I give a tour of my apartment located in Astoria, Queens of New York City. I pay $1,460 a month for my affordable space (at least for NYC). Electricity, utilities and Wi-Fi are covered with my monthly rent. I also share the pros and cons of living in my apartment.

Btw I enjoyed this video. I think you are the first American I have heard say "washroom" which is common in Canada. I remember one year I was at a Miami restaurant for Art Basel. I normally call it "bathroom" when I cross the border. I asked a server where the washrooms were in error. She gave me this look like I had landed from Mars and replied "what's that?". I have worked in many tourist areas in Toronto and never once flinched when a European tourist asked me where the "toilets" were. I always went out of my way to be gracious to tourists who visited my city.

Thank you! Yeah, I guess there are a number of names for "washroom." I definitely call it a "bathroom" as well, but I never really thought about the cultural differences in regards to the term.

Have you considered going to the NYC Housing Connect website and applying for brand new apartment buildings? If you create a profile and apply to as many lotteries as possible there's a high chance that you will be contacted. That's how I got my apartment. I'm still getting contacted even though I live in a brand new building. I've been living here since 2021 and my rent is a little bit more than $1,500 a month for one bedroom apartment in the Bronx. Again, it is newly constructed. It is income based and it is rent controlled.

The first time I visited NYC I found it loud, dirty, and too big. I found New Yorkers abrasive. I was much younger then. Since then I have fallen in love with New York a bit more each visit. Once I got past the directness of New Yorkers I realized how kind and genuine they are. Countless times New Yorkers have gone out of their way to help me (even without my request). The rich arts scene and energy in NYC are so unique. Btw Andrew I was starting to think you didn't read fiction. I was impressed you had a copy of OUT. I worked at a bookstore for almost 10 years and that was a "staff pick "of mine. My book club enjoyed it, but I had one angry customer (who I had recommended it to) come back and say it was very dark and violent. 😬Oops - I guess my dark Korean sensibilities overlooked those details. If you haven't already I recommend you read some Haruki Murakami.
@Jamesnu
@Jamesnu 20 күн бұрын
I love fiction books! I always try to vary my reading selection though to keep it interesting. Yeah, OUT was a pretty intense book, but I liked it! Yep, I've read Murakami, but I definitely have to read more of his works. I have the longest list of books to read. Haha!

Very cool idea to make a video like this, I am very minimalist and live similarly. I just can't seem to get anything less than $1600 a month in Staten Island. Do you and your roommates pay $1460 each or is that the total for all of you?
@Jamesnu
@Jamesnu Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, it's just so expensive out there. Me and my roommates each pay different amounts each month based on our room size. My one roommate, who has the largest room with his own bathroom, pays the most. While my other roommate, whose room is smaller than mine, pays $100 less than me.
