The Jazz Chorus 22 is one of the smallest of the recent launch of the Jazz Chorus series. It is a small solid state amp designed for home or studio, but it is loud enough that you could use it in a small club setting. This is my review and sound demo.

called the jc-22 for two reasons. jc-30 sounds too much like ac-30, so they used the rms power value; 30/√2 rounds up to 22W

Billy Duffy from The Cult has been using the Jazz Chorus for his clean tones for ages. Once you explained the Dimensional Chorus effect I immediately recognised this as the Billy Duffy tone that I've loved for decades. Cheers for a great in depth review. These amps really are the benchmark for solid state cleans.

Very true! I was also amazed to learn that Hetfield and Hammett (Metallica) used to use the JC120 for their clean tone and sometimes dirty tone (pedals through it) on stage and in the recording studio.

This Roland or the Boss Katana though Tim? That sounds pretty good for cleans too from the demos I've heard. I know that this has the stereo feature but I'm not sure about those 6 inch speakers. I am slightly tempted to get 1 or the other because I have my Laney valve amp but it'd be nice to get something different too for when the mood takes me.

My first amp in 1978 was the JC-120. It became a 40 year companion- amazing sound -very heavy amp I would lug it up/down 3rd floor stairway when going to rehearsals, gigs. Due to chronic illness I had to sell it a few years ago - but am looking at getting the JC-22 whenever I get better- Thx for the video! Cheers from Germany 🇩🇪

Put a little compression on the Strat and you´ve got The Police, Bryan Adams, Chris Isaak, Pink Floyd and just about every other major pop and pop- rock hit of the 80s with a clean guitar in it. That little thing is a beast ! Amazing tone. Especially for clean parts in metal,- it would be miles ahead of everything else in that genre when it comes to clean tone. I need one. Now !

I've had this amp for about 10 months. I use it now as my main practice and small gig amp. When I first plugged into it, I just used the standard setting and thought nothing more about exploring it. The clean sound is awesome, and the EQ settings can be tweaked to anyone's style. I play mostly jazz/pop/soul blend of music. I play an Ibanez George Benson, Fender Strat (w/ Noiseless pups), a Gibson ES-275, and other hollowbodies. I really love this amp, and now love it even more since I discovered I can get the full stereo feel if I turn the chorus depth setting on only slightly, as well as the Speed, maybe to 1. Yes, the bass is reduced, but this can easily be compensated by just adding more bass. The results are amazing. The sound is really big for such a small amp. Don't let the size fool you, it's good enough for a gig at a small venue. I add a Boss delay pedal for extra effects. This one's a keeper! :)

@@crazywisdom2 I think for my use, this amp has been fantastic. I wrote this comment a year ago and this JC22 is still my go to amp. The JC22 is a 30 watt amp, despite the 22 in the name. It's also light and easy to move around (I have mine on a small dolly). I think for larger venues the 40 would be a good idea.

I appreciate you playing examples with the room mic only. I know everyone wants to hear close mic examples because the sound quality is better, but you can’t get an accurate idea of what an amp sounds like in person if it’s close miked. A lot of small amps sound really boxy and terrible in person, but sound big and full if close miked, so I like demos that do both.

It's called the JC-22 because Roland already made an amp called the JC-20 in the early 90's. Like the 22 it was a cut-down JC120, but it was cut down in different ways; The chorus was simply toggled on or off with no control over its settings, it lacked reverb, and it came with 5 inch speakers instead of 6.5 inch. Though it has the JC120 distortion in place of reverb, so take that as you will.
@zazz63
@zazz63 5 жыл бұрын
You didn’t watch the video properly ...he was asking why it wasn’t called the Jc-30? Since it is a 30w model and all the previous Jc models have got their name from the wattage.

how loud does the JC-22 get? I play in an organ trio that plays jazz music with a drummer and organ player playing a B3 through a Leslie. I need a small amp I can carry around. Super little amp. I went into my local looking for a compact amp for home, aiming for something a bit different to my Cube 20. I fully expected to walk out with a Fender GT40 or some sort of modelling amp like that. Shop guy was smart, set me up to play this one first. Crystal clear cleans, nice reverb and the dimensional chorus is pretty special. I also tried what I intended looking at and walked out with the JC-22. For me the tone and simplicity won over software and gizmos. Try one sometime.

