My biggest issue with first aid beauty is how they keep reformulating their products but they formulate then worse...like adding in fragrance ingredients but still claim fragrance free and sensitive friendly. For their ultra repair serum, the reduced the amount of some beneficial ingredients and then got rid of some all together; ie. it doesn't contain peptides anymore! So why should I pay the same price for lacking reformulations? No thank you!

OMG!! So glad you talked about the biosance brand trip. That really pissed me off. I totally agree with all the reasons you gave. They said the purpose of the trip was to launch their 'new' plant derived squalane? And also to plant coral to help save the reefs...whilst flying the majority of infliencers from halfway around the word....ironic much? Do they know how long it takes for coral to grow? And also if existing coral is dying due to increased ocean temps and pollution what makes them think that the newly planted coral will thrive in these conditions? You are the only person I have seen speak out about this and makes me ❤️ you more!

Smaller indie brands like Krave, Stratia, MaeLove, etc are so much better about releasing fewer, consistently high-quality products. As soon as a brand is purchased by investors the ONLY motive is profit and they start cranking out a slew of "decent" products. I'm not on the I-Hate-Capitalism Train, but crap like this makes me fully understand why capitalism gets so much criticism these days.

@@JamesWelsh it's almost as if they get you hooked with a really good product, make lots of money, a bigger company buys them out, the head of companies steps down, and then all those wonderful ingredients just dwindling it smaller and smaller. I see celebs pouring thousands into their looks, but if you zoom in on a candid you can still see blemishes and texture and "imperfections" etc. If they can't get perfect skin, I sure as hell can't. Plus in this economy with these rent hikes? Girl no. I have a standby cleanser and moisturizer I can use any time, an oil cleaner for waterproof makeup that doesn't require cotton rounds or wipes, and a toner. I have cheap little serums that I like but I'm not going to freak out if I don't have them. I have a script for tretinoin. I am just gonna try my best with that and use spf. I can't justify buying a lot of skincare or makeup or extra gadgets and things right now, but the especially optional stuff like a new serum or whatever is too trivial rn. It doesn't matter if it literally gives me the face of a baby again, if it's more than like 14 bucks I'm not going for it. The rush to always have new products and "collections" and trying new things is so wasteful and the all this excess has to go somewhere, the landfills and the ocean and now in our bloodstream. Micro plastics are found in Antarctica now too. It's really too much. I would rather have some texture and laugh lines and not have plastic in my blood, you feel me?

So fun fact, Lush (FKA Cosmetics To Go) did formulation for The Body Shop for a few products initially. The relationship sullied from my understanding, but The Body Shop kept a few formulas and the tea tree line is apparently very close to formulas Lush founders helped create. However, Lush is also a fairly shady brand (having worked for them) and are very ethically dubious beyond their perceived good will.

Lush is one of them brands I used to love. It’s very targeted to young kids and teens with the colourful bath bombs but whenever I go in there I’m disappointed and they keep putting there prices up and up! I swear there prices are increasing by a couple of pound each year. I used to love there mask of magniminty and it was 6.95 for the small tub which lasted me ages. Last time I was in there it was 9.95 now I think online it’s saying it’s over 10 pound. Bath Bombs are about 8 pound now for a fizzing ball you use once. Also the staff used to be lovely and come up to you and show you products and things, now you walk in there and you are ignored completely. The music is far too loud and there’s hardly anyone in.

I used to LOVE Kiehl's. It was the first skincare brand I tried, based on a friend's recommendation. I tried 1 or 2 products and really saw a difference in my skin and continued to use them religiously for the next 4 years. A different friend of mine introduced me to a few K beauty brands during the pandemic and I was shocked to find products that were significantly better for WAY less money. And it turned out some of the products their staff recommended for my sensitive, dry, rosacea prone skin were making all of that worse! So happy I found you in 2020 and started purchasing your recommendations.

