VAR is Even Worse Outside of the Premier League...
In this video, we look at three Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Decisions, made outside the Premier League, that are extremely controversial and terrible. This is a football/soccer commentary/documentary that talks about the worst VAR decisions of all time, such as the longest ever decision made in the Bundesliga and worst ever referee decision made in the Serie A.
VAR may have controversial moments in the Premier League, but it gets way worse in the other leagues such as the Bundesliga and the Serie A. We look at incidents such as the Mainz v Freiburg 2018 Longest Ever VAR Decision that lasted 6 minutes, and the Worst VAR Decision of All Time, the Bonucci offside in Juventus vs Salernitana. This video was extremely fun to make, I hope you enjoy!

Can I just say as a referee football is significantly more subjective than rugby, so being conversations should not be public (during the game at least - after the game I mostly agree). As on interviews after the game, it would be a good idea if done well and respectfully, but could also go very pear shaped very quickly.

That last one is just crazy. I've missed a player before in my refereeing days. Mainly because I was completely on my own, not even any linesmen, as it was my local under 11s B team, and it's a decision I still remember to this day because of how wrong I got it. I cannot even fathom of doing it in Serie A with all that technology available.

Going solely off of the first angle of the last decision, doesn't the player making an attempt on the ball from a *seemingly offside position automatically make him part of the play, meaning had he actually been offside and made the same attempt on the ball, it would have been the right call, contact or not? 1. Yes. I know the defender the officials missed kept him on, therefore it's an egregiously missed call. I understand that, and agree with that. 2. Just for clarification of my question, it's more so a hypothetical at this point, and making sure my understanding of offside isn't antiquated. A player making an attempt on the ball from an offside position still results in an offside decision, regardless of if they touch it or not, right?
@Francis.....
@Francis..... 10 күн бұрын
@@lilroehler You are correct. As soon as there is an attempt to play the ball he is offside and the goal is ruled out. That interpretation is always applied. However, if there is no attempt to play the ball he could be obsrtucting players or vision of defenders which is open to more intepretation.
@lilroehler
@lilroehler 9 күн бұрын
@Francis..... I was also thinking about the obstruction as well. But as he's not obstructing the keeper's vision, had he not made an attempt on the ball, he's really only obstructing a defender who has no chance to make the play defensively himself with his position, I didn't think obstruction could have been a deciding factor. The only part that bothered me about the guys breakdown was when he said something along the lines of "there was no cause of an offside call in the first place." Where he clearly forgot that making an attempt on the ball makes you part of the play, and if you start the play off in an offside position, the play is deemed offside. Again, for anyone else who wants to try and argue, still looking at it from a hypothetical situation where the defender the officials missed was not keeping the guy in an onside position. I agree it's a bad call, and the player in discussion was not, in fact, offside in the actual play we watched.

Worst VAR decision of all time has now gone back to the Premier League, when Diaz scored an onside goal, the goal was given, the referee forgot to give it and carried on, and VAR didn't bother telling him lmao
@kjn3350
@kjn3350 3 ай бұрын
Actually, the referee called a late offside which VAR didn't hear. Assuming the goal was given, they confirmed what they thought was the referee's decision (VAR doesn't use direct communication, which meant that the referees couldn't hear each other). I mean, it's egregious, but it's just a communication error rather than bad refereeing.

I actually agree that Bonucci was interfering with play as both a referee and a goalkeeper. He does not need to touch it for his actions to deceive a goalkeeper in what needs to be an instinctive reactive moment for him to affect a save. Was it going in anyway? Yes, no way he was saving it. But don't jump for the ball. But missing a player like that is something I'm not sure you can come back from. That said, with Juve's history with referees it might have been a little bit of cosmic karma.
@neez6097
@neez6097 5 ай бұрын
The fa rulesbook states that it's offside in the case of "clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent ", which is obviously the case since Bonucci's attempt impact not only the goalkeeper but the defenders as well. The decision was a mistake, but not because of Bonucci not touching the ball. And actually, it's quite hard to put it on the var as well. The image shown is taken from a video made from the stands, that's because there actually wasn't a camera available to VAR showing Salernitana's player (as stated by Italia Referee Association). Of the 15 cameras present at the Stadium only one actually showed Candreva's position, the "tactical camera"(added by the clubs to their stadium for tactical study purposes), but it's recording weren't shared with Var by the whoever was working on cameras at the Allianz Stadium. Basically: it was a pretty big fuck up, but not really made by VAR. Source: sport.sky.it/calcio/serie-a/2022/09/12/juve-salernitana-var-fuorigioco-gol

I know it's technically against the rules, but I find it difficult to go along with rules in situations like these. If Bonucci interfered but didn't change the result of play, can you really disallow the goal? To me, it goes against the spirit of the game. Yes, there might have been a different reaction, but if in any realistic scenario the result does not change, is there really any justification to the rule?

@@Das_me he definitely touched him on the first yellow. In some of the videos you can clearly see how Udogies trips himself because of Jota touching him. And even if that situation itself doesn't necessarily means a yellow (although you cant blame the ref for giving it because of the counter attack his foul disrupted), Jota should've been booked 10-15 mins earlier for a far worse situation. So that yellow card might as well have been for accumulation of fouls.