One trick perhaps. When you use the SM57 to record both HPs, the best way to send the sound is to make sure you pan pot mikes on Right and left side of your stereo sound being sent. If the listener is using a headset, it might not change anything. But is the user uses monitors, then he/she will benefit of the same Dimensional effect.

Thank you. What about the headphones quality? How is that with pedals?

I have an extremely dumb question, but I don't know and would love an answer. I'm an acoustic player and have been for nearly 30 years. I have a few electrics and getting more and more into them. I've never ventured into pedals and I want to. So, I have an 80's Peavey Studio Pro 40 that I love dearly. It just works for me in application and playing at room/house volume. There is NOT a send/return for pedals. Does that mean pedals cannot be used on it? Will it work to just plug the pedal into the amp and my guitar into the pedal? I assume this would work, but then what is the purpose of the send/return? Does an have to be structured for pedals specifically? Anyway, before I start picking up a looper, compression, crunch etc. pedals, I thought I would try to find this info out. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Hi Ronnie. As you saw in this video I ran my guitar into a pedal (the Boss Tera Echo) and then into the front of the amp. You can do the same with your amp. The reason amps have a send/return on them for effects is because when you run a modulation pedal (chorus, reverb, delay, flanger, phaser, etc) in the front of the amp, it then runs along with your guitar signal through the pre-amp. What happens then is that the one signal is amplified and depending on the pedal, it can become difficult to get the guitar and pedal sound in a pleasing way, especially at louder volume. The effects loop on an amp (send/return) just adds your modulation signal to the guitar, but at a later stage so it is not effected as much with the coloring of the pre-amp and just receives the post amp along with the EQ'd guitar signal. If you play clean, then the differences in running a pedal in the front or in the effects loop are a little less noticeable. If you have an amp with tube distortion or built in distortion, it then sounds really bad if you run modulated effects in the front of the amp.... these need to go through the effects loop. The general rule is if you have an effects loop on your amp, you would always use it for Delay, Reverb, Flanger, Chorus and Phaser pedals. Pedals such as Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz should never be put through an effects loop, but rather run in the front of the amp. Please also note that lots of musicians just place their amp on a 100% clean channel and then run every effect through the front of the amp, but they place their effects on their pedal board in a way that works like an amp with an effects loop. In other words, the pedal board would start with a Compressor, then a Distortion or Overdrive, then a Chorus or Flanger, then a Delay and then into the amp. For most amps this works nicely.

I heard that the effects loop goes thru the chorus….no way to stop that. is this correct?

Just Yesterday i played IT in musicstore with a Fender Jaguar, i played some the smiths, Johnny Marr and Morrissey stuff and was just in heaven. The only reason i haven't grabbed IT IS that i'm thinking about If the jc 40 is even the better choice.

Finally, a decently mic'd video with someone who actually knows how to play. That is "the" sound. Metallica, The Police, Rush, etc.

Wow this was a great instructional review. I wished you played "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" with that Chorus and Reverb. Is there a difference in tone from your experience between the 120, the 40 and this besides the wattage?

Great video! Martha & the Muffins and Crowded House! Nice! You said in your review that you could gig with it. Is it actually loud enough? It's only 30 watts. I can't get the JC-40, I have a bad back injury and the 35 lb JC-40 would be too heavy to lift. Even the 26 lb JC-22 might be a bit tricky. I love the sound and will be playing '80s new wave/post-punk/goth kind of stuff (nothing too heavy), so it's the perfect sound. It would be amazing if it was loud enough to play live with a drummer. What do you think? Thanks very much!

Thanks! It is not loud enough to play with a drummer in a way that every note would be spectacular, unless the drummer is playing very light as in a nice Burbon Club Jazz Bar where you can hear yourself talk over the music.
