I am so glad that Jamie told the story of how Prince let The Time have the spotlight while he stayed in the background playing. There are stories circulating about how Prince always had to outshine every performer he was on stage with. Plus there are so many footages of concerts where Prince quietly played his guitar or piano in the background while the singer was out in front. This should put an end to those false rumors.

My uncle was A PRINCE FANATIC. Prince pictures all through out his home. He always said Prince and Prince family was good friends of his. Yeah ok. He played bass and keyboards back in his day before Arthritis got his fingere. He played local bars and clubs. He was a retired Marine he lived in Minnesota. The kind of uncle he was. Quiet lovable. Give you anything you want. My uncle had what we called Santa Eyes. A twinkle. That turned you into a 9yr old. We would visit him only in the summers bcuz their winters are only FOR THE LOCALS. YOU GOTTA BE RAISED there to deal with a Minnesota winter. Anyway one year he said he wasn't feeling well. We drive from Atlanta to cold azz Minneapolis. By the time we get there Unc is in the hospital. We go there. But we can't go into his room. So many nurses and ppl standing at his door. We ask did he pass on. The nurse said no. He has a famous vistor lol. About an hour of standing outside his door. Prince comes out, white slacks, black trench coat knee length and Shades on. We dham near fainted. We were like unc you really know PRINCE. He said yeah, I know his daddy to lol I told yall he was a good friend of mine. I said yeah but you're a good friend to him to Unc. You never once used your friendship to Prince to impress or exploit. Just wow.. He passed soon after. The funeral home said he had several secret visitors. Our unc!! Always the black op marine. We never knew.

Word! I was 12 in 1979 when he got me. I was a HUGE Rick James fan at the time and had burned myself out on his latest record. My aunt had bought the Prince self-titled album at the same time, and accidentally left it a week later when she went back home. I threw it on one night with some headphones...and basically attended Rick James' funeral!😂😂 The course of my life *LITERALLY* changed by the last track. Been that way ever since.

I have three favs on the other side of that ”Soft and Wet” joint 1. ”For You” (the A capella album title intro) 2. ”In Love” 3. ”My Love is Forever” But shit, if you aske me, all them joints on that album was hitting! ”Just As Long As We’re Together ” was another fav too. ”I’m Yours” was a sign of the Prince to come. It was the only Heavy lead guitar song with a metal solo on the album. If you listen to the second album Prince, the song ”Bambi” sounds a lot like it but I believe ”Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad” was the try follow up to his Rock side and the segue to everything Prince afterwards.

I get it. my wife and I were torn up when the news broke. we both grew up listening to prince. I remember it was about '86 or so, I was around 10 and we were visiting my best friend and his family in St Paul for the weekend. saying my My buddy was a HUGE fan of Prince, is an understatement, he'd wear ruffled shirts, etc at 10yrs old.. :). our moms went out one night and when they come back late that night they said they went to 1st Ave and saw Prince playing. we were in awe... but way too young to have been able to go ourselves. I've followed him through all the changes in his bands, music styles and such, and have always enjoyed his stuff, though some didn't get me as much as others.. I already felt he was probably the most talented musician there was, but after his death, I was amazed at how much we all missed of Prince's craft, up to that point. All the footage that has come out of the woodwork since that terrible day is crazy. wow, .. he truly was a great person.. and that day there was an incredible hole in the music industry. :(

Once I was in a jam packed NYC dance club called Nell's back in the early 90's. From out of nowhere Prince blends into the crowd on the dance floor. He's dancing 2 feet away from me with a bodyguard next to him. I am trying with all my might not to freak out. I make the mistake of staring at him. People slowly start freaking out. He notices the stares he's getting and disappears with his bodyguard into the dark club and in an instant he was gone into the night.

Love Jamie for that interview just right there straight up from the heart. He didn't care. He took his mom and daughter that's wonderful. Saw when Prince honoured Jamie when he did Ray. It was magical to see the happiness in Jamie's face and that goofy smile. Prince brings out the boy and girl in us. That's how rock stars do? I wish they didn't 😢💜

I will never forget the day this musical genius left us. I was heartbroken. My kids who I hadn't heard from in while both called to see if I was ok. I wasn't, I just couldn t believe that the world had lost such a great talent not to mention the coolest dude ever.

Okay, now I'm going to tell you about the time I met Jamie Foxx. Only he wasn't Jamie Foxx yet. He was 15 year old Eric Bishop from Terrell, Texas. I had a great coaching friend in Lubbock in the early '80s. A few years later while I was teaching in Oak Cliff, my pal Dick Ryan was an assistant varsity football coach and freshman basketball coach at Terrell HS, 20 miles down the road from me. I visited Dick several times and watched his teams play. Ryan was the greatest motivator I'd ever been around. His players adored him. One day he said "Get your ass down here this afternoon. You've seen Eric Bishop play ball, but you have to see him perform today. The cat can GO!" I get there and watch the typical talent show at the school's auditorium. It was mildly entertaining. Until Eric Bishop got on stage. He then proceeded to blow everybody away with his flawless Michael Jackson impersonation ("Billy Jean"). The place went absolutely bananas. Every kid in the school was standing on their auditorium seat screaming as if the Beatles were playing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. Dick's young son Trucker was peeing his pants and telling me that Eric could "moonwalk more better than Michael Jackson hisself!" . I shook Eric's gloved hand afterward and told him he should be playing college basketball in the near future :)

I was at that show with Jamie and his daughter. December 18, 2010, Madison Square Garden. I saw Jamie onstage with Whoopi and Sheri Shepard, John Leguizamo, Dr. Cornell West, Alicia Keys... What a night! I got stuck in NYC that night. I took the bus down from Albany and planned to go right back afterwards. Prince played so long and made me miss that last bus. I wasn’t about to leave until they broke down the drums 😂 I walked around NYC with nowhere to go all night...with a grin on my face!! Great show.