The last one reminded me of how i once played fifa and tried to cross the ball but the ball never reached the other player, the opposing keeper catched the cross but offside was still given. And another one also in fifa was when i once did a through ball to a player that was offside but that player didn't touch the ball, the opposing player slightly kicked it out off play for a corner but the game still called it offside. That game ended 0-0 and it was in career mode so if I scored from that corner and if I would've gotten relegated by one point or lost the league by one point it would've been the ref's fault

Rugby has TMO and they put the instant replay up for everyone including the referee to see. They are NOT afraid of controversy because they always aim to make the RIGHT decisions. Whereas football referees ran half the pitch to watch a monitor that ONLY the referee can see. If a player goes over to take even a peep, he is punished with a yellow card. Why the secrecy? If everything is above board, why are you afraid to show the data in the open? If you are afraid of fan riots, ban those fans who are hooligans! Football organizations are either incompetent or corrupt. Why else would implementing such a simple technology like VAR be such a failure?

And got a red card. But actually he didn't even touch Antony. Antony just stepped on Hummels' leg and then dived to the ground and acted like he was brutally fouled. After VAR check they didn't take it back. Just type "Hummels red card" and you'll find it. It's a German interview but they analyze it

The last one - its wrong yes. But you say "VAR was checking if he was interfering with play. That is wrong. They are checking if he is interfering with an opponent. You can only be interfering with play if you touch the ball (unless no one else has an opportunity to play that ball) And the laws state that you can be offside by "clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball". Therefore it would correctly be offside. Doesnt matter if it changes the outcome or if he connects with it. That offside call would be subjective. Obviously though he isnt offside given the player the missed. But if he was in an offside position, it would rightly not be given.

in league one, bolton played forest green rovers, and in the buildup Elias Kachunga literally punched someone in the stomach. The ref stopped play and talked to the linesman, and he said that Dion Charles was the one that punched the player and he got a red card

For that third case, the game should run a couple of seasons without the offside rule and this type of gaff would not be a question. Outfield players would have to adapt to cover poaching. Question is only whether poaching or the offside trap is worse for the game.

Change the offside rule to the players GPS transponder being beyond the nearest defenders GPS transponder and that settles the matter much quicker.

Terrible, nightmarishly dystopian idea. Would you like that for yourself or your loved ones. Sometimes I think there must be an ulterior agenda going on as how can so many obvious errors be occurring at this rate. Such as the furtherance of the aforementioned or perhaps something else.

@@J3diMindTrix We have goal line technology, which has worked very well and the players already wear GPS transponders, in case you hadn't already noticed. So it wouldn't take much to use them to get fast and accurate offside decisions, which must be a nightmare for linesmen to get right.
@J3diMindTrix

@@zig_ziggy I get your point but even with the wearing of gps transponders and VAR, incorrect decisions are still being made. I see nothing to justify how much it's ruined the game and the enjoyment it's taken out of people's lives; it was supposed to be for only the most egregious of errors and goal line tech but of course the authority in charge of it has sought to expand its powers, no surprise there. If it's obvious to everyone else in the ground within seconds why does it take the supposed 'professionals' for instance say around 5 minutes for them to conclude that, WITH the equipment at their disposal.. it's almost like something else is going on, something untoward, even suspect potentially ? Also football is something that is popular across the whole of society with staggeringly huge viewership and engagement so if there was anywhere for the deep state to trial yet another Orwellian surveillance technique it would be there. Kid : 'my hero (player x) has got a transponder! can I have one too?' Dad : ' course you can dear'. Would you want that?

Bonucci is cleary active in that situation. He doesn't need to touch the ball to be active. He is active, because he goes activaly to the ball, which confronts the goalkeeper not doing his save properly, because the GK has to rethink if Bonucci can chance the direction or not. Bonucci even had a challenge with the defender, which makes him active, because the ball goes directly to the challenge. For that two active points against GK and defender Bonucci would make it as an active offside situation... but yeah... the defender which is not shown by the VAR makes them all onside XD

Hilarious that I get this video in my feed now, when the PL has succeeded in beating the worst decision ever. The Liverpool goal being disallowed against Tottenham (who this guy appears to support) is now easily the worst decision ever. The 5 minutes VAR took to award Crystal Palace a PK against…yes…Liverpool also has to be considered the longest VAR decision because it was 5 minutes of play!

I think the biggest problem for VAR, especially in Premier League, is the inconsistency of their standards of what should be penalized or not. Exactly the same circumstance can have two completely different VAR decision in different matches, or even during the same match. You can be shit refereeing for every matches, then every teams suffer. But it is the worst when you are having double standards, making this completely unfair for those teams who was penalized from the decision while some teams were in favor of the referee's decisions for the exact same context.

If Bonucci was offside, they’d have been right to disallow it because making a movement towards the ball or attempting to play it counts as interfering

Honestly, Bonucci did interfeer with the play. The keeper is waiting on him to connect with the ball and when he doesnt its to late to make the save.

6 minutes is WAY too long for var, even to look at all angles, and it’s a CLEAR handball, why more angles when it’s CLEAR, other angles will not change the space and time for it to magically become the head or the foot

If you make an attempt to play the ball you ARE interfering with play, even if you miss the ball, but, not seeing the player playing him onside is a disgrace. Not as bad as the Liverpool’s Diaz offside decision against Tottenham though, my God that was the hight of incompetence.
