There was widespread jubilation in Pakistan when neighbouring Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, in August 2021. Many, including the then Prime Minister, Imran Khan, expected that it would herald a new era of Pakistani influence over the new regime, which the important military and security establishment in Islamabad had nurtured for many decades. However, such hopes have remained unrealised.
In recent months there’s been a growing wave of attacks in Pakistan by Tehrik-e Taliban - otherwise known as the TTP or the Pakistani Taliban. However, while Islamabad may have hoped that the Taliban regime in neighbouring Afghanistan would help to control its Pakistani partners, it has seemingly done little to control them. Meanwhile, having reasserted control in Kabul, tensions appear to be emerging between the Taliban and Pakistan in other ways. For example, there have been renewed questions over the border between the two countries, the Durand Line, which was drawn up by British colonial authorities in Imperial India. This divided the Pashtun people, who make up most of the Taliban, and has been a lingering source of resentment. This all suggests that relations may now become increasingly difficult between Pakistan and its former partners.

The growing tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban is fascinating in so many ways. Having nurtured the group, Islamabad no doubt hoped it would be able to control it once they retook control in Afghanistan. But it doesn't seem to be working out as planned. However, it's the historical dimensions of the issue that makes it particularly interesting. So, do you think there is a serious conflict in the making? And will we see the Taliban in Afghanistan make a serious claim on the border? Thoughts and comments below. Also, please do take a look at World Politics Review. Afghanistan is in Central Asia, not South Asia! The British Empire tried to promote Afghanistan as a part of South Asia to incorporate it into the British Raj back in the colonial days! Afghanistan is a part of the Iranian Plateau which is in Central and West Asia. Also, the Pashto language is not just related to Iranian, it is Iranian! Farsi is the most dominant Iranian language, but not the only Iranian language. Other languages that are Iranian include Kurdish, Balochi, etcetera. Also, Pashtuns are culturally and ethnically Iranian - along with the rest of Afghanistan's population.

@@selwyncaspar8067 Typical Western colonial "divide and conquer" narrative. Being Iranian pertains to language, culture, history and ethnicity, not religion. Most Arabs in Iraq are Shia but that does not make them Iranian. Similarly, the Kurds in Iraq are Sunni but that does not make them Arabs. Kurds are Iranian. They speak an Iranian language, have an Iranian culture and have historically always been a part of Iranian history. The exact same can be said of Pashtuns and Baloch.

Exactly - the then PAK P.M. Imran Khan was smug & even saying that the Afghans had 'broken the shackles of slavery'! They didn't like it one bit that the previous Afghan govt's were close to India - so did everything covertly to undermine them & the Americans that helped the Taliban return to power in Aug 2021. Today they are getting their 'just desserts' for all this that they did! In addition when they keep on secretly nurturing & financing disparate terrorist groups, it is no surprise that PAK has now lost control over most of them that even former P.M. Imran Khan tried to negotiate with one of them & had to even free their leader from prison!

It was very exhausting for India maintaining relations with Pakistan . One side we had to go for peace talks when Pakistan was sending and still sending highly trained terrorists into India(Pakistan military trains these terrorists) and our soldiers dying while defending our country. Once we stopped talking we are much better now. But trade was still going between our countries. But Pakistan stopped the trade completely so its their fault. They bought medicines, agri produce, tyres etc from India. They will let their people suffer just for their religion and Kashmir which they can never win from India. Their military officers and politicians are billionaires in UK and US with dual citizenships. Their population is highly radicalized and illiterate. Those who are educated and sensible leave the country to settle outside. And most interesting thing is here is that Pakistani pashtuns have the most anti-taliban sentiment as they suffered from taliban attacks a lot than many other provinces and also faced discrimination from other ethnicities as during the early terrorism wave in Pakistan (2008-2014)pakistan taliban(TTP)was made up of majority radicalized pakistani pashtuns and afghan taliban.

This topic is quite personally important to me too because when I was a university student, I organised a forum about the Taliban in Afghanistan with a local expert, Dr. Ahmad El-Muhammady (expert in counterterrorism from the International Islamic University of Malaysia). In the forum, there was a lot of optimism that the Taliban may bring Afghanistan to a new positive era given the Taliban’s commitment at the time. Eventually, we can already see a lot of changes which were not expected but strained relationships between the Afghan Taliban and Pakistan is something I least expected! Great video as always! Thanks for highlighting some important topics professor, both the reoccurring issues surrounding the TTP and the recent pivot of the Afghan Taliban away from Pakistan. After listening to journalist Shekhar Gupta talk about this many times on his KZfaq series over the last 4 or 5 years, I’m fully convinced that, as you intimated, there are an incredible amount of nuances, most of which I’m surely still unaware of, in the continually changing relationships and interplay of the Subcontinent states. I find it absolutely fascinating, honestly you could probably make dozens of videos for this channel on just Subcontinent-related issues. Thanks again for the video!

This is the result of peace loving country.. At independence in 1947, Hindus composed 20.5 percent of the population of the areas that now form Pakistan. In the following decades, the percentage shrank rapidly, and by 1998 - the last government census to classify people by religion - Hindus were just 1.6 percent of Pakistan's population.15-Oct-2020

Pakistan may have to eventually let the "border region" go, the big question is what does the Pakistan Taliban want ? I have heard it said by observers that they want Pakistan to adhere to a much stricter version of Sharia. , If that is indeed the case, it could actually trigger the fragmentation of Pakistan.

Because they do have their fingers dipped in everything. I wouldn't be surprised if CIA sends some help to TPP to ensure Pakistan fights them while at the same time sends weapons to pakistan to help them fight.

Both Pakistan and Afghanistan should be Included in the "Middle-East". Just look at their Problems. It looks like an Extension of an Average Usual Middle-Eastern Conflicts.

@@gouthamsudheer2080 Don't include Afghanistan into your British colonial rule. Afghanistan fought and won against the invading British armies meanwhile Pakistan is a creation and submitted to the British.

Why did the USSR invade though? Were they afraid Central Asian nations would be radicalised? Or was it purely to consolidate power in that region?

The USSR-friendly communist regime in Afghanistan was at risk of falling as its leader was assassinated in 1979. The Soviets invaded to prop up the regime and preserve their influence in the country

10:55 Only Pakistan openly seen return of Taliban as victory and in many Afghans did peaceful protests against it and Pakistan (army) which I have seen. Ironically now Afghan and Pak forces are in armed conflict due to border dispute as Pakistan started to fence the border not allowing Pashtuns to move freely on to either sides.
