What an astonishing find to experience on a routine visit to KZfaq. For starters, Jan Garbarek and his group on 'I took up the runes' tour do not disappoint with their inventiveness and wistful but joyous vivacity. But then to be suddenly graced with the appearance of Agnes Buen Garnas. Her recorded output suddenly jumps from just Rosensfole to two items in a blink of an eye! Is there a limit to the descriptive power of her voice? Its purity and intensity cut through so much of contemporary pop productions like knife through butter. All hail Jan Garbarek for promoting Norwegian folk culture in the person of this extraordinary performer!

This great concert brings back amazing memories from one of my finest concert experiences - the musicians on this stage + MARI BOINE on the same stage in a small church (Ski nye kirke) outside Oslo 1991/92. The band tied the music together in such a way that nobody could clap during the concert. Thank you for an unforgettable musical trip!

They performed in a number of churches in southern Norway around 1990? I remember one of them so well - except which one it was - Mari Boine appearing as if from another planet in a little church near Oslo, yes (not as early as 1987 mentioned here though: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gZiihbNiqrjGf3U.html)

Knowing I took up the runes from childhood it´s a blast to see them performing it only one year after it´s release. This is very precious stuff. Thanks for sharing!

I don't think this is really jazz, though. Too many appropriate notes.

@@politicallycorrectredskin796 you don't seem to understand the history of jazz. Its early days, like Gershwin, sounds today like a lot of normal music. This music is definitely jazz. You are just a young myopic auditory critic.

@@vutEwa Nice name-calling and projection. You just lost the argument, btw. That's how logical fallacies word and why you shouldn't use them.

Amazing percussion solo from Marilyn Mazur. Much as I love the albums they lack the raw energy of the live performances.

Films or photographs of musicians performing at different points in their careers constitute one of the most fascinating "time capsule" effects available. For instance, I'm watching this video of Jan Garbarek performing in 1991, and just to the right of the video is a "preview" screen shot of a video of Jan from the MaiJazz Festival in 2013. In the 2013 screen shot Jan is blowing into the same type instrument, holding exactly the same position, with the same facial expression, as in much of the 1991 video - basically, looking exactly the same (even his hairstyle is identical) as the 1991 version; except here, instead of black with a single streak of gray, his hair is almost entirely gray. It's like a real-life version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray". Musicians are probably among the very few humans who are photographed over the course of many years, doing the same thing, in the same physical position, providing such a parallel. ...Sorry; I know that's trivial, but I find it fascinating...

he's also wearing same watch, same pants.. And underwear! not a single personal evolution over more than 20 years.. Just like his music "fascinating...! " ;)

And what about the musical side? I am sure the interpretation of the same tune differs a lot... I'd like to compare these performances when I have a moment...

Great comment. It isn't trivial, it's human. The same note is the same note, but Jan Garbarek is different, so are we.
