That was a cool podcast. I don't think many of the younger kids realise where Jamie Bestwick came from, and how hard he had to work to get to where he has and stand up there and win against Mirra and other vert legends. The leap from the UK competition scene to the US scene back when he did it was absolutely massive. People say he is very serious, but i remember him from back in his UK days and he was a funny dude, always laughing and joking. He got very serious when he hit the US....he had to! You should get Paul Roberts on here for some of us old gits in the UK. Not known so much as a rider, but was a mainstay character in the 90's UK scene. I bet he would be a great guest with some funny stories to tell. I believe he still lives in the US now and is in the music scene. He was like UK's version of Steve Crandall, a great hype man and a good dude who loved promoting BMX. He deserves more credit in the history of BMX. BMX history is always good and full of good stories....and some tragic and sad ones too. Real life!

I met Jamie at an x trials in Texas. Mirra was my favorite rider and was salty about his loss in the xgames the first time to Jamie. He asked if I wanted an autograph and I said not really. He spent time talking to me and and sent me to Woodward for a week. I will never forget him and how great of a guy he really is. I don’t know if he will see this but thank you for being you.

Such a great perspective! I love hearing from pros. This answers my question I was asking myself while watching a Scotty Cranmer video showing some of his momentos and trophy's just in a sea train. And how his Dew Tour trophy was amongst the treasure trove and he remarks "This used to be so important to me." I kind of understood, but Jamie gives a bit more context to that. Even though they're different people, the meanings behind their actions are likely pretty similar. And it makes sense - you can't linger too long on any one moment without thinking about what's next. Also, these guys are very humble, even with all they've accomplished. This is a good example of humility. Very cool to see.

Fantastic podcast with a amazing rider and an awesome guy. I've only met him once, but to me he was embodiment of a BMX professional. Enthusiastic, positive, goal directed, friendly and brave. Definitely the greatest vert rider of all time. The stuff about the UCI and the Olympics bothers me though. No one knows more about this sport than Jamie, and he seems like a fantastic advocate for the riders to the UCI. I'm glad the UCI and Olympics seems to be pumping more money into a sport that has never had much. That's a very good thing. But do we really want BMX to become like gymnastics or figure skating, with sterile presentation, humorless officials, endless rules, and people losing or winning based on stupid technicalities? It was awesome to see BMX in the Olympics, but I thought the presentation and the way the contest was run was really sterile and missing some of the energy that makes this stuff so fun. Of course that's not Jamie's fault, he wasn't running the comp, but I hope the UCI doesn't suck all the life out of BMX.

I think we are going to see the impacts of the olympics coming in 2022. Local governments will start to see skateparks/Dirt Jumps as viable investments. Our local council has started to heavily invest in building and upgrading skateparks in the area since the Olympics. Watching the council meetings and cringing when they are fussing and gleefully hoping that the next champion could come from our area. (I was cringing because riders such as Steve McCann and Luke Parslow grew up riding our local trails and no one from council ever gave a fuck before. Secondly, and I mean no disrespect to the other riders , but Charlotte winning was the best thing for womens BMX. Shes the perfect poster child, being such a badass on the bike, How she handled herself, her attitude and charisma, even the way she smiled as she left the course. For the first time on the world stage young girls are going to realise that this is a sport for them too and they can be included. I bet more girls had a BMX bike under the Christmas tree this year than all other years combined. X games had their chance on womens BMX and they blew it

very interesting podcast. For my taste Jamie has always taken things a bit too seriously and was trying to hard to beat Dave or whoever. It never looked like he was having any fun and therefore I never really enjoyed watching him ride. Yes he eventually became the nr. 1 vert rider but he never had that special something that Mat or Dave had. Just my opinion. Nevertheless I have a lot of respect for his achievements and riding.
