I like the details in the book, like when Rochester asks Blanche to explain all the detractions Jane exhibits of her class and when he expresses displeasure at Blanche's snobbery when Jane comes to ask for a leave during a card game. But I think Jane is less lovestruck and self-effacing, which is different from the movie, and, in a way, less romantic. I also disliked that Jane wished to keep working for him as a governess and never take a penny from his purse even after marriage because I guess she's so thoroughly modem. Seriously, WTH? And Rochester seemed almost silly and ridiculous. I imagined him sort of like an unattractive middle aged burly man who drones on about things with mind numbing detail and digressions. I think the movie is actually better because Dalton is dashing and makes the love story more enjoyable, at least for me. I'd also have preferred Jane to have been a little less mousy, about Joan Fontaine level plain, but Clark's acting makes up for it completely. I suppose it depends on what the reader wants: feminism or romance. If you want the evolution of the independent female archetype through the Georgian and Victorian eras, then you want to read the novel as part of a catalog.

To me, he realized that calling Jane "little" or making fun of her height would led him into trouble and it might cause Jane to leave him permanently. He quickly changed the topic and wiggled his hand to prevent Jane from being upset. Thankfully, Jane forgives him from that small mistake because she's in love with him. It was funny scene :D

Talk about a man in love. He doesn't want her to leave because she'll be gone, for what would probably feel like an eternity, and he'd be stuck with guests he wants to make her jealous with.

@ditsashihurkar4913
@ditsashihurkar4913 3 жыл бұрын
@Nenethegreat W well then you didn't understand that Rochester was doing all these things to make Jane jealous, it was his plan, because somewhere he knew that Jane would not speak up her feelings which she has for him by herself. Even in this particular scene when he repeatedly says is that all?? So, you will do no more than say farewell Jane? He is giving her a chance to speak up, but she clearly refuses and says it is enough sir, that " enough sir " hurts him. Even in post mason conversation when he looks at Jane and says " but I have found the being jane ", he ardently looks at her like a lover, trying to say look at me, look into my eyes, can't you see Jane there is so much love in my eyes for you, only you, but again Zelah's jane is clueless about his real emotions for her, and that's why he laughs at her and himself and then brings the subject of honourable Blanche Ingram.

@@marlenadm5654 another amazing moment! This series is so well made. They both understood the characters so well. I love how Zelah shows Jane’s emotions in the way she delivers the sentences, like in the case you mentioned. The way she says it and her expression, it’s so good. Same for Dalton as Rochester. Rochester is supposed to be brooding and sardonic (to everyone, as a mask he wears because he feels so broken) BUT he shows his true personality with Jane, which in reality he is a funny, intelligent and caring man. The joke about her waiting for her people in hay lane, this whole “on this mercenary ground, will you let me hector you a little?” are playful ways to get to know her better. To see show she responds to him and how compatible they actually are. And she gets to know him better in response. I love this series. I could talk about it and about the book for days. There are only few changes from what’s in the book and most of the dialogue is there.

I've watched every version of this classic book on screen....there is no equal to our Zelah-Timothy incarnation of heroes.I think Bronte would have been enchanted , too. Only "North and South" 2004 and "Pride and Prejudice" 1995 have reached this level of mastership and fidelity to the spirit of the books they originated. Truly a delight for the viewer and an honour to their written stories.

This is true, but then pretty much all of the film/TV Rochesters have been handsome, and most of the film/TV Janes have been far from plain. That said, Charlotte Brontë does a neat little trick in her book: she keeps calling Rochester various forms of ugly, but when she describes him (when Jane draws his portrait while visiting her dying aunt), she describes a pretty attractive man. Clever Charlotte. Having her cake and eating it too...

@@cellowali2865 -- Haha nothing to forgive! In the end we all have our own taste. In fact, I also DON'T find William Hurt or Ciarán HInds attractive, but they are generally considered handsome. I'd forgotten about George C. Scott, who (again I agree) no one would call handsome, but him I find VERY attractive. There's a difference, isn't there? And in fact, as I've posted elsewhere, Charlotte Brontë was very clever, because she keeps having Jane saying that Rochester is ugly, but when she describes him in detail (when Jane is back with her aunt and draws a portrait of him), she indeed describes a very attractive man! :)

Mr. Rochester's behavior (in the book, and faithfully rendered in this series) reflects a terribly conflicted man. He has fallen in love with Jane, but his so-called attempts to make her jealous are reckless and likely to alienate her, and considering his secret I think he's also trying to alienate her.

I think this is the best version of Jane Eyre, however not a single version gets their banter right. The book is actually hilarious in some parts (like when Jane accidentally sits beside Mr R in the garden, thinks he hasn’t noticed her, waits there in silence for something like half an hour until his back his turned then dramatically tip toes away only for him to call her to look at a bug obviously knowing that she was there the entire time). They’re meant to have such chemistry because behind all that formality that was drilled into them they both have about one brain cell each. I think the BBC version came close, but nope! They are cute here, but if you only watched it you’d miss out on them annoying each other and all the rest of the bant.

I find it hard to pick a "favourite" version or a favourite Rochester. Dalton is very passionate, sometimes abrupt (like book Rochester) and this version is very faithful to the book. The 2006 imo captures the dynamic of Jane and Rochester best and Toby Stephens is also fantastic, belligerent, yet charming. I also find that 2006 captured the period best, you had a real sense of the Victorian/Gothic vibe of the novel. The 2011 is way too short in my opinion (you just can't squeeze JE into a film, sorry) but even that Rochester is fascinating. Fassbender plays him more tortured/creepy which is not wrong, just another shade of the original. Idk I just love them all and still be happy to get a new version whenever they made one..

Not only his acting is wonderful but his real gorgeousness comes out very well in this particular scene which makes me think that did the makers purposefully gave him different hairstyle for each episode to make him look ugly because in this particular clip he looks nothing like novel 's ugly Rochester.

@amydegan
@amydegan 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, handsome for our time! But actually not the ideal looks back in 1847 Englan which would have been more like St John Rivers. More than once he mentions his broad shoulder. The perfect guy back then would have been more affemanant with a grecian profile.

I know. Ridiculous how he is described and self-describes as not handsome here. But he's not completely pretty boy handsome like Brad Pitt or Pierce Brosnan. And I prefer it this way. Makes the love story on the screen more enjoyable.

I never understood why they always carried their purses around (even if just inside the house), or in Rochester's case had a huge amount of money in his pockets; and it's not just in the movie, it was mentioned in the book as well ;-P. Nevertheless, it's one of my favourite scenes, the way they tease each other is just so cute.

In many cultures, people would wear all their gold coins around their neck. I believe it to be the case, if one would be robbed then least likely to be frisked or so back then it was unlikely.
