About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.
Come see the city & subscribe to our channel :)

Ok, guys. You did it. You made me cry. Are you happy? Cos I am. You can´t imagine how emotional this video is for us. Thank you so much for upload it. As you know, we´ve visited Limited to One last december (Thursday 5th, to be precise) and Kristian was an amazing host, he was so kind and patient with these argentinian characters trying to soak up everything in just one visit, we share the same passion for vinyl and music in general and we treasure each record we bought there (a 45" of The Specials pressed in 1979 for $8! I still can´t believe it). Every time we play them is like an imaginary trip to our beloved East Side. We have been in touch since then hoping the pandemic wouldn´t harm his business, because we know how much love he puts in it. We are extremely glad to see the store is open and as beutiful as we remember it. It´s hard to explain (add to the equation that my English is not so good, sorry for that) but knowing that you and Kristian met, that you could show everybody his amazing and cozy store, made us so, so happy. It's like when you introduce some friends that don't know each other and they 'click', it´s like being closer, like having more things in common. So...we love when these kind of things happen, even more if you are thousands and thousands miles away. It felt like we were there with you, petting Hudson while you crate dig over Kristian´s unbelievable collection, showing each other what we found...you know, that things you do with friends that share the same passion and just have fun in a place that makes you feel at home. All of my youth I´ve hung out in small independent record stores here in Buenos Aires, I´ve made good friends that are still around, learnt about music and spent whole afternoons after school traveling with my imagination, hoping that some day I´d be able to visit places like the CBGB, walk the same streets my 'heroes' walked in the East Village, Lower East Side and all over Manhattan. And I did it, I´ve been there last december...and when I opened Limited to One´s door, I was that 16 years old boy again. Limited to One is a time machine to your happiest moments in life. So, if everything you do is EXTRA GOOD, this time it´s been EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA GOOD. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Stay safe and healthy, send our love to Hudson and add another spot to visit together as soon as we can go back to NY: Bye, guys.

Christian Donatti it is so wonderful to hear that you really enjoyed watching our video highlighting Limited to One and that it brought back such fantastic memories of spending time there shopping for vinyl. It is hard to believe in many ways that so much has changed in the world in less than 1 year and are glad this video connected us to you and that you felt that you were right there walking around the store with us looking at the vinyl. It is amazing to make friends with you without even having met but that is exactly what has happened. We are sending extra extra love to you in Argentina and big kisses from Hudson and look forward to being able to show you more of our amazing city and it’s unique and special shops.

Back in the 80s and into the early 2000s before I moved out of NYC for good, I used to visit many record shots down there. Some don't exist anymore and there are a few that have appeared since I left. I do remember Bleecker Bob's as extremely overpriced and the old guy being a rude piece of shit. In 1981 The Rolling Stones released a single from their album "Tattoo You" called "Waiting For A Friend". At most record shops midtown, in the larger chains, they sold the single with a plain sleeve, but the picture sleeve was available at other places. This guy posted it as "RARE! $50" - A week later I found the picture sleeve in quantity, at a few record shops in Queens, while this scumbag was still selling it for $50. George Harrison "Teardrops" German import with a sleeve for $40 .... His records were not that rare - at least in the Rock section, I don't know about Jazz - and they were terribly overpriced. I don't know how that piece of shit survived for so long.

People traded off sound quality for size with CD's & MP3's. Depending upon your cartridge/stylus, vinyl destroys CD's.

@@JamesandKarla I watch and enjoy your videos. If walking down McDougal St. towards Bleeker, what was the name of the Greek Gyro place on the left hand side of the corner? I can't for the life of me remember the name. A place named Chloe is there now. He had the best gyro's in red sauce. I can't find info anywhere. Maybe you can help me.

mafatone thank you so much for the love on our videos! We too cannot remember the gyro place’s name. The business which was at the corner of MacDougal and Bleecker prior to the “by Chloe” vegetarian place was a wine bar named Ciao which was there from at least 2009-2013.
