@@FactsVerse Well, not as hip as SNL, but I’d love insights on long gone host shows like Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, and other things that influenced culture in the 60s and 70s. As a kid growing up in that period I occasionally saw these around adults in my family, but I was generally too young to catch clever whit, scandalous guests, and when new thought was introduced and how it was received.

If one were to use working hours on TV, Jane Curtain may be number one in comparison to the rest of her alumni from SNL. There was the woman's show Kate and Alley, a show about 2 single divorced women to the zany Third Rock from the Sun without skipping a beat. I agree, very underrated.

IMHO, Bill Murray’s (and even Curtain’s) entertainment chops far exceeds Chase’s! I vividly recall Belushi’s cemetery scene as an old man claiming that he had outlived the rest of the SNL cast because he was a dancer made me wish that he would. As a good friend of mine states, “Addiction is giving up everything else for one thing; whereas recovery is giving up one thing for everything else!” May some find enough strength and wisdom in this saw to break the cycle of addiction.

I was born in '67, just a little too young for the first few years of SNL. I found it in '78, but I used to watch all the summer reruns too because they were mostly from past seasons. So, I did see quite a bit of the 'first five.' To this day, Belushi's death still makes me sad. He was so talented, one of the few that could make physical comedy _smart,_ instead of just overblown pratfalls and stumbling around.

Hats off to Lorne Michaels and Jane Curtain for helping create one of the most enduring shows in TV history. Both utilized their tremendous talents to produce an entetainment legacy that has stood unrivaled for a half century. As to Curtain asking Michaels to confront Belushi's addiction; You cannot help an addict unless they want help. Also this would have been challenging for Michaels to address Belushi's drug use beacuse so many of the cast and guests were on drugs at the time, that you would have had to literally fire half the cast and writers plus bar a large percentage of the guests in order to earnestly deal with the issue. From personal experience I can tell you that all addicts are selfish and destructive, and if you cannot establish and maintain a very firm boundary early on , the addict will ultimately manipulate you and inflict great harm on your life. In the end, you will be both angry with the addict as well as yourself for being so foolish. Hats off again to Jane Curtain for steering clear of Belushi and the destructive trappings of fame. Her body of work is a testimony to both her talent and wise personal choices.

Well said, you obviously have quite a few functional brain cells left. My ex wife is an addict and used meth, cocaine and alcohol while pregnant with my son. I had never been involved with an addict before so I got an education. It was a surprise when I discovered what she had been doing when she was in labor and admitted to her drug use. It went from a wonderful experience to being in fear that my son was going to be harmed. He’s 26 years old now and has some issues. My ex never had to spend a day behind bars even though she forged court ordered urine tests in addition to harming our son. I had to fight for 50-50 custody. If it had been me who used drugs I probably wouldn’t have seen my kids. She’s 60 years old now and still drinks. My current girlfriend doesn’t drink at all and is happy that I don’t drink because her ex husband did quite a bit of drinking.

Deeply sorry about your wife's addiction. However; It is great to hear that you found a sober person to share your life with! I too have sadly had many legal wranglings with addicts in my life (family. tenants and an ex). For me the saddest part is not when they lie, but when you can see that they actually believe their own lies. It is very easy in the moment to let yourself get angry and use their destructive behavior to justify your own counterproductive reponse. My best advice is to forgive them, avoid legal action if you can and get on with your life by maintaining a firm boundary and releasing them to God in prayer (fixing people is His job,,,not yours) @@patfromamboy

There were definite diamonds in the rough, but some of the newer SNL shows have been consistently good throughout. Don't get me wrong, I love those first years, but to make it seem like it smelled of roses is delusional. It was classic improv-style stuff. A lot of it failed miserably. Way worse than you see on the show today... but the entire show was about taking risks... and they had some of the funniest stuff on television by far at that time.

I was a teen when SNL started, and I can say "I saw the first episode of the first show, on its first night airing". I ADORED Gilda Radner, she was my absolute favorite. I miss her very much too. I like everybody on the show really, except Belushi. He just wasn't funny to me at all.....although he did have some good characters, and played them well.........he was just not funny. Even not having instant access to hot gossip back then...........the stories about what went on behind the scenes were immediately spread across the land. Most of what went on behind the scenes was from the instant success of literally becoming overnight TV stars and world wide adored comedians. Success has a way of turning people into some pretty awful people. But, after season 5......it stopped being SNL, and was just "there". Nothing and nobody will EVER compare to the originals. Not then, not today, and not anywhere in the future.

I can’t believe that Jane doesn’t find the old show funny! It was often hilarious, including her bits, though it was uneven. But that’s live TV for you.

A behind-the-scenes fight between Bill Murray & former cast member Chevy Chase, and Jane Curtain was there to witness it… Oh yeah? So what? We’ve all known about it since it went down in February of 1978!

still ike snl, but that original crew was something else!!! they were brewed out of the 60's, and places like the hasty pudding at harvard, and 2nd city......national lampoon was a huge influence...theres nothing like that today- it was a particular humor of the time.

I remember asking this as a kid, Why do people think SNL is funny? A little funny now and then? Sure, but that could be said of nearly every show; for the most part, it just seemed to me dumb, to the point of tedious. Then comes along Jane Curtin to say I was not the only one. It took 50 years, but it was worth the wait.

The Murray/Chase fight was common knowledge. You can see during the "goodnights" (while the credits role) how pissed off Bill Murray is after that episode.

Not sure how accurate you are on the Murray/Chase relationship getting better on the set of Caddyshack. I recall a pretty big fight where Chase claimed Murray almost ran him down with that huge landscaping thing they drove with all the blades. Anyway, Jane Curtain was definitely an unsung Not Ready for Prime Time Player. I loved her work on SNL.

What did she expect Lorne to do? And once he tried to do anything he wanted to be on the hook for that? Dan was the right person to get involved ... she should laud him instead of criticizing Lorne.

never knew belushi, but could tell he was always coked out, he always had the look, 'i'm here, but not really.' agree with curtin, the show has always been shit, a hit and miss skit show, mostly miss, proof a weekly live show with a host really isn't great material, but they were young hipsters and "dangerous". most of us who watched were stoned, laughs were rare, it was just something we watched as friends.