My skin all of a sudden started reacting to everything that I had already been using. Products with actives and without. My skin got so red, burned, swelled up and ended up peeling. I went on a hunt looking for clean, no fragrance, made for sensitive skin products. I finally found the Aveeno Calm and Restore Cream. I warily bought the mini, and had no negative reaction, it really did sooth and reduce the redness overnight. Although, I do have to say, I do not have Rosacea (a chronic condition) mine was for lack of better terminology, allergic reactions. So, I ran out and bought the full size , the serum and the pumpkin mask. Haven't tried the serum or mask yet. So I don't want to recommend those yet. But I also used some snail mucin gel and sheet masks prior to the cream to facilitate the healing. My skin has 95% recovered. I do like Kiehls, but only the Avocado eye cream and the new Overnight Squalene Mask. I was not impressed with the day Facial cream. I tested the Biossance Omega cream and couldn't stand the smell, so that was a no for me. I do like the Biossance Squalene Oil, but I prefer the Drunk Elephant Marula Oil better. Too bad, because the Biossance Oil is a better value. But gonna continue to bite the bullet and repurchase the Drunk Elephant. In saying that my skin type: Mature, extremely dry, dehydrated, extremely sensitive reactive skin.

@@ajsitrick I got the same thing. The Snail mucin gel in the bottle and the jar. But I still top it off with the Aveeno Calm and Restore Cream to hold in the moisture. It's good for every skin type. And even though it offers moisture, its not enough for me. I only use the Aveeno Calm and Restore to calm and heal my reactive skin. It really does work. But then I go back to the Kiehls Overnight mask for intense moisture. It doesn't irritate my skin but it's VERY rich, probably not good for oily skin. But I did try the Aveeno Serum and Soothing Pumpkin mask. No reaction. I'll probably save the serum as a irritation treatment but I think I'm going to continue to use the mask weekly.

I worked at The Body Shop here in the US in the late 90s, back when they still did (what I thought of as in my teens) socially-conscious campaigns and products. I really loved some of their hair and body products back then which have been discontinued for decades now. I would still use their Mango body butter and occasionally buy a small tub at Ulta if it’s on sale but I miss the original, more oil-based formula that you had to kind of keep in the refrigerator or it would liquefy. Best in the dry winter, awesome for after sun skin care. The White Musk scent came out when I was working there and to all of our surprise was such a hit that they created a whole line out of it. Everyone in my store absolutely hated it and we dreaded having to make products with the perfume oil (this was back when they still made customized products) because we would then smell like it all day. My favorite fragrance of theirs was Dewberry which I think I saw at their shop when I was in Scotland a few years ago, but it didn’t really smell the same to me as the one discontinued in the 90s. I also used one of their Tea Tree products often and was sad to find several years ago that the formulation changed. But I agree with you-even back when I worked there it felt like Bath and Body Works for the artsy, alternative girls (which fit me just fine lol). I think their ethical stance on trade, manufacturing, etc, was fairly solid in the 90s but I feel that our standards as consumers have changed quite a bit since then. While they were once kind of cutting-edge for their stance and practices in the 90s, those policies don’t even make the bare minimum requirement for people who are looking for ethical skin care products in 2022.

I do still use + love their products, they just work extremely well for my very dry, acne-prone skin and I don’t have the wallet to trial and error with products elsewhere. But I liked the brand itself a heck of a lot more when their approach was eco-friendly+science, before it deep dove into militant clean beauty EWG “you’re gonna get cancers from chemicals” type bullcrap

But I really have to stretch it out that little bottle for months and they are making it hard for me to justify repurchasing them. $50 here in the US to buy their eye cream. *Thank you for pointing out that The Body Shop are green washing!* I've been saying that for years and I can't believe how they are still seen as a "green" company. Just a few examples of shit they do/have done: 1. They used plastic micro beads in their scrubs, even after we were all made aware of how bad it is. 2. They still use liquid plastics in their products. 3. All their packaging is plastic. They even changed out their metal hand cream tubes for plastic. 4. They use a lot of palm oil. Their soaps are primarily palm oil, even the olive one. 5. They are yet to release a packaging free line.

