Dragon Quest is the longest running Japanese RPG ever. There's 11 games in the franchise and a ton of spin-offs and remakes. You would think it would be simple to follow, like Final Fantasy, with each game being basically closed off story-wise... BUT, no, each Dragon Quest game has so many connections to other games in the series that it gets pretty confusing, pretty fast. Chronologically confusing that is!! So, today I'm diving in and giving you a run down of the games in their timeline order. Oh, a bit about why it's called Dragon Warrior in America too... well, for a while anyway. Special thanks to sackchief for helping me with researching and editing!

I love Dragon Quest so much. I played DQ8 back in 2017 and I love it so much. I loved the series so much that a Hero from one of the games was my most wanted character in Smash, and then... they came into Smash! I’ve played through the Demo of DQ11 on Switch and I loved it. I really need to get the full game.

My friend put it in an interesting way: they're like fairytales. That's why some have similar worlds and stuff. And you can factor the remakes that way: what was once a spoken folk story gets written by a new author adding twists and sprinkling a bit of their own on it.

@@verguco6051 not sure how all the Zelda games contradict previous games. DQ is massively popular here in Japan, it's akin to the popularity of Disney films or something like that. The slime is an instantly recognizable symbol. There are even DQ branded convenience stores that play sound effects from the games when you enter and leave which is especially cool. Personally, it's one of my favorite game series ever and I never really concerned myself with their chronology, they're just simple and fun RPGs that I can go back to anytime.

@@panagiotischristo That's not true. He did explain a lot of how they connect, but also that the remakes makes the timeline confusing and illogical. He concludes that the timeline isn't essential to enjoy the games, the message being that you don't need to worry too much about it. That's not wasting time, it's informative and fun. Very much so if you never really played any of the games (which seemed to be James' situation going into this).

11 poses an interesting idea about the splits. Zenithian is codependent on erdrick happening. However a third potential timeline could occur if eleven chooses not to go back in time and now neither has a broken sword of light or the title of erdrick, (things that both timelines depend on). so potentially 12 could be either a prequel to 11, a continuation of either timeline, or the start of a third timeline.

I remember trying to figure out the Dragon Quest timeline. I made a thread about it on dragon's den a long time ago. I think there is generally a timeline. Probably not super planed out, but when you look at the games, most have different worlds like a light world, a dark world, or a dream realm. So you could say that a game may be a future or past version of one of the worlds used in another game. The DQ builders is clearly an off shoot to the timelines, sort of a what if sort of game. I think the creators have a vague idea of how the most of the main games connect but they don't sweat it out too much and mostly include references to past games for fun. If you want, you can play any of the games standalone, but if you want you can pick them apart and connect everything together as long as you are okay with selectively ignoring some references and things.

Dragon Warrior VII is one of my all time favorites though oh boy is that a long game. 100 hours can be spent on it easily (for just the main story).
