James Gurney takes a Jeep Wrangler on a test drive, then sets up his easel on a sidewalk to paint a Jeep Renegade. The car is parked up on a ramp, so Gurney paints it as if it's jumping while being driven off-road on a stunt trail. He explains his painting technique, showing how he starts with a traditional sighting grid, like those used by Durer and other old masters, and then lays in the watercolor and gouache transparently and then opaquely until he has a complete painting finished in about an hour and a half before sunset.

James, I agree with the the 3.2K people who gave you a thumbs up (01/15/20) and don't understand the 24 who went the other way. Those who paint with light, as you do. bring so much more to their art, elevating the mundane (in this case a car) to something sublime and frankly, delicious in its own way.

When you're driving one of these cars you're not just driving the car, you're driving the dream behind the car. Loved that quote... I love seeing you paint and explain what you do, because it's enjoyable and also because smoetimes you do soemthing that just looks RIGHT and then you mention it in a word or two why you do it (like the raised values, the warmth of the side mirror etc., next to the flare) and my brain just goes BOOM! Realizing rather obvious visual correlations like this makes me feel stupid, but atleast I'm learning, lol :)

Another fantastic video James! Thanks so much. Every time I watch one of your videos I get a new idea, learn a new technique or how to solve a problem I've been having. My big takeaway this time around was your grid system. I was just in the woods last night wishing I had something like that. By the time I got to laying down the details with the gouache it was so dark under the forest canopy I could hardly see what I was doing. Wasted too much time sketching. Going to have to build one of those grids. Thanks again James. Best wishes.

The prob with water colour is how to lighten dark areas if you over do it. I use wall paint you could say it's not pure water colour but you can get some interesting affects.
