Another great review James, I have the quicksilver sl5 on a previous recommendation by your good self, can’t fault it in anyway, just need to sort some carbon wheels, I’m running 32mm Pirelli cinturato velo’s, they feel great but I’m sure be even better with a set of carbon wheels. Keep up the good work 👍
@JamesSocialCycling

Cheers Daz. Yes I recon the wheels have made a lot of difference but the carbon frame does soften the ride out over the ally version. I can’t fault the Mavics but my Cosmics are 2016 version so before the takeover. I’d like to think they are still made the same way though. Good luck on finding a set, try Cycle Exchange, they always have some deals on and offer a 3 months warranty on all their used products. www.cycleexchange.co.uk/collections/wheels/products/cube-itening-c62-black-edition-2017-56cm

Thanks for the review James. We seem to be similar in build so I can recommend the Selle SLR Superflow Boost. No issues in 5+ hour rides. I use that saddle on both my Specialized Roubaix and my Felt Broam 30 gravel bike. Another change I made was to narrower handlebars...really helped for comfort. Be well.
@JamesSocialCycling

The Selle does get good feedback, maybe I’ll bite the bullet and get me one as do have the same Bontrager saddle on the topper and that was awful off road😆 Am thinking 40 bars, but will wait till next spring now.Thanks again Jim😊👍

@@JamesSocialCycling just to let you know, this Selle isn't their "holy crap that's more expensive than my bike range." Fairly reasonable. I went with the narrower width after seeing some YT bike fitters recommendations.

I have the same bike (SLR9) and agree with you on the praxis BB. I replaced it with the ceramic speed and there is a tremendous difference in pedaling smoothness. Awesome bike. Spec'd mine very light 14.7lbs. Perelli zero race tires with TPUs. Wheel spin up is very fast. Overall a very fast, very fun and responsive bike

Thanks for the comment. SLR9 is an awesome machine, would be wasted for me and my power output 😁 This is. It the first time I’ve had issues with a Praxis BB but will be the last. Glad you like the Pirelli set up as well, Zero Race won’t last 2 minutes with my lump reason I’ve got the next best thing. Appreciate you dropping by😊👍

1200 miles already shows how much you like it I reckon! That freehub noise though - sounds like a very angry wasp! Great looking bike - I always reckon Trek do the best looking paint jobs, and your bike is a prime example - great stuff James!

That bike is a right quality bad boy James 👍 For me, I have to decide if I’m going to trust a brand like Trek which has decades of experience in the industry or a Chinese upstart with no track record.

If it wasn’t for the T47 threaded BB I wouldn’t either. Lucky for me at present I’ve only had issues with the Praxis BB and front brake adjustment. I’ll have this looked at properly when the SL5 starts it’s hibernation when the weather changes 😁 The biggest let down has to be the LBS I purchased it from. They could have done more to help with BB but didn’t sadly. Problem with Chinese brands are getting more and more expensive and now you can pick up left over 105 groupsets for around 5/400 but will you get on with the frame… I was lucky I was transitioning from the Emonda to an Emonda. It’s difficult but I think you need to pick a budget and go with value for money. Lots of Chinese frame reviews on YT now so hopefully you’ll make a good choice. 😊👍

Good video and review James. The sl5 with upgraded wheels is good enough to win any road race. Mine was 8.5kg with upgraded wheels and carbon seatpost . Not super light but it’s very fast and snappy The stock bars though all have a long reach of 100mm which is crazy . I swapped mine out . My other bike is nearly a kilo lighter but just doesn’t role as fast even with the same wheelset
@JamesSocialCycling

Thank you for the feedback😊 Glad you’re enjoying your SL5 and yes, heavy, but just doesn’t feel it when you ride. Some are saying it’s better to ride the ALR but unless they’ve made some major changes since the 2019/20 ALR5 that was a kilo lighter than my SL5 but was no way as quick. I think it’s quite under estimated, but if you know you know😉🤫 Thanks again mate😊👍

@@JamesSocialCycling I had the AlR too , the previous generation with rim brakes . Great bike too in purple flip , but felt the carbon sl5 just feels more planted especially with the discs . The braking is really good . Be interesting to see if the new emonda will be any better again

Great review. I currently ride an old aly Giant Defy but looking to upgrade, been looking at endurance bikes but I live on Exmoor "hill country" do you feel this bike would be suitable?? Thanks
@JamesSocialCycling
@JamesSocialCycling Ай бұрын
The Defy Ali was a nice bike, owned one for a little while, though I’m no good with multiple road bikes as I ride the bike I love riding and at the time I owned the Emonda Ali alr5, which for me was a better ride, but then 5/6 years newer😊 Then I upgraded to the SL5 Emonda and had to sell the alr5, again I was never going to ride it as the Emonda SL5 was just chalk and cheese, as mention the benefits in this video. If you decide to go for the Emonda you won’t be disappointed I can promise you that and it will be a good hill rider too, but the geometry of the SL5 is a lot different from the Defy so make sure you try it out or even sit on it. Hope that helps😊👍

What size is this frame? And what is your height? Currently looking to buy a used one but so confused with the geometry. I am 177 cm - 5’7”, i usually rode a downsize bike with a humongous stem (48) or a normal sized one (51). But on trek sizing, i am suggested to ride a 56 on emonda sl.

I’m 185cm and frame 58. I went by Trek sizing chart and works for me. This is the second Emonda, purchased a alr5 in early 2020😊👍

I bought the Emonda ALR 5 2022 last year and I was in fought if should have gone for the SL5 instead, which is higher cost, around 50% more (that was my main issue). But if I had watched your video but the time I would have decided by the SL5 :-) … Anyway, everything ok with the ALR 5 but since I only ride outdoors on Sundays I struggle climbing because it comes with 11-30 cassette, and I have not upgraded anything yet. I am thinking in changing the cassette to 11-32 or 11-34 which involves also changing the the rear derailleur to a mid cage, but I am still not sure that it is just me that need to get fitter instead of the lacking of easier gears. The problem is that I avoid going to harder climbs because I may not been able to ride them with the current gears.
@JamesSocialCycling
@JamesSocialCycling 9 ай бұрын
Glad you’re enjoying the ALR5, lovely bike. I changed mine to 11/34 to help me with the climbs. What’s to say you change yours and keep the 11/30 and small rear mech and when you’re fitter you have the choice to change back if you fancy it. The SL5 is awesome though, but I still enjoyed the ALR5. Thanks for dropping by appreciate the comment.😊👍

Firstly contact your retailer or online dealer. The first time I took it back to the LBS and they told me it had not be fully tightened from factory fit. To be very honest with you if you get it sorted and it’s still shite look to upgrade the BB for something a lot better. I’ve since chucked out the Praxis and now have no issues with the Bottom Bracket. I even had new bearings replaced and it was still shite. But before spending out use your warranty to try to get it sorted, never know might end up good and cost you less😉 Keep me informed how you get on Darren😊👍
