Do trials riders need super long stems? Long VS short test.

Some of the set-ups trials riders are on these days look comical. Is there a benefit to super long stems and rolled forward bars?
I did a test to see how much of a difference riding a comp set-up makes to my riding.
I'm 5'8"/ 172cm tall. I'm riding a short clean x3, and the 2 stems I'm comparing are the trial-tech 120x15 and the Crewkerz 135x15.
1.5cm makes a huge difference!
Which do you think made me ride better?
What is your riding set-up? Height, frame size, and stem/bar length?
Overall, I feel that back wheel endurance and moves to front are better with the long stem, but jumps to rear and general flick-ability is better with the short stem.

Bloody awesome! Great work. I’ve been wondering about this for awhile now.

Consider the distance of the handlebars to the bb regardless of stem length. Basically what Lee McCormack does with the RAD#. Imagine if your stem was 3’ long… you wouldnt be able to do anything. There is a window within the bb to bars measurement that will allow for maximum control over the bike.

Every thing looked better on the shorter stem.

I was gifted a comp trials bike recently and am struggling to get on the back wheel. I feel that I am way too stretched out right now to get my weight far enough back. I was thinking of a shorter stem to help. Will try it out when the snow clears a bit in Ottawa

I honestly think it depends on how you ride. You have a very old school riding style (same as me) so shorter feels better because you're always on the move.

Doing more street trials I started going short stem for barspins and foot jam tailwhips which I much prefer the shorter but that makes everything else harder. For some reason I feel like your style wants a shorter stem lol

Totally! On my street bike I run a 50mm. I’m excited to ride it again once all the snow is gone from the roads.

Short, easy call. Frame reach comes into it as well. Fit is more important than a giant lever at the front. For someone a few inches taller, the longer stem might be just right.

Might need time with the longer stem to grow accustomed to it.

Im riding the X3 with the stock stem and handlebar, and while i've been riding 150mm stems for years, i've never had one paired with the super high rise bars. Tilting the handlebars forwards as intended makes them feel like they are too far up my body when im on the back wheel. Pretty comfy for staying on the backwheel, but i feel i can't get any power at all for static up to back moves. Definitely thinking on trying a shorter stem. I do not like having the handlebars at eye level lol

I do a bit of trials on an old giant stp with a 70mm stem, I brought a giant trials team mk3 with a long low stem setup a few years back and just really hated it, it not really even that extreme but much prefer a bike that still feels like a bike. I know it’s not as capable but I just enjoy riding my stp more than a comp style bike

Thank you for an interesting comparison. What stem would you recommend for a short rider (165 cm tall)? I've got 20" comp trials bike with the following specs: wheelbase 1008, BB Rise 90, chainstay 350, headtube angle 72°, headtube length 120, high rise bars, 145 x 25 degree stem.

I’m not sure. I haven’t ridden a 20” enough to make a recommendation. I want to ride a 20 though! I need more time, money, and space haha!

I think 120mm is still fairly long, plenty long enough if you ask me! Should be lighter and stiffer too

Your arms don’t look long enough to get full range of motion on the long stem
