Splatterhouse was originally an arcade game released in 1988. It was developed and published by Namco (makers of Pac-Man). In this video James Rolfe and Mike Matei try out the home port of Spallterhouse on the TurboGrafx-16 (released in 1990). Splatterhouse is a side-scroller, where you play as a character named Rick, who has the appearance of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. You travel through levels fighting monsters with weapons such as a shotgun. There were other Splatterhouse games released later such as Splatterhouse 2 and 3 for Sega Genesis. And a reboot simply titled "Splatterhouse" in 2010 for Xbox360 & PS3.

How does the guy with chainsaw arms refuel his chainsaws? Or pull the cord to start them? Who put the bag on his head? He can't take it off, maybe that's why he's so pissed. I'd like to hear the full story on this guy.

No it's because James is tapping the button instead of holding it down. You would think he'd know, so many games back then had a half jump if you quickly tap the button, you only need to hold it for about half a second and you jump properly. Jesus these are hard to watch sometime.
@SavageMontreal

That part is NOT easy. The jumping in the Splatterhouse games is terrible, and that section is probably the most frustrating part.

If you haven't, you should check out the arcade version of Splatterhouse. The TurboGrafx version is actually pretty heavily censored to remove even more gore, if you can believe it. Also if you all ever want to try this again later, you can do a sliding kick by jumping and pressing down and attack just before landing. It helps to get those enemies that hit you before you can get close to them.

this was one of my favorite games as a kid! Also, there's a lot more to the story than "you look like jason and kill monsters and stuff" it's got a classic yer car broke down in a storm start, you find a house and go inside to get out of the weather, then you and your girl are knocked out, when ya wake yer stuck with a cursed mask on yer face and girlfriend is missing! Now you have to make your way through the house which is full of abominations made by some mad scientist, who was killed by his own creations, to try to save your girl and remove the cursed mask. SPOILER : part way through the game you find out it's too late to save your girlfriend, she is turned by the monsters and becomes a badass monster herself you now have to defeat! This game had a pretty decent story in my opinion to go along with the awesome graphics for the late 80's early 90's and a great sound track that kept 8 year old me creeped out at night.

I agree with Mike, I'll take a wired controller over a battery one. I actually really like PS3's controller (Not sure if the PS4 does the same thing). The rechargeable battery in it that all you have to do is plug it into the system for awhile and let it recharge from time to time and you're set.

Both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers have available dock chargers for the rechargeable battery packs. What I've done is get two battery packs for my Xbox 360, and when one is low, I just switch it for the fresh one sitting on the dock. They each charge in only two hours, and last 35. A $40 investment, and well worth it if you hate constantly having to buy AA batteries for about $1 per battery.
@KitsyX
@KitsyX 10 жыл бұрын
doctor345678 That's still potentially $40 more than just getting 2 dual shock 3s (Assuming the battery pack is charged in a controller... Although reading it again, it may be that you charge the pack separately...in that case it's the same price as getting two DS3 controllers, roughly, so you've still got an extra controller...). The controllers seem to be roughly the same price, but you get the batteries built in with the PS3 controllers... It'd be better if they just made the 360 and Wii ones the same way, with batteries built in... Worst comes to worst, you can USB the controller while you wait for it to charge, assuming you don't need to sit too far from it... At least you can guarantee you'll be able to pause or whatever, if that's an issue. I wish my 360 controllers worked like that... There might be other issues with the internal batteries though... Not sure how easy it would be to replace them... They seem to last pretty well though, although I don't think they last anywhere near as long as 35 hours of playtime in one go, that might make the purchase worth it... Then again, for my PS3 I just use normal 6-axis controllers and swapping them out has never been much of a problem... Ah well, for now I'm doing ok with 6 rechargeable Duracell batteries and a four battery charger... Plus I have a wired 360 controller if I need it... With my set-up wired is generally better, but in a busy living area, having wires can be hazardous... lol My PS2 fell down a few times, I'm surprised it lasted so long... Still, it'd be good to have a wired option... Wii kinda has gamecube controller options, but that only works with limited games v_v Plugging the pro controller into the Wiimote is weird too lol Ah well, most people are probably better off with rechargeable batteries since they are generally way cheaper, multi-purpose and replacing individual batteries is probably easier than replacing a power pack that goes wrong, although I wouldn't expect that to come up much and changing the batteries is more annoying... Ah well, I say if we have to go wireless then the PS3/4 controller design is probably the better one (in terms of battery usage I mean, if nothing else... I prefer the layout of the Playstation style controllers, but that's a personal thing really, it'll obviously vary from person to person). Sorry I get carried away >_> I didn't mean to aim much of this directly at you specifically, it just kinda happened lol. That set-up sounds pretty neat, but if only you didn't have to buy it as an extra >_

Wired controllers are always better. Wireless always has a delay, even if it's just 0.01 second. In some games, specially fight competitions, this makes the difference of winning or losing. Why do you think all fighting sticks come wired? :P
@TXFDA
@TXFDA 10 жыл бұрын
People always complain about the short controller cords on older game consoles. But you have to think in the mindset of when the thing first came out. TVs weren't very big, and the picture quality wasn't great. So right off the bat, you were usually sitting closer to the tv, which means closer to the system. On top of that, kids that usually got the systems... a lot of times they're not gonna want to get up and down over and over to change a game, so they sit near the console. So at the time, cords didn't NEED to be longer. They didn't really expect people to be playing on big screen HDTVs from the other side of the room when they made the console.

This game was one of my favorites as a kid!!! You are right about Rick looking exactly like Jason Vorhees. The arcade AND japanese version (pc engine) had the actual white hockey mask, which was removed in the american version. Also, the reason James couldn't hop over the spike balls was because he had turbo switched on the hop button. And bringing both shotguns to the chainsaw guy is the only reasonable way to beat him. Just gotta get the timing down of all the enemies on that stage. The next stage is WAY harder than the one you left off on.

it's still obnoxious having your game console take up more than one electrical outlet. you could count the TV, though since that's also used for other stuff (or at least it was) it doesn't really count.

ProtoMario and every time I see how much shit they have plugged in I feel worried about electrical fires. regardless, THEY might have more outlets than average, but my house only has like four electrical outlets. when you have to plug shit into the light fixtures you start worrying about how many outlets are being used by every single device you buy.

If you use quick saves in a game like this, it kinda ruins the challenge though. This is true for most arcades. A better option is to lower the difficulty level. This is possible at least in all(?) arcades on MAME at least.

+Sly Cooper Just watched a video about it what the video says makes sense. The guy says it was probably because of hardware limitations, some of the gore wasn't in the game. It makes sense because a lot of background/foreground stuff like mutilated bodies were no in the console version.

NEC America didn't know how to market the console. In Japan they focused on marketing in large cities. While America does have large cities it's not as urban as Japan. A lot of the population still lives in suburbs or rural areas.

With you and James being big Castlevania fans and all that, maybe you should try Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth on WiiWare. It's old-school style so it's right up your alley. Or maybe Castlevania Judgement on Wii. I so want to hear you and James give banter on what is considered one of the worst games in the entire franchise.

About the controller cord length. That's a Japanese thing. The Famicom and Super Famicom had exactly the same problem, and presumably the Sega Consoles did as well. For some reason, Japan assumed that you didn't need a controller length longer than four feet, but my guess is that it has to do with the size of Japanese homes. They assumed that you'd be seated close enough to the TV anyway. *shrug* I guess someone at NEC didn't do any market research of the North American video game market.
