VW USA made a R-GTI Concept in 2006 // Fully custom body kit + Carbon Fiber all the things!

Back in 2006, Volkswagen's new facility in California, along with other departments at the company, built and released this wild Golf GTI Concept at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
With lots of custom and bespoke pieces dotted around the car, there's much more to find on it than just the big front bumper. And that flat black finish? That was a later change, after the car had been driven by the press and others on the roads and tracks across the USA.
After that, the car was thankfully kept alive and saved, albeit tucked away, gathering the dust that you see on it today (and more - it rained while I was transporting it!).

Amazing interior. My favourite part though, the wheels. I would get someone to 3D scan the rear bumper to have a digital back up of it. It would be a shame if that was damaged and couldn't be reproduced because of a lack of record.

Awesome. I was lucky to see that back in 2006. Also brings back good memories of the crazy three months when i was part of the team building the 2005 VW SEMA cars when i work at HPA. Definitely was a special time back then in the VW scene.

If someone sold a roll cage setup like that and those seat mounts I'd buy them. Love that the bumper is Aluminum, a body kit company should make a line of aluminum bumpers.

As a german and former MK5 Golf owner this is what I very much envy you for: The thunderbunny and TDI Cup bumpers look so cool and its such a shame they were never sold at a bigger scale ...

Hi Jamie,Im such a big Mk5 fan,keep the tint on pls,its makes the car look menacing,nice to see one of South Africa's specials in the background up on the lift,tge blue 'Citi' mk1 golf originating from the Johannesburg area as the number plate indicates.

Agreed! Someone else made the very commonsense suggestion that the car has two back wheels on one side, and two front wheels on the other side, which I had absolutely not thought of, but it sounds like a very reasonable explanation. As well as your perfect suggestions, the big thing is maintenance, it needs a full service to be safe and back on the road :-)

I agree about the beautiful interior being shown off! Might I suggest doing a clear film, like LLUMAR’s Air80 instead? It’s an almost clear ceramic film that will help protect the interior from harmful UV and has great heat rejection, considering there’s no charcoal color to it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the front wheels, it’s pretty common for the time as there’s some mechanical wiggle room for each car when it comes off the assembly line. My Mk5 has something similar, drives mint! No issues. As long as the car isn’t pulling to one side, you should be fine. Hope this helps

It’s probably not the case but are you sure the reason the drivers front wheel is stuck out more than the other isn’t because that wheel is supposed to be a rear wheel and one on the rear is supposed to be on the front because I’d assume having custom wheels its likely that it’s got different offsets front and rear I mean I’m sure that’s not the case but anyway looks like it’s going to be a cool project

I remember pissing my friends off for adding an extra 2 hours to SF to LA road trip to drive by that place. I don't recall the year, 92/93 maybe, there was an abundance of MK3's Golf's in the parking lot. First time laying my eyes on them outside of a magazine. I don't remember the exact location of the facility, could have been different from what was discussed here, but it was north of Los Angeles which is where Oxnard is.

Vw is love everyone and their availability of the old models in good conditions have a strong second hand market, sadly the price hasn't dropped as much as we've wanted them to be. Even a shit box like mk2 are still a bit expensive on South Africa.

Honestly the colour on the brakes i'm not a fan of but honestly I'd argue those wheels haven't aged well at all, not a fan tbh way too obscure. Should have just gone multi spoke bbs wheels, would have tied it together better.
