Hi James, I just started. 4 weeks in. I’m in obese range. I’m doing very little exercise. 5 minute stretching 3x per week. Working my way up by walking. I’ve cut out daily alcohol…4 drinks. And avoiding processed foods/moderate amount of food between 10-6. About 95 percent consistent on this diet change. Not tracking. I’m down 16 pounds in 30 days. I’m now moving to more activity. FYI…my belly measurement has not changed more than a half an inch. For me, I am focused on changing my habits and creating new habits. My goal for April is losing 10 pounds.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER!!! (Please Read) I am not advocating this as a weight loss strategy for others. This is for informational/research purposes only, testing the metabolic adaptations that might occur on an extreme calorie deficit (emphasis on extreme). This is not intended to be weight loss advice. Although there are some interesting takeaways from this experiment, there are many unanswered questions that require further testing. Please see the description for other important details that might help answer any questions or concerns. On a separate note, I’ve had quite a few people ask about the shake I was drinking. You can find the macro profiles here :www.amazon.com/stores/Undersun/Nutrition/page/8BEBA0AE-793A-4060-8840-516235999424 I helped formulate this to provide a balance of both macro and micro nutrients.

$400 is a bit on the steep side. Also, you were doing an extreme version, but do you think doing 3 a day and cutting out 2 meals would have a similar accelerated affect? Say 1700 calories instead of 1100?

@@JonathanAldrich82 Yes, 1,100 is definitely extreme. You will get results on 1,700 kcal/day - probably not as fast initially but certainly better for you. Honestly, even 1,700 calories is extremely low. This sounds crazy but the only reason I would recommend it to someone is knowing that they would probably be off on their calorie tracking by at least 300+ calories, so that 1,700 would probably be 2,000+ in all likelihood.

I found this interesting! So I decided to try it to see how a woman would fair doing it. I started Feb. 11 and finished Mar. 9. First few days was rough, not eating any food. But the first thing I noticed was I didn’t get a single headache. So continued. I couldn’t do more than 4 shakes a day though. So my caloric deficit was more than 30%. But the shakes were filling! In my greater than 3 weeks I noticed: sustained energy, less bloating, and doing the bands 3-4 times a week I did notice slimming down some. I only came down 11lbs but it was a great jump start. I did feel great. And it taught me portion control and that only 15 min resistance bands is not only doable but helps make a difference! So I stepped down to at least 1 shake a day to replace a meal and will continue to do the bands. I have long way to go weight wise but over time will get there. I’ve done it before. Thank you James for making these shakes! I think they’re the best I’ve ever tried. I just request other flavors also 😄. I always stay tuned to new workouts from you and Annik. Thank you both for all you do!

100%. Weight loss in theory is much simpler than many experts make it out to be. It's just a matter of energy balance - total expenditure (TDEE) versus intake. Where it gets hard is actual application like you said. I'm working on a program now to address this - trying to simplify the process, and make it easier to follow.

Travis what I have learned over many, many years in trying to get fully defined six pack abs. Genetics. The fact is, we all lose body fat differently. In my case, it comes off my face, then arms, then legs, then abs and finally lower back. What that means to me is, my face will be sunken in to such an extent to negatively impact my looks. I am currently leaning out using a keto diet and have lost 8lbs in only 10 days. I can get maybe 2 or 4 pack and my obliques looks great. That's as good as it gets for me unless I want to look emaciated. Just understand that some people lose fat in their abs much quicker than others. It all depends on genetics.

It's amazing how large the range was in body fat estimates from the different sources at the beginning of the experiment. From James' skinfold caliper measure of 10.5% (looks too low) to the Aria scale measure of 25.5% (absurd). The Dexa scan (16%) is the gold standard, but the closest to (my) subjective eye test estimation would probably be the InBody Analysis of 13.6%.

Most scales that measure body composition have a setting called Athlete Mode (or something like that) and it will use a different calculation if that mode is set. On my Withings scale it says that I should use Athlete mode if I train for more than 8 hours a week and my resting heart rate is below 60bpm. That drops my 23% body fat to around 12% when I use that mode.

@Bernie Gannon I think I fall somewhere in the middle to be fair. With any metrics I use them as a guide and look to improve. I'm doing this, but with protein shakes....I can tell you the hardest part is sitting down with my wife and kids for dinner. I was more curious about my strength loss in gym, which I can feel a slight difference but think its still in the adjustment period. I'm on day 9
@JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
You’re probably going to feel the decline in energy (strength) pretty quickly if you’re only doing protein shakes. Your average protein shake only has a few grams of carbs, very little if any fiber, low fats and typically no vitamin/mineral blend. With that being said, you’re going to deplete your glycogen stores quickly (probably after first 3 days) so that’s where you’re going to feel that drop in strength. You’re also going to drop probably 6+ pounds of water in that time due to the drop in glycogen stores (glycogen holds 3x’s it’s weight in water). Glucose is the primary source of fuel when doing high intensity exercise, which is what resistance training is. You’re using ATP for only the first few reps and then you’re body starts shifting toward being glycolytic. With low glycogen stores it’s going to impact your strength if you’re doing any kind of volume greater than 4-5 reps in your sets

