rapid charged daily on most days. I couldn't give an accurate split of each, but mine has been rapid charged 311 times

Am thinking of buying one of these second hand, is it an easy process to check the SOH prior to purchase to get an idea of how well it's been looked after via something similar to LeafSpy?

Quick question regarding the break fluid, did just not replace it? For my 2022 ZS EV the service requires changing every 48000 km or two years.. also the suggest to change the engine oil at 80k km, what do you think of this? Cheers from the continent!
@Jamesandkate4 ай бұрын
We check it for moisture content and it's been fine, so we have left it. EV brakes work less then ICE car brakes and aren't subjected to the same temperature changes. Manufactures want to make money from you and will tell you how important the fluid change is. The reality is, it's very robust and if the water content is ok and the peddle feels ok under foot, you can leave it. However, manufactures specify this for warranty so be careful. We employ Teslas view on this. Change it when required.

@@Jamesandkate thanks for the prompt and competent reply. Yes, I'll plan to have the break fluid changed for the warranty. Good night!