Some of this is incorrect, plastic micro beads aren’t used in any of the scrubs and some ranges use glass packaging as well as refill stations to refill certain ranges in aluminium bottles. I had no idea that The Body Shop was doing the MLM thing, ugh. Any time a company resorts to that style of marketing, that just tells me that their products are probably not worth it. MLMs rely on this social pressure people feel to support their friend's "small business" (which is not really their business, but they believe it is). I've never bought anything from an MLM rep that I actually would have purchased anyway, it was out of feeling obligated to be supportive. I’ve had private school students transfer in and try to spend embarrassing amounts of money either directly for me or for equipment for my classroom and I’ve turned it all down. In all fairness to teachers who DO get many expensive gifts and donations, as long as it doesn’t sway how they do their grading, then I don’t see the problem. I'm guilty of using The Body Shop products as daily skincare 😬 It was the first actual "skincare" brand I used after Simple (I was a late bloomer for skincare) and I used their Vitamin E cream cleanser, toner and SPF30 for months and I actually quite liked them a lot, my skin reacted so nicely to them. I also felt quite fancy because they were the most expensive skincare I'd ever bought. It all went downhill when I tried one of their new moisturisers and it burnt my face, and tried their cleansing butter and it seems to break me out every time I use it. I now don't use any of their products for my face but I do continue to use their yoghurts and scrubs for my body because they work for me. The issue with the brand is they're definitely overpriced for what they are, they feel quite novelty and they seem to pump out new products all the time and love to discontinue perfectly good products at a constant rate. The smell is also insane, I don't want that strong of a scent on my face. They're just not up to date with modern skincare and everything they release seems like something brands released about two years ago.

I totally hate the "clean" stuff with biossance too (and other brands), especially when they started adding in essential oils which irritate my skin. I haven't heard about that brand trip either. It sounds confusing and pointless. All that being said, I do still buy 2 things from them. The eye gel is great, it actually makes a visible difference for my eyes. Nothing can get rid of genetic dark undereyes, but it does brighten up my undereyes and provide plumping but it is light for under makeup. I really like that it actually has a lasting improvement and not just a caffeine or mica cream that doesn't make any lasting effect. So I stopped using the eye gel after a year of using it because my undereyes looked great. Then a few months later I started seeing more darkening again, so I realized it was actually doing something. I've been buying it since. I also have really been enjoying the copper peptide serum. It's nice to use and more affordable than buying a separate hyaluronic acid serum and copper peptide serum. I really like that they are combined and I've been enjoying it and feel like it does help with skin plumping.

I can't get anywhere near EOs, even on my body. Artificial fragrance is actually ok most of the time for me too, it's really mostly EOs that mess me up.

I’m enjoying the eye gel too, lovely and easy texture. I’m on the fence about the Copper serum! I find it less hydrating than my TO HA+B5 serum, BUT it hasn’t made my skin angry so not complaining yet. An FYI though, the copper serum mustn’t be layered with (most) vitamin c serums. It can be layered with an oil-soluble vitamin c, but not a traditional water-based ascorbic acid or salt form.

Wow, really bringing that 90s fire lately, first with the fa-shun vid-yo, now talking about Body Shop! That was my jam as a 90s teen wannabe hippie. Fuzzy Peach and Dewberry were my favorite scents. The parsley mint mask really helped calm my teen skin, but when they stopped making it I never went back. When my daughter had teen acne, I looked up the mask I used, and that's when I discovered the mlm part. No thanks!

Thank you so much for speaking about EWG! As a scientist, it is really frustrating to see misinformation being shared as “science”. It’s fear mongering without a proper assessment of the scientific literature and fundamentals of toxicology.