@James Grage my first shake of the day is a scoop of "greens" with cup of frozen strawberries and banana to help with all that. The rest of the shakes are just the whey protein powder and water. Great video! Metabolism slowdown is overblown myth, I was on a diet for 10 months and went down 35kg. Horrified that I may have ruined my metabolism I did RMR and Dexa, and to my surprise I even had an RMR bit higher than standard for my height and weight! Doctor at the clinic attributed that to consistent weight lifting during my diet. As long as one eats enough protein and does consistent resistance excercise...it's not an issue. And most of us aren't pro athletes to worry about minute details and micro loss of lean mass.
@JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
I agree. When someone's BMR drops, due to a drop in total body mass, it typically drops to the appropriate level for that new weight. There may be cases when it takes a dip below predictive calculations but there's no reason why it wouldn't normalize if one stays consistent with eating at their new maintenance level. The honest truth of why people don't care for that idea is it simply means that at a lighter weight, their caloric requirements are lower, and they don't need to eat as much food.
@Moi_81
@Moi_81 Жыл бұрын
No it is a thing. My rmr bottomed to 1000 calories which was way too slow for my weight, height, and age. You recover via reverse dieting. This is a proven fact and you should checkout Layne Morton's series on it.

@@Moi_81 What is your normal RMR? Unless you did absolute starvation mode and lost most of your muscle, did absolute mental crash dieting...I don't see this happening. You need basic energy to sustain your brain and your body, if it drops so much then you were in a coma pretty much. RMR is energy need at total rest, laying down in fasting state, bare minimum to sustain normal body activities. We are talking extreme case here, most people are not honest with themselves (including myself) about their actual calorie intake and needs.

Wow, that's almost 7 pounds per week. That's very aggressive. 1-2 pounds a week is generally considered the safe range. What I did was 3+ which I was able to get away with very short term but it is honestly very extreme and not the best longterm strategy. Generally speaking, slow and steady wins the race. The slower you lose the weight the less chance of adverse effects to your metabolism. It's also important to keep that protein high to help preserve lean muscle mass, which is going to help protect our BMR, and help with longterm fat loss.

@JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
Hey Chuck. So most of the electronic style body fat testing is usually going to be pretty inaccurate. The high-end Inbody machine like the one there at Nova is a different story but that's also probably a $20,000 machine. The best advice I can give is that the actual bodyfat percentage doesn't need to be accurate as long as it's consistent, for the sake of monitoring progress. With any kind of electrical impedance testing water is going to be your big variable. Try to do your testing at the same time everyday, and try to keep water intake consistent otherwise your results can fluctuate dramatically

I would liked to see this experiment with someone who hasn't trained like you and doesnt have the muscle mass.. i expect completely different results. A lot of people who i know who have tried something like that lost weight (thats thermodynamics for you) but their muscle mass got blitzed! Resistance/weight training is a known fact to be far better at helping you lose weight and keep or better muscle... cardio wouldnt do that at all. Excellent points on eating... high protein low carb is always good bet... perhaps you can do another video by swapping this around and do one on adding muscle..?
@JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
Hey my friend, appreciate the great feedback. I do agree with you that the results are definitely going to vary from person to person, especially taking into consideration starting LBM and BF%. Based on the most current research it appears that the best approach for most people is still going to be hard resistance training + higher protein diet + mild/moderate calorie restriction...but, that's nothing new. Bodybuilders figured that out decades ago. I personally don't do a low-carb per se but I do focus on glycemic load with good quality lower glycemic sources to keep blood sugar more even throughout the day. This works best for me, but generally speaking, the research indicates that when both calories and protein are equated the results between low-carb and low-fat are the same. There's a great meta-analysis on this. I'll put that into some future content

I’m currently paralleling this with some major differences. I’m on semaglutide, which has radically cut my food intake. I’m simply ..not hungry. The weight has been melting off. The one caveat with the whole situation however is that I’m on what most would consider a high dose of HRT, running around 1500ng/dl total. In my experience so far without the anti-catabolic protection essentially being provided by the testosterone I would not recommend this. With the two combined though the results have been amazing. I’m doing a 3 day pretty intense lifting plan with 1-2 days off. No additional cardio, but I do have an outdoor field job and I move around all day. And btw, super awesome content my man. I don’t see anyone else presenting information like this. Very well done sir!

