It's time for the human egg drop challenge - it's like the egg drops challenge where you have to protect an egg from being dropped, but with a crash test dummy! I challenged @KidsInventStuff to build something to protect our human egg from being dropped from a crane.
I built a tensegrity structure out of wood, ratchet straps, and 3D prints. Kids Invent Stuff built a structure of bamboo and rubber with toilet plungers. We used my crash test dummy, just like in Mythbusters, to see which structure would allow a human to survive.

Just an FYI most bungee cords are actually adjustable if you look at the ends the hook turns into a spiral and the bungee cord is usually not actually attached to the hook it's just stuck through the end of the spiral and then a crimp or a knot is added to the end that cannot escape the spiral so you can push the end of the cord into the hook exposing it and then you can change the length of the bungee which will change its tension and then simply add a new knot or add a new crimp

You have very long thin beams that will fail by buckling. Ideal geometry is a cylinder, such as aluminium tubing. You can also use extra straps to constrain the beam at it's centre, which will half its effective length and quadruple the critical buckling load. Ideal setup would be something like 50x3mm alu tubing with 40x3mm tubing inside. 3D print some end caps and wrap with teflon or UHMWPE for low friction. Use shock cord to support the 40mm tube so that each beam becomes a giant pogo stick. I'd also replace all the straps with shock cord. Just keep adding strands until you get the right rigidity. To constrain the middle (or even the 1/3 or 1/4 points) of each beam, you'd probably be better off with the ratchet straps. Great vid and great idea!

On second thoughts, a larger diameter and thinner wall thickness would be better. Have to do some calcs and also keep it under the weight limit of the boom

When you climbed onto it and started to bounce on it a bit I had the suspicion that the wood will break. Afterwards exactly that happened when you dropped it. I think your construction puts very high loads (like insanely high) onto the individual wood pieces. But I am not too sure since this is just a feeling I have and not a deeper mathematical understanding I have from the construction.

I think if I did it in a similar way again I'd tie bungees to the ends of the straps.
@Pluap

In addition, the ratchet straps probably have quite a bit of tensile strength so they do not absorb too much deformation themselves

This is exactly what I did for the Egg Drop thing in my science class in high school. The teacher said he'd never seen anything like it before. My egg broke though lol. We weren't allowed nearly enough materials to make it effective enough to protect the egg. It was a long ass drop too. I'm glad that my I saw this so I know that at least my design concept was sound. That's a win for 17 year old me lol.

the ups of being in a renovation of your house is you find back stuff... you didn't know you lost! sometimes in mysterious ways when the guys had to breach a wall to get to the toilet and shower plumbing we found a moldy VHS tape cassette with no writing on it. behind an antique mahogany cabinet, we found our long-lost real natural rubber plunger lost for at least 30 years the rubber had turned to stone!! it will no longer plunge instead it just is!

When you put a seat and dummy, then, it is no longer a tensegrity structure. The dummy and seat produced a bend in the wood and hence broke it. Instead of distributing all forces in tension and compression.

I think you're onto something with the lumber grade thing. I don't know about the UK, but where I live, construction lumber used for joists, headers, and rafters comes in various grades depending on how much transverse load they can take, but there's also a "studs" grade which pretty much means it's rated for axial loads only, and in practice the lumber available in that grade is always smaller sizes like 2x4 (common for load bearing walls) or 2x3 (common for partition walls). especially if they have it a direct to consumer sort of store and they're pre-cut to typical wall height, it's usually studs grade.

You should try a rigid hexagon frames that's all connected by flexible stretch material, and don't use wood, use something with light with a high flex value that's durable. Same stuff they used to mage tenders off for a while comes to mind, but that stuff is heavy. Then inside that huge ball you add a survival ball with soft insides, though the whole thing is connected on all side by something stretchable, but strong so that the inner ball will move, but the further from center the harder the pull from the opposite side. Add a big parachute and and you might have something that could possibly fall from a high height while being safe. After all the point is to avoid that high G spike on the charts as the whole thing hit's the ground. I think if it's done right it might work, but you might need to vary the size of the outer hexagon or whatever. The outer structure might nood even have to be solidly connected and be connected through the same strong screech stuff. I can almost see it in my mind, like some rescue ball dropping from the edge of space.

Okay I know nothing about engineering or maths, or eggs for that matter but! One of the most basic things your learn in Parkour is that when you drop from a great height and make contact with the ground, you need to redirect the momentum away from the ground to lessen the impact on the legs and spine. That's why you roll. So that's probably very dumb, but how about a system of springs? or something of the like that would allow the machine to not drop straight down but instead bounce and roll on impact? That may be silly but that's the first thing I thought of.