I was cringing hearing about the biossance stuff! I feel I'm quite discerning with make up brands (to the best of my limited knowledge of what's available online) but I'm not in the habit of investigating skincare brands although maybe I should be! I use a lot of biossance because my skin is outrageously reactive and it just responds really well to it.

I love to layer aloe gels under my body lotions for a little extra kick. It's like a toner for your body, it plumps everything up before you seal it in with a moisturizer.

I was obsessed with Biossance for a short while as well, their lightweight gel moisturizer was like the best moisturizer I had ever used in my life. I used it for like 2 months, then sadly I think I must’ve developed a sensitivity to one of the ingredients, (I suspect the ginger extract) because it would start stinging my face unbearably… I even tried going back to it after a couple months of using other moisturizers but nope, still stung my face. Really sad cause I LOVED it but I still use their rose lip oil which I love, but I don’t really use any of their other products anymore because started to feel a bit overpriced and I realized I kinda like my drugstore aveeno, eucerin, and neutrogena more… Now I’m not really loyal to any one brand, I just use the best products for my face regardless of brand

The same thing happened to me! I used their sunscreen for a few months and my skin became horribly sensitive. I'm still trying to get my skin back to wear it was. 😩 I can only use CeraVe wash and skin fix barrier repair gel moisturizer now. Everything else seems to sting but it's better than when I was actively using the biossance products.

First Aid Beauty sent me a big box with like $300 worth of products in it, and im literally a nobody, not trying to be anybody, so I loved them for a while because of that, and I do like a couple of their products, but a lot of them were just so-so for me, they didn't really do anything for my skin at all. I did enjoy their clarifying clay mask, and their hydrating cleanser, but thats it..

Totally agree about your choices. Paula's choice underwhelmed me. Nothing horrible, but nothing wonderful either. I'd love to hear your reviews of Maelove skincare. I have great success with their products and price point is lovely as well. Thank you! Always love your content.

I really loved the I'm from rice line, but I super agree that all their latest releases have been kind of meh. Honestly, all of the Wishtrend brands (Klairs, By Wishtrend, ELMT, I'm from) have been underwhelming me lately. Also yes, pear and beets?! Just...why? But to be fair, Glow Recipe does the same thing, they just have nicer packaging and better marketing, but that strawberry BHA serum seemed so gimmicky to me.

I guess with glow recipe at least its not the same product repackaged with different fruits as the focus. Like ig at least the strawberry AHA/BHA wasnt an existing product in their line that was just changed to have a different fruit focus.

The body shop White Musk perfume OIL 💜💜💜💜💜 I LOVE IT since 1990 E non so ora ma tanti anni fa avevano una maschera nutriente esfoliante all'avena e miele che era FANTASTICA. Aveva davvero il miele e mi lasciava la pelle morbida nutrita ed esfohliata come mai più niente . E anche la linea alla vitamina E era veramente buona.

Oh I can see you as my best friend after this video! I'm all about talking down of the brands when they stop delivering☺ I still have some hope in Biossance though, since they are local to me and their products are showing results. Hope they realize their mistake soon and cut off of the EWG affiliation.

For me, Glossier is a brand I used religiously back when it launched. I think around 2016-2017. The line was simple, small, addressed what I was looking for at the time which was a bridge between products I used as a teenager and stronger products I felt still too young at 25 to use. At the time, the line was primarily skincare with the exception of the Skin Tint. It barely counted as a color product and felt very skin forward. To me, Glossier is a classic example of a brand that didn’t grow with its original target market. It feels like 20-25 yr olds in 2016/17 grew up, and Glossier never grew up with us. Instead, they seemed to target younger and younger generations. New launches felt completely antithetical to their original persona of “skin first makeup second”. The launch fo their Play line felt like it came out of no where. I felt like if I wanted vinyl laquer lips and blue eyeliner, I would just go to MAC or another color line. I really only use Milky Jelly Cleanser anymore.
