In my opinion, they used the rope to hang someone to death because the rope was already in the shape of a lasso. I think they first entered the grave, then they hanged and killed someone, and lastly, just when they were going to bury the deceased Wooly objected, but Amanda can't kill him because Amanda's only friend is Wooly.