You’re 100% right. Without the hormonal support it can be difficult to maintain lean muscle while in a deficit. Hard training and high protein can help but if you’re really dieting hard you’re doing to lose some muscle - the question then becomes is it actual lean muscle (ie: loss of muscle proteins/catabolism) or is it just loss of lean body mass, lost in water weight, as a byproduct of maybe carbs being really low in the deficit

Great video James - very interesting watch. I feel like this is likely because you have a lot of muscle, you were still resistance training, consuming protein, and the fact that it has only been 3 weeks. If it was longer, I am certain you'll lose lean mass. Stating the obvious, but it was also an N=1 experiment, so genetics, training age, current use or previous use of PEDS/testosterone - all of this has to be taken into account.
@JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam. I would agree with that. I think the big question is not necessarily "how long until you lose muscle" because to your point LBM and fat mass are major factors. I think BF% is probably one of the bigger cues. If you've got more bodyfat, less chance of losing muscle. If you're really lean then there's a much higher chance. I do believe that the faster you try and drop fat there's also a greater chance of losing more muscle.

Great video. I used to be overweight myself and always felt sluggish, sleepy and tired all the time, so I decided to lose fat as fast as possible. I started going to the gym 5x a week and did cardio 2x a week (1x HIIT and 1x Steady state) and followed a high protein, high fat, low carb diet. I gave 100% dedication. Within 8 months, I had lost 66 lbs (30 kg). It was tough and it wasn’t easy being strict with the diet, but I’m happy I did it. It also requires a lot of mental strength. Losing fat and keeping it of is incredibly easy if you know what you’re doing 🙂

@@JamesGrage Agreed, many people fail because they don’t have the mental strength. They try a diet for 1 week and quit because they “didn’t like the taste / texture of the food” or it made them “feel bad” or they didn’t see results after 1 week 😅 Then say “it didn’t work for me”. It takes time for your body to adapt to a diet. When I first started a high fat - low carb diet, I felt like sh*t the first 2/3 weeks, but I pushed through and started getting great results fast. Happy I did it.

People will actually claim to eat nothing, do a ton of exercise and still gain weight because of genetics or some "glandular problem", then act attacked if you try to explain that it's physically impossible. If you can create an energy balance deficit, either through food intake, exercise expenditure or ideally a combination of both, the weight will come off. Anyone who says that caloric deficits don't work for them, it's only because they thought they were in a deficit but they really weren't. Most people inadvertently underestimate their intake and overestimate their activity.

The way I read it is using the Dexa scan a total loss of 17# with 6# of fat loss and 11# of water loss. Of course muscle is mostly water. Realize that 6# of fat is a huge amount especially on a already trim body. Three weeks after this diet, James continued to lose 2.15 pounds of fat while gaining 5 pounds of water/muscle. This data was from the impedance test. We didn’t see the Dexa scan data.

Also he does bring up fiber. If u tried to follow this Similair diet with no food(which isn’t that great of an idea as he says) you need to increase the fiber somehow. With no solid foods make sure you try to hit at LEAST 30 grams (males and females have different requirements and most people in GENERAL with their diet don’t get enough fiber as it is (like he said… fiber increases satiety so you won’t feel as hungry if u increase fiber intake so just make sure u focus on fiber everyone!)

Appreciate the awesome feedback. Yes, I'm a big believer in fiber, especially considering that about 95% of the population in the US does not get nearly enough fiber in their diet. There is a much higher awareness now for gut health but the average person has no idea how important it is. I think that will be the next big health & fitness fad. You'll hear more and more people talking about the microbiome and the potential effects on the production of serotonin, immune function, nervous system, etc, etc

I'm a short 40 yo guy, 5'6" and the formula says that my maintenance calories are 1700 daily. If I did five shakes like you did, I would be 700 kcal down. I've done that in the past with good adherence and minimal weight loss. I think I would have to cut one shake to lower the total calories to see some results. That would still leave me with 80 grams of protein at the end of the day. I weigh 158 lb but I'm about 20% fat now. I've gained muscle by lifting six days a week and consuming between 80 to 100 g of protein every day. I think I'm going to give your method a try with a 14/10 fasting window to see what happens. @JamesGrage
@JamesGrage Жыл бұрын
So your average protein powder is mostly just protein with very little fats and/or carbohydrates. If someone were to do a diet similar to what I did they would want to use a “meal replacement” style shake as opposed to a basic protein shake. A meal shakes is going to have a balance of all macronutrients (protein/carbs/fats), ideally a good amount of fiber as well as micronutrients (vitamins/minerals). You could theoretically get enough calories in a day with just protein but you would end up with a lot of deficiencies.

Hi Peter. Not sure if you watched the full video but out of the 16 lbs there was almost no loss of actual skeletal muscle, only a drop in LBM due to a drop in water (from glycogen depletion). Now I’m certainly not advocating this as a strategy for anyone else. This was for experimental purposes only and an extreme approach to test what kind of metabolic adaptations would occur.

Interesting .... so roughly 2000 calorie a day deficit for 21 days or 42,000 calories / 3800 CPBF = 11.1 (ish) pounds. So yeah, that's very impressive, though I doubt most people would stay on it for a few days before wiping out. I think you actually reduced your BF% 6% +/- as opposed to 3, but I could be running the numbers wrong somewhere. Shows what can be done if you're motivated ... good channel, subscribed!
